The MC- 8 will always be one of my favorites to drive. I loved to feel and hear that HT740 shift up and then shift down as you come to a stop. That 8v71 still give me chills.

How many of these were built with a manual transmission and how many were built with the automatic box? Greyhound bought some as their first automatics.
The MC-7 was the last purchase of manual transmission coaches Greyhound bought. From the MC-8 on up it was an automatic. HT-740D. The Detroit Diesel 8V71 was dropped after the last MC-8's. With the MC-9 it was the 6V92TA.
Don't know the breakdown of auto to 4-speed, as stated Greyhound only bought the auto beginning with the MC-8 but it was a fairly expensive option at around four to five thousand dollars so many private carriers stayed with the manual also because this is what they were used to and some did not trust the automatic. The MC-8 was the real breakthrough bus for MCI seeing multiple orders from private companies where previously these companies had gone mostly to GM. Greyhound bought so many MC-8s that they opened another plant in Roswell, NM to help keep up with demand from the Dog and all the private sales. A hell of a bus it was!

To stop the hard down shift or to stop it from shifting up and down like that, you would take off with the gear selector in 3, and not shift up to Drive until going over 45 - 50 mph. Also, down shifting the transmission back to 3 yourself as you slow down would help for smooth shifts.

There is only one sound better than an 8v71 linked to a HT740 transmixer, and that's 8v71 linked to a four speed Spicer manual.
