From a note by Clifford Curzon. With the Sonata in F minor, Brahms's genius leapt out, at the early age of twenty, in all its astonishing maturity; one of his biographers, Specht, considered it to be a self-portrait of the composer as a young man. The work was completed in 1853, though the extraordinary slow movement and the Intermezzo date from an even earlier period; it consists of five movements instead of the usual four, each demonstrating in a different way what Tovey, in our own age, considered to be 'a mastery of classical technique unknown since Beethoven’.
The two Intermezzos on this recording belong to Brahms's last years, when he turned once again to the piano to confide, in a score of deeply expressive short pieces, some of his most mature, reflective and intimate thoughts (‘Even one listener is too many', he said). He referred to these last pieces as 'the cradlesongs of my sufferings', and their inwardness of expression is as remarkable as their technical perfection.

What an astonishing work by the young titan, Brahms, breathtaking in its scope and vision., and what a magnificent prrformance, the 2nd movement, such beauty. And to think what our Johannes was to give us later !

The grandeur, pathos, and everything in between are in this sonata and Sir Clifford plays Brahms, in my opinion, better than anyone else I have ever heard, in that he reveals and explores all Brahms' too often hidden inner voices. Yes, I really do like Brahms! The 2 Intermezzi were charming and introspective enough to be intriguing as well. Thank you for this terrific remastering.

Clifford Curzon is certainly not forgotten by musicians of my generation and this is a welcome addition to TH-cam, though the frequency response seems a bit odd.

Nothing came easily for Clifford Curzon. To my knowledge, he was not a child prodigy giving concerts at 5 y.o., nor did he possess other-worldly technical ability similar to Sviatoslav Richter or Martha Argerich. His technique and his performances were the result of countless hours of practice and thought given to every note and phrase. AS a result Curzon rarely gave a poor performance. IMO, this is one of several exceptional performances of the Brahms Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor. Other superb recordings/CDs include Murray Perahia, Radu Lupu and Claudio Arrau. Note that Arrau's performances, as was almost always the case, were slower in tempi but nevertheless fascinating to listen to because of his fabulous technique and musical intelligence. Any of these four Brahms Piano Sonata No. 3 CDs will reward your careful listening.

To me, the reference point for this piece is either Arrau's recording for Philips, which I have on LP, or Ervin Nyiregyházi's 1972 live performance. Both can be found on TH-cam. Wolfgang Weller's 2018 recording deserves an honourable mention as the best video performace I have heard to date.
