  • Ron Escheté Trio with Todd Johnson on 6-string electric bass and Paul Humphrey on drums at Musicians Institute in 1994.
F.S.R. (For Sonny Rollins) was one of the Ray Brown Trio’s most popular songs (written in 1982). The story is: It was a Milt Jackson record for Pablo called A London Bridge with Monty Alexander, Ray, and Mickey Roker, and they were recording Doxy. Ray, of course, always in arranging mode, came up with a shout chorus to play after the solos. Apparently, Ray and all of the guys liked the shout chorus so much they said, “Well, why play Doxy? Let’s just make the shout chorus the actual chorus.” Allegedly, Ray said, “Yeah, that’s right. F Sonny Rollins.” So that’s where “FSR" came from. So, it is Ray’s take on Doxy.

As a comment to this post, here is a link to a photo of me with the Milt Jackson Quartet with Ray Brown on bass and Mickey Roker on drums.

This photo was taken at Parnell's Jazz Club in Seattle, WA about the time Ray composed FSR in 1982. I played a lot with the quartet in those days as I was third call "piano" player behind Monty Alexander and Cedar Walton. With this quartet, I had the opportunity to play with greats like Dizzy Gillespie and Sweets Edison when I was in my early thirties.

Yes! At the office. I was at MI for over 20 years, and I did so many of these concerts. Visiting musicians would come by my room and just say, "Are you free now? Come join me on stage." MI has been putting concerts on TH-cam, but this one and the one with Ed Thigpen and Putter Smith are the only ones I could find with me.

I live in LA and would love to nag you for a lesson. I'd drive up to your place, of course. I don't have facebook and your website won't let me contact you. Is there a way to PM you my email address so it's not on the main board of TH-cam?

Hello. I searched how to send messages on TH-cam. It involves finding an "About" tab on someone's TH-cam channel and clicking on "Send Message." If you can't find the About tab, you can go to the URL for their channel and add /about and that should get to an About tab.
I just sent a message to you through this method. I hope you get it. I do teach at my home and would like to hear from you. RE
