nothing beats a class 43. I used them all the time in the Army, Birmingham New Street to Darlington. It was British Rail in those days. Always on time.
Bit weird seeing the hst with the livery that I use to travel on frequently down here in the west country up there in Scotland. Those 4 car mk3 sets must have some nice acceleration with 3 or 4 less mk3 coaches to pull.
@@dansmith4601 simple physics really, less weight for the power cars to push/pull means the consist could accelerate faster than the usual 7 or 8 car consists. Also those locomotives have been maintained very well over their lifetime in service, engines replaced if needed so I doubt very much the class 43 is lacking power now compared to the day they were first introduced. In fact they have more power and torque now as the mtu engine is better is both regards to the valenta engine, although 99% of people prefer that engine for the classic sound the original engine made compared to the much quieter mtu.
th-cam.com/video/C6Ng1HwRAa0/w-d-xo.html that video proves my point, the hst in that clip is formed of 6 mk3 coaches and reaches 125mph in just under 5 minutes, a big improvement over an 8 car set which takes around 8 minutes, so these 4 car sets should have some wicked acceleration on them but that shouldn't really be a surprise with around 4,000 total hp between both power cars!
1st June pocket rocket on the 15:54 Inverness / Perth, two re-furb 43s + 4 ex GWR 3s in green horrible seats not as comfortable as LNER, but what power un- like the turbo what really struggled on the journey up, look forward to more HSTs
I want to get over to Scotland to sample the 2+4 HST sets. I was on a Cross Country 2+7 from Plymouth to Bristol. It was my first time ever on an HST and I was very impressed.
I am a class 43 fan; I wish the design had been modernised with a mark 2 instead of the class 800s! Not many carriages required it seems. I wonder if they have the spares for replacement or addition at some later date.
I know one day the time will come when they have to meet the scrapman, but not yet. Far too much life in the old girls yet. Great to see them having a second life. With luck the majority will be around to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They still look as fresh as a daisy after their launch 42 years ago.
Excellent video !!! Do they have a snack counter with "hot food service" or something like a trolley service? Just wondering ??? Gotta get over there and ride those trains!!! Thank you for sharing !!! :):):)
Seems to be a bit of a sledge hammer to crack a nut with two Class 43 units pulling 4 carriages but (1) it must be better than the units being replaced and (2) presumably carriages could be added.
RWL2012 Wabtec haven’t been slacking, it’s just most of their workforce has gone to Hitachi next door, and not enough skilled workers remain. There have also been multiple issues with the Mark 3s having many bodged repairs which need fixing properly, which is different from each unit, before they can fit the doors (the only reason this wasn’t an issue for Chiltern is because they replaced the entire end section of the carriage because they had enough time to do so)
It’s been a real shame seeing the nice new trains sitting idle, while services are cancelled due to a “crew shortage” (ie they didn’t plan well enough to train their drivers in time). They were running “training trains” all over the country for months before the switchover, what on earth did they screw up?! I’ve bought tickets and reserved seats on four HST services now - two downgraded to class 170s, the other two cancelled and replaced with busses. Maybe I’ll finally get to travel on one sometime in 2019!
James Sutherland They were meant to all be refurbished, so the training was meant to occur on the refurbished set. They had to introduce classic sets at the last minute, which requires different training

