Playing by ear is in fact really hard but the question is why would the backatage of this video put him here to play totally random songs make him look like an idiot for many people like me and before the whole thing say that he is great, well he is but to show that to the viewer you suppose to play him these songs before the takes/tries, its playing from ear and memory not even looking at the notes ever before, that sucks

Thats not really the thing when someone gives you a some cords to play without you figuring them out first you can’t play them it’s how all guitarists are you can’t just go and play something without knowing anything about its cords or notes even people who write there own music half to learn it before playing it
I couldn't recreate these themes on my guitar either. I could however, if I listened to them a sec before I attempted.
Anyway, in my own experience, it's very hard to recreate music just from off the top of my head. Maybe if they actually played snippets of the themes he might have had a better chance?

2:36. This is proof that he is a great guitarist and that he just doesn't know the other songs BY HEART. It's incredibly hard to make up those other songs on guitar, songs that he doesn't know properly. As long as he knows what to sing exactly, and in what tone, it's amazing what he can do.
Example, the Stranger Things intro. Amazing
And 3:36. Again, he knows the song very well on guitar, because that's how he heard it the first time, in the movie. So it's easier.

He is a 17 year old juggling an acting career, his own personal film projects, press, his education, home life and various other things than I can’t possibly fathom. All that, as well as finding the time to develop and peruse a love for music must be challenging. He has come a long way, but he has much further to go. Finn is a devoted, hardworking, determined individual, and I commend him for it.

Every guitarist knows what this feels like being on the spot playing everything from memory and as a guitar player myself this was hard to watch and Finn is a decent guitarist as well and this doesn't really show his skills
