  • @turboballer

My theory about why this song in particular found success in modern times is that it resurfaced during the time period in music where a single looping chord progression at a modest pace was very dominant in the indie music scene (not the genre indie, but in the literal 'independent' sense). Also, while not a one-progression song, Plastic Love very heavily leans on a derivative of the extremely popular IV-V-iii-vi chord progression that dominates eastern music to this day (you hear it eeeeeeverywhere in Japanese music, especially). It's just one of those songs that came back at the right time where the principles it was written on are back in style. If you listen to the songs that were higher in the popularity charts back in the mid/late 70s and early 80s in Japan, they really don't sound like Plastic Love. Just a thought I have. :)

    • @Chef_Alpo
      @Chef_Alpo ปีที่แล้ว +5

Perhaps that is part of the big picture, but I give a lot of credit to the aggressive promotion it received from various youtube channels allowing it to trend, which caused it to make the rounds to the Japanese obsessed element in the western audience.

Please....no.....it would stab the hearts of those with true ears. Over-hyping what is already over-hyped is cringe, suicide, and will be the destruction of Japanese 80s pop.
Leave it in peace - let the gigantic wave of classic Japanese pop/funk go back to its calm state once again.
TH-cam’s algorithm did more damage then good because people are dismissing it as a trend, vapor wave, future funk phase, without really appreciating the deeper discographies, bootlegs, live audio, demos and productions of these Japanese artists work.

The song MUST HAVE a 40 episodes Drama serie, about a young girl, i love how sweet and innocente Mariya sounds in the song, it makes it that much more Nostalgic. And we all can relate to that.
Story: guy travels accidentally to the past, meets a japanese High school female student in the 80s, we see the culture, places etc from the 80s, (Michael Jackson Bad tour, etc) then he has to come back alone to a future where Vaporwave is the trend, and he kinda moves on with another chick but he misses Mariya, (just the song's character not the actual musician)
then Mariya comes to the future but she doesnt recognize him, but they have so much chemistry they fall in love again, representing plastic love as it really is. (Volatile) Then she remembers him from the past.
Its a happy ending with Vaporwave, Private caller Saint Pepsi, and of Course Plastic Love, with even extended added Lyrics from Mariya to fit this story.

Yamashita has a oldies radio program broadcasted nationwide on Sunday afternoons. Being old-school, he accepts comments not by emails or twitter but by postcards. Because people making comments has to go through that extra inconvenience, I would imagine they would be well thought out, as well as giving the staff less of a job sifting through the static. Being of the same generation as Yamashita, I love that I can sing along with most of the songs on his program. But sometimes he plays gems of the past that I've heard for the first time.
Every years end, He invites he wife to do a program with him. It's a rare moment when you can hear the interaction of these two well established artists talk about their daily lives. When asked about how they feel about their sudden rise in fame on internet, they answered that they were puzzled and didn't know what to make of it.

I’ve always had a golden rule to not only listen to what’s popular. You discover so many stellar artists just by exploring and it’s genuinely more rewarding. Just about everyone listens to multiple genres, and it’s really difficult to learn all there is to know about the artists from all the genres there are, but just by delving into the unknown you find all sorts of things no one talks about or aren’t well known. It’s a feeling I never get tired of!

    2023 edit:
Jesus christ this video seems to get picked up my the algorithm every so often and it's always exciting to see new people discovering it! I've been seeing a lot of comments ask similar questions so I thought I'd address them here.
    1. The anime in the background is Cipher. It was an OVA produced in the 1980s for the Japanese home video market. It's been an in-joke between me and my friends as it has terribly cheesy covers of 80s hit songs and some of the worst English you'll ever hear in an ankle ever. Highly recommend it.
    2. I'm aware the song is now on Spotify and I'm supremely happy about it! Listen to it constantly. Crazy to think since this video has come out that it now has a full music video and even charted AGAIN in Japan. This time it charted slightly higher than it originally did in the 80s which I find funny.
    3. I know how awkward my voice sounds and I know that I mispronounced Tatsuro Yamashita in the whitest way possible. I cringe every time I hear it now

OK, I will be honest: I cannot fathom the mentality of people who would change their opinion on a song based upon just what you've said here.
I care about the song, not about which album it has been released on, what number it was on the charts or what was the cover. And frankly, I feel like people who _would_ change their opinion after that never really liked the song, they just said that because the song was popular.

Yeah, but if you refer to it as city pop in Japan, they may have no idea of what you are talking about. They would just call it jpop or "old pop" (I've seen a video of japanese being asked on the streets about city pop, and they had no idea of what it is)

I've been on a City Funk/ City pop trend for the past 2 years.... And I heard a different redention first and started this trend of listening to disco and 80s music from all different countries (i only know a lot of Mexican classics).
Love Mariya's music. Its so easy to find songs that are similar and "what others listen to" and love creating playlists for that

I don't think there is anything wrong or bad because a photo isn't technically associated to an artist's works/song. We all have TH-cam to thank for introducing people to hidden gems of music around the world yet undiscovered. I just learned of Plastic Love and Mariya Takeuchi. Due to COVID, and isolated indoors, I've discovered so many talented artists and wonderful songs that it has reignited my love for music. I'm in my 50s. Child of the 80s...what a great era of music. Today's pop music leaves a lot to be desired.
Albeit 4 years late, I discovered Dimash Kudaibergen (Qudaibergen) of Kazakhstan, my new favorite artist. The uncontested best singer in the world!
    Then there are:
Hua Chenyu, Alan Dawa Dolma, Morissette Amon, Huang Xiaoyun, Zhou Shen, Max Oazo, 7and5, 2Cellos, Madis, State Azure, Nigel Stanford, Schiller, Aurora, Nightwish, etc.
So many brilliant talents. Good times!

5:10 - I‘m going to say it. (: The b&w image we associate with Plastic Love today is a *much* better choice than the “trendy“ outfits you’ll see on some album covers and music videos. And also look up Alan‘s request for credit for the image on TH-cam which led to YT bolloxing up again. Thanks for the video!

Takeuchi Mariya is back on buses and billboards in Osaka... because she's back, baby. I have the Sweetest Music 45 (it was almost 300 USD on Yahoo auctions) just for the iconic cover art. Recently in Koreatown I found another release you missed:
Midnight Nightingale, a 2001 collection by Moon Records and Warner Music of her singing classics with a more, erm, mature timber. Plastic Love is included mixed from the live album, Souvenir ~ Mariya Takeuchi Live and track four is the original Karaoke Track (7... minutes) with no vocals, just the backing track. The album code is WPCV-10081 I got it for 200 yen.
