PLEASE HELP ! My 15 year old tiny dog was given metronidazole despite a float stool test being negative. . Can I just stop it after 3 days or will that make matters worse ? I’ve had 2 different vets give it to me for loose stool with a bit of blood . First time , I stopped after 3 days . She went 5 days without it and the second vet gave it to her at a slightly lower dose . We don’t have all natural vets where I live .
Hello, I’m so sorry to hear about your dog. Unfortunately, we can’t advise on whether or ot to stop this medication. However, we highly recommend including a functional pre and probiotic after this drug is given. Metronidazole virtually wipes out all bacteria both the good and the bad. If there is no beneficial bacteria (i.e pre and probiotics) the gut is vunerable to reinfection from bad bacteria thus leading to diarrhea or other issues. We highly recommend using Fido’s Flora - The world’s 1st canine-specific probiotic for dogs. pawdega.us/products/fidos-flora There after, if your dog is having loose stools, you may be interest in our natural diahrrea support bundle pawdega.us/products/diarrhea-support If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us: pawdega.us/pages/contact
My old Vet Pennfield Animal Hospital accidentally overprescribed metronidazole an antibiotic to my dog Cooper for 30 days. I asked him any side effects, he said no. 21 days later he couldn't walk, first vet at VCA emergency hospital in Kalamazoo told me he a back sprain. Two days later Cooper was having seizures, drooling, eye twitching and couldn't stand, I took him back to emergency hospital, second vet said he was a brain issue. I asked both emergency vets could it be toxic, they said no. I had him euthanized. Three days later my local vet called and said he overprescribed metronidazole and for too long, he said Coopers symptoms were caused by the drug reaction, he didn’t have a back sprain or brain issue. The metronidazole could have been stopped and he probably would have been okay. I've been crying for 3 weeks. I don't trust vets anymore. My best friend is gone.
Wow! I am so so sorry to hear this! Thank you so much for sharing your story which helps raise awareness about this. This is so horrifying and I am so sorry you and Cooper had to go through this!
I'm so sorry to hear! I highly recommend speaking to a holistic veterinarian regarding this. If you have already started with the Metronidazole, it's important to proactively support gut health in order to help prevent side effects. We recommend Fido's Flora Pre & Probiotics. pawdega.us/products/fidos-flora
