- Which 5-door hatchback sports car is better? The all-new Acura Integra Type S or the Toyota GR Corolla? Automotive Engineer David Chao goes over 5 things he likes for both models, and talks about which one he prefers. Please note that in reality, the Honda Civic Type R is likely a better match to compete with the GR Corolla, but since that vehicle wasn't available for comparison, David decided to use the Integra Type S which is very similar.

David, There can only be one winner in the hot hatch competition and that is the newly updated GR Yaris. 🤩🤩
If that was available here it's the only one id take over the type R...
Too small and according to some friends , “looks cute”, so I can’t be driving in one.
I like fast cars, not tiny cars. That's the thing I'll never understand there's guys that are taller than me driving a Hatchback. I'm average in Height and I can't drive small cars it's uncomfortable, embarrassing and too small for my liking. I like Coupes, midsize Sedans, and full sized sedans.
Many people used to hate this integra, now people slowly can accept this design, including myself
The Type-S is 20x better looking than the regular Integra. The regular Integra looks like the Genesis's little sister 😂
The Wide body lines got me! 👍
To all the people saying the corolla just to test drive the type s. The gripe and handling are out of this world. One of the most fun vehicles you can buy for under 100k
The Acura Integra looks better, but the ability to control the all wheel drive Toyota GR is a great feature. The Integra is much more comfortable and stylish. The Integra is also better for traveling. The GR Corolla is designed more for a weekend track car than a daily driver. 9:48
David as usual I thoroughly enjoy your Honda/Acura Toyota/Lexus content so much as I purchased a 23 trail edition Tacoma and a 23 Honda Civic sport touring based on your benchmarking video. It seems that you are producing more content has your travel/business schedule subsided??
The same customer is likely not making this comparison. I'd daily drive the Honda but the GR is for fun. I'd be ok with both in the driveway. I'm 3 or so years away from the GR to purchase. And I'll stick with my GS Lexus rather than the Honda
GRC, awd, hatchback and more raw/fun plus it makes all the right noises
Thanks, David, for the interesting review and for paying attention to other brands besides Toyota)
Honda/Acura is the top brand in Japan's automotive industry when it comes to handling and car style!
Add a bit of bold power and elegant luxury, and you might forget about Porsche and BMW)
GR Corolla.
Thanks for the Great review, if only both cars can be bought at MSRP, that will change the game, maybe both manufacturers increase the number of production
After a year of contemplating these and a few other new carts, we decided on the Integra Type S, Despite the price, lack of rear seat amenities, memory seats or passenger powered seats, we do love the engineering, suspension, steering, and especially the manual gear box of the Integra.
No even Close, That Type S is what anyone should want in 🇺🇸 built by American's, Way more useful and fun Car and better.
I like 5 things your GR COROLLA David
Probably could've led with the AWD vs FWD and ended the video there lol! Really can't compare them after that.
The car with AWD and the handbrake please.
If I want daily driver comfort I'll buy an old Buick... for the driver's seat padding, put that in the GR.
If it were my daily driver, Integra Type S is the clear choice. If I were lucky enough to justify a daily plus weekend fun car (I could totally do that now if my daily were an older beater and not a 2021 Mazda 3 turbo hatch😂) then the GR Corolla would get heavy consideration simply because of how unique it is in the North American market. Actually the GR Corolla could do daily duty, but when I was finally able to test drive onr a while back it was clear the suspension is tuned for thr track, not the somewhat poorly maintained streets and roads in my area. Not that a firm ride turns me off (Mazda 3 turbo also has that) but the GR is a little too stiffly sprung to be tolerable every day. Also the 3 cylinder thing kinda gives me pause, but Toyota/Lexus may be the only company I trust to get it right. I've also heard the 1.6l inline 3 is an overbuilt little beast that can hold up to more than the 300hp it comes from the factory with...same for the manual trans/AWD system.
I think the GR Corolla is one of those cars that won't be truly appreciated until it's gone forever. It's one of those bonkers cars all Japanese makers used to put out in the late 80's and most of the 90's before they all became volume profit driven instead of driven to make unique cars that give you more for your money.
GR Corolla for me, Acura looks too much oh Honda Civic kind too old and boring
I bought the GR Corolla.
Same. I also have a 240sx I see you have a 300zx. So coming from Nissan to Toyota, how’re you liking your GR?
@@garagemonkey526 So far I like it.
The new Honda's/Acura's look amazing! Their performance and styling are top notch. Thank you very much for this detailed review!
No comparison, Integra S many times over. I’ve always thought the Corolla hatch is not pretty
Integra for me. Interior is better and I like the extra space and cargo. AWD is nice but not a big plus for me in a vehicle low to the ground.
Integra Type S has 4.0 inch ground clearance compare to 5.3 in the GR Corolla. 😆
I crossed shipped both of these and ended up pulling the trigger on the ITS.
1) GR Corolla is more readily available than the ITS. Especially in the core trim. The circuit is much harder to come by. There are only 304 ITS but 453 GR C listed nationwide on autotrader right now.
2) The ITS is built in an exclusive and famous factory as well.
3) The forums and FB groups are showing a lot more problems for the GR C platform than the ITS. Granted, this may not be truly representative but, in my experience it appears there are growing pains whereas the ITS is based on the CTR that has been around since 2017.