Thanks Sam, there is some comfort there. The HST design was a landmark in British design and that iconic Sir Kenneth Grange look. The experience of riding on an HST is quite sublime. The new Hitachi stock feels like a soul less suburban commuter ride.
MrLazyhead I’d say that’s nothing to do with the trains themselves but the DfT spec. I’ve seen other operator’s interiors which look much better, with LNER and TPE looking at least more colourful and comfortable, with LNER now changing their seat design to prevent the same complaints being made as on GWR
First group had no say in the class 800s, the department for transport mandated it. Besides, what's the problem with the Class 800s, they are comfortable, reliable, and can draw from OLE. The HST sets are 40 years old, have comparably poor acceleration, and *will* become less and less reliable as the years go on, with fewer replacement parts available.
Lucky jocks? LMAO 🤣🤣🤣, the vast majority of Scottish commuters would gladly swap them for your Class 800's any day of the week, the last time these relics where fashionable Jimmy Savile was still doing the BR adverts, sure they're ok for a bit of nostalgia but there's no way they should still be used for everyday passenger services "especially the unrefurbished trains with slam shut doors", i still find it hard to believe that we've replaced our newest DMU's with these, the sooner they are sent to the scrappy WHERE THEY BELONG!!! the better, sadly that will probably be at least 5 years away 😭
I've got nothing against preserving a few unit's for the sake of nostalgia but they should definitely be getting fazed out from regular passenger services, not being cascaded to Scotrail for further use, if another "non passenger" use can be found the Class 43 then by all means use them for that but I wholeheartedly believe the paying public deserve a lot better than a clapped out Class 43 in this day and age.
I hope scotrail takes good care of those HSTs for many years to come, screw the ney sayers and unions, you cant beat a class 43 HST. GWR announced that they are retiring the last of their set which is on my local route which was a gut punch, I hope that they get saved possibly by scotrail and dont end up going for scrap at the very least, not happy about the prospect of not being greeted by a class 43 again on my journeys. also is that bridge this? th-cam.com/video/EsyyJaX0j3Y/w-d-xo.html :O
Possibly the worst use of an HST power car possible, as BR found out, also it Scotland. The rapid heating and cooling of the engines and stop start nature of the work will doubtless cause performance and reliability problems . That together with the increase in track access charges due to the HST power cars doesn't make these as good as may be thought of for the daily traveller, also increased dwell times due to single person ingress / exit doors although travelling enthusiasts will love them! A 4/5 car 170 much more useful,
They are finding serious structural rot with the mk3 stock, Wabtec are way behind with the refurbishment and upgrades to DDA compliance, it does show how embarrasingly bad our railways are, these are but a mere sticking plaster to cover a ruptured artery, in reality, the HSTs and Mk3 stock should be making the one way trip to Rotherham, as they are more than life expired. I suspect the vast majority of the UK rail network will not meet the deadline for compliance, and many branch line services will be given the Beeching treatment, as it will not be cost effective to provide compliant rolling stock

Oh lucky Scotrail, a clapped out HST power car hauling MkIII trailers - quite like, lets think, oh yes Class 47's push pull on MkIII trailers ....progress?
Is a 68 hauling Mk2F coaches progress? Probably not, but I have been to Scotland especially to travel on them and will do for the HST. I wouldn't for a 170 DMU and I'm sure many enthusiast would say the same.
That is a stunning looking livery. Makes me want to take a trip up to Scotland just to see in person!
Great to see the HST running in Scotland long may they survive
I'd like them to survive but with global emissions and so on I'd say another four or five years before being consigned to the history books.
Ancient trains which should be be retired.

I'm glad they still kept the new FC GWR seats
Need to get up and ride these myself. Thanks for making this.
Thanks for the Video:)
The HST is the coolest train, just because of the slam doors!
Good that the GWR hsts are going to Scotrail.

Those 4 car mk3 sets must have some nice acceleration with 3 or 4 less mk3 coaches to pull.
BudgieFan39 but the locos are also forty years old and have probably lost a lot of their original power and speed.
@@dansmith4601 Not really.. they've been refitted with MTU engines in the last 10-12 years and are regularly serviced.

In fact they have more power and torque now as the mtu engine is better is both regards to the valenta engine, although 99% of people prefer that engine for the classic sound the original engine made compared to the much quieter mtu.
Hence the shortened sets like this are often called "HST GTI". The 5-car ones on Virgin Cross Country could accelerate comparably to a Voyager.

I’m sure it will look even better after the refurb, that’s the old FGW interior.

Repainting things takes time. Better to get them into service ASAP and worry about that later.
Only one set has been refurbished / modified as Wabtec have been slacking. not "some"...
