Great video. Very clear and helpful. One question though: you taper all the planks first, having calculated the required width at each bulkhead. Yet, later, you taper individual planks again, even though they should already have the correct width. Why is that necessary? And why does that not result in gaps, since the twice-tapered plank is now narrower than it should be? What am I missing?
You nailed your planks instead of using glue. I think it's geat, very authentique. Although I was hoping you showed us how you caulked the boat. That would have been awsome. ; )
Hi Eddy! Thank you =) I will apply a second layer of planks on this boat. Since it will be an RC boat I will probably be using resin to make the hull waterproof
Interesting question. Short answer for most kits yes. Then you have easier or harder kits. Easier kits usually have super easy planking or the hull is already built
Hi @pwsod! Thanks for the suggestion, i was already thinking of making a complete guide of tools needed. I already published a video on the top 6 electric tools any modeller should have, you can find it here: th-cam.com/video/S48aNtaZdko/w-d-xo.html

I appreciate your channel so much! I am learning a lot, am about to build a Sterling 40" planked powerboat. Your work is really beautiful; being able to watch you work is worth about a thousand books. No detail is too small, since these problems loom when we build and seeing how a pro foxes the glitch is very informative. May I ask what type of filler or putty or Bondo you are using? I am already going to use the Tightbond...
Hi! Thanks for your comment I really appreciate it :) For this model, after applying a second layer of planking I will be using a special resin for Ships’s hulls as this will be an RC boat. The resin will fill the small gaps between planks (if any) and seal the hull. Gaps have to be really small though, using fillers or putties or bondos to fill gaps is not best practice especially for RC wooden boats. If your boat is just for display and you want to keep the natural look of wood then you can think of using shellac (still no gaps between planks) :)
Thanks! That’s very kind of you :) yes it’s the same principle! Of course it depends on the model: a model with curvy lines might require a bit more attention
Generally yes, but the plank will require bends and twists to prevent buckling. The best jig is your hull. Soak the plank and clamp into position, let it set, it's now a perfect fit.
@@Tagliamare The planks on the clipper are extremely tight on the bow, a lot different than this ships hull. It's ok I'll find my answer elsewhere. thanks for the reply.

How do you work out the taper of the planks ? My dad has left me two of these wooden ships as well as all the material. He's to old to finish them so gave the whole lot to me. He assembled the basic hull structure , but no planking yet.
Hi! You can see how i taper the planks at 02:30 and how i work the stealer plank at 10:05. Planking is not an easy job, but you can manage! Just don't rush, good luck =)

Finishing the ship is my favorite part of the job)))
Amazing work!
Thank you for making these videos!
Thank you!!
Extremely satisfying!
Nice idea on the aluminum channel as a jog for the tapering. Will put that idea to good use.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you very much for your professionalism and your ability to accurately introduce the required materials and sizes as well as work methods

Simply some planks might need to be tapered in a specific way or you need just 2 of that shape. No need to bulk

I use double sided tap for planking manly Saturn and bow no nails or clips whear it bends it works for me try it
A good video
you make it look easy......thanks for the video
Was considering getting into ship building, do you have to do all this, even for beginner kits?

شكرا على هذا الدرس المفيد Thanks.
Can this be motorized, transitioned into a Remote control vessel? Would love a tutorial if so,im currently trying to build an RC craft
This is exactly what I do :) check out the Fifie playlist

Brilliant planking best I've seen does the same principal apply with kit ships how you've planked ?

Can you show how to plank a pointed bow hull like on a Baltimore Clipper?
The technique should be pretty much the same the one I show in the video =)

Where can one get the metal channel tool that you use to hold several of the planks in place while you sand them together?
Hi @Booterman, it’s a U shaped aluminium profile. I bought it in a hardware store

Don’t be afraid of making mistakes and take your time :)
First rule of planking. No plank must ever finish at a point!
haven't seen anything lately on the fifie, are you still working on it?
Hi Donald, bit busy at work lately.
I’m working on the second layer of planking at the moment. Hope to release a new video soon :)

I just found your video on TH-cam. I will be starting a build log on the Model Ship World forum soon, as I build my Amati Fifie.
@@donaldsmith1217 that’s great! Are you going to scratch build too?
@@Tagliamare no, I have the Amati kit
What is optimal thickness of planks?
It depends
@@Tagliamare I’ll go with 2x6mm
If you make two layers and your planking is good than you should be fine