Honda civic type r
6:00 No sunroof and rear vents and armrest are big misses in the ITS
8:00 ITS >> GR Corolla
Ĝreat features no sunroof more cost when brakes down and dirt getting on edges and handrest to rest that elbow that should be shifting and grabbing the steering wheel a 9 and 3 position
Sunroof, sunroof, sunroof, so you can get skin cancer on top of your bald head, wtf.
I have an Integra A Spec trim with the CVT. A fantastic car to drive with impressive fuel economy if you drive reasonable. The only drawback is the interior cabin noise at highway speeds it's LOUD. Maybe new tires would help but Acura should address this problem ASAP.
Interesting! I had no idea of the Integra having much road noise. I doubt the Type S offers more noise dampening. I can feel and hear the cabin noise in our GR Corolla.
I have the same vehicle with tech package and I do not have the loudness you speak of. But I'm usually exploiting the ELS sound system lol
Both are too small for me. But if i wanted a hot hatch I get the smaller more nimble one.
I'm curious of the cost of ownership comparatively.
Toyota is well known as being incredibly reliable, and cost friendly when service is due. Acura tends to be quite a bit more expensive when it comes to servicing and maintenance. This is a real factor for many people, and I do believe it should be openly and clearly communicated as well.
maintenance would be more costly with the GR Corolla because it has differentials, transaxle, transmission, and oil to change regularly. As oppose to the Integra Type S which only has Oil and Transmission fluid (the transmission fluid is in the same system as the Torsen LSD). Tires spent will also be much less on the Integra because you don't have to worry about buying a whole set of tires to keep the AWD system happy.
have you heard about the rear differential in the GR Corolla overheating issues when on the track? I dig it as a Toyota fan, but it seems a bit disconcerting.
David, do you feel the Toyota engine will last as long as the Honda being that it seems to be pushed more to its limit
just from numbers alone, common sense dictate that a 2.0L Turbo...pushing out 300#'s will be able to handle a bit more long term use than a 1.6L Turbo pushing around the same #'s. Also the 1.6T is using Boost more, which would mean more time under pressure and heat. However, the GR corolla does have Direct/Port injection, which may lend itself to lasting longer in other aspects.
Old Chinese proverb bright flame burn for a short time
The Acura is DI though so it won't last as long.
@@85CEKR there is a 2017 civic manual with 1.5T here on TH-cam that has got 800,000 miles. So given the right conditions and maintenance it should be okay
Panel gap on the AITS is actually bad...I have it all over so as my friends! Ohio plant sucks
You never mentioned the most important difference is the Corolla has Dual Port Injection, but what do I know.
People don't talk about this enough. Between these two, I wouldn't even consider the Acura because of it DI.
May you explain, what's the big deal about it?
In short, Dual Port injection eliminates carbon buildup on your intake valves. The TH-cam channel Savagegeese has an excellent video on this subject and does a better job explaining than I can. @@lbcitylacounty4982
@@lbcitylacounty4982Carbon build up in direct injection cars.
@@85CEKR Why? Is dual injection preventing the engine or rear diff from overheating when you drive the GRC hard? 🤔I don't see why DI alone would prevent you from considering a car especially when it's a great Honda engine. There are plenty of other advantages and disadvantages between the platforms to consider aside from a long term maintenance concern that really isn't a big deal.
David, what do you really think about Honda? Obviously you are a Toyota person but is Honda the closest manufacturer to Toyota?
Honestly, in terms of engineering, they are as good as Toyota. Even for quality and long term reliability, they are very close to Toyota as well.
The GR is the better toy. The Integra is the better car and the one i would buy. Just wish it was AWD
Buttons price too high
TypeS weirdly has less luxury features than the Integra ASpec
Think the base Integra is a more honest and consistent design, the Type S is like a guy who only works on the upper body - overpowered for FWD and floating/tiny rear brakes. I'll take the GR over both.
I can’t believe your comparing gr to Acura that to me speaks a lot about gr ,,,,
Apples and Oranges, a $39k AWD 3 banger and a $53.6k FWD 4 banger....and he grew up admiring Integras at his age🤔 No one cared about Integras until DC2 F&F🐄💩
Integra for me hands down
If it’s not made in Japan I don’t want it
I'll take the ITS over the GRC ANYDAY.
Integra type S for the win 🎉
Integra type s
Bad resale. Stick with Yota
Have you seen the price of an rsx 😬 it can be beat up high mileage with ebay coilovers, and the owner is some kid who wants 10k+
is500
Well the Acura drives like a smooth quiet sports sedan and the GR Corolla is a rough riding tin can.
So basically always choose Integra over corolla.
These are two different cars. Your millimeters are getting old. Bring something new to the table.
I cant believe people are still into the corolla. I had an allocation and walked away from it. The car is CHEAP AND BORING. It wasnt nearly as exciting to drive as I hoped.
and you got what instead?
2nd gen BRZ. Makes less power but is so much more fun to drive. Stock vs stock they perform about the same minus the launch from the AWD corolla. I have full stage 2 mods plus flex fuel on the BRZ now. No regrets. The BRZ and all the mods end up costing what the corolla would have cost by itself and that car felt like a cheap rental car.
@@boost331BRZ is underpowered Subaru junk for the poors see them everywhere GTFO
Both of them look like over-the-top clown cars for the high-school parking lot.
The integra? Not at all
GRC has only 3 cylinders 😂
Blows up at 80k miles I bet
