Comment for those questioning if stepping in place like this breaks WalkScape Rules: Stepping in place is permitted and encouraged both in the community and under Walkscape rules. It is practiced by many top players, and the community as a whole (including some of the game devs). Studies have shown that you reap many of the health benefits of conventional walking while stepping in place. The rule for your review: Walkscape Rule #1 "In WalkScape, steps are generated by walking with your legs. We strongly oppose any non-walking methods of generating steps and discourage promoting them in our community (Reddit, Portal, Discord). The only exceptions are situations, where the leg is naturally moving in ways that count as steps (such as cycling) and only as long as the step rate is low enough to not be abusable." While you may not like stepping or cycling as forms as getting steps the devs have openly said they do not want to discourage these forms of exercise if they do not give excessive amounts of steps over conventional walking. The rule of thumb from the devs is is "If your moving your legs" it's ok.
My walking pad broke last week and I started walking in place instead while waiting for a refund. I remembered you video and now after rewatching I come to the same realizations as you in the video. I get way more steps in, I barely sweat and barely even get out of breath. At the same time I'm wondering about the health factor due to lack of sweat and faster breathing. You imply stepping in place for a longer period of time makes up for the effort of actual walking but have you really felt that or researched it? I'm just wondering if I should buy a new pad or not. I'll appreciate any input you have on that topic.
Walking I would say gives better workout per minute then stepping in place in most situations. However, if you step fast I feel like in some cases you can match or top that. Stepping in place fast/far I have found works my calves. There is a strong noticeable difference in my calves and legs since I started 8 months ago stepping. Stepping fast and for longer periods of time builds endurance and cardio. I have felt a strong difference in my endurance. The BIGGEST reason I have found to step in place is that I can do it MUCH longer than a treadmill. In my opinion that much longer period of time spent exercising meets my fitness goals of total calories burned better and my desire to keep moving and exercising. I personally would rather spend 2 hours stepping in place vs 30 or 60 mins on the treadmill. So if you can go longer and harder stepping you can come out ahead. Stepping in place is portable. You can do it ANY place. Allowing for more total exercise. Stepping in place allows you to care for kids/so many other tasks that you can't easily do on a treadmill. I have alot to say about stepping in place. 😄. But ultimately, I just prefer it and will do it more than the other two options. So that's a win for me!
@@WalkScapeTips Hey, I was just about to give feedback :) Haven't ordered a new pad and I almost switched 100% to stepping in place. Basically everything I said in the original comment is still the case. WAY more steps (sometimes thrice as much as before) which makes the game give me even more motivation. When it comes to stamina I haven't felt any difference unfortunately but I managed lost some weight which is my main goal :) I do about as many steps in one hour as I did before when I commit to stepping continously for the whole hour, which is good but brings me to my only negative point: I find myself stopping or slowing down without really realizing it when I'm distracted with something on the laptop screen or typing. Can't happen with a moving treadmill of course, but the steps should make up for it. Maybe this can be trained, I'll see in the future. TLDR overall stepping in place gets a big recommendation from me. --- I also noticed the game tracks steps when you don't lift the front of your feet in the air. For me this feels wrong somehow but might be good for someone with joint problems.
@WalkScapeTips what's the brand and model of walkpad you got? I also live in Canada and I've been looking for a cheaper option and something more quiet than a traditional treadmill. Please let me know!
I honestly don't love mine. It might just be a Lemon. Biggest issue is the belt drifts and I have to keep adjusting it. So I won't suggest it 😄. I bought it a year ago for black Friday on Amazon. Suggest you keep a lookout for Amazon black Friday deals if you plan to buy one.
@WalkScapeTips I decided to get one yesterday but I wanted one with an incline and all the models I could find under 200$ didn't have one so I settled on one that was 250$

Thanks for this video. As someone who doesnt use a walkpad, I see walking in place in my near future
For sure!
The fact that there's actual health benefits to this is awesome
Totally agree! It's amazing!

@@WalkScapeTips Thank you for the detailed answer! I'll delay buying a new pad for a while and see where stepping in place takes me physically :)
@@Benj80 Let me know how it goes! Really curious how other people find this longer term for this that choose to go down that route
@@Benj80How's the progress of stepping in place? How do you find the outcome?

I wonder, do you feel more fit already? :)
Sure do!
Taking half steps is cheating isn't it?
will it be for free?
When the game launches it will be free. It will have an optional membership to get access to new areas.
