Lyrics
They're walking around
Head full of sound
Acting like
We don't exist
They walk in the room
And stare right through you
Talking like
We don't exist
But we exist
Daddy it's true
I'm different from you
But tell me why they treat me like this?
If you turned away
What would I say?
Not the first betrayed by a kiss
Maybe it's true
They're staring at you
When you walk in the room
Tell 'em it's fine
Stare if you like
Just let us through
Just let us through
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
They're down on their knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist
Daddy it's fine
I'm used to 'em now
But tell me why they treat me like this?
It's cause we do it like this
Na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na na
Maybe it's true
They're staring at you
When you walk in the room
Tell 'em it's fine
Stare if you like
Just let us through
Just let us through
Let 'em stare!
Let 'em stare!
If that's all they can do!
But I'd lose my heart
If I turned away from you
Oh Daddy don't turn away
You know that I'm so scared
But will you watch me drown?
You know we're going nowhere
We know that we're young
And no shit we're confused
But will you watch us drown?
What are you so afraid to lose?
Down on your knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist
You're down on your knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist
We exist!
We exist!
Down on your knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist
You're down on your knees
Begging us please
Praying that we don't exist
We exist!
We exist!
We exist!
We exist!
Na na na na na na na, na na na na na na na, na na na na na na na
Maybe if you hang together
You can make the changes in our hearts
And if you hang together, you can change us
Just where should you start?
As a trans person this kinda means a lot to me
Years later and this still one of the most beautiful music videos I’ve ever watched. Andrew Garfield gave a performance of a lifetime and he never said a word yet the emotions he displayed were felt. Not to mention the fact that the music itself just transmits pain and yet strength at the same time. I’m still get emotional after all this time
The ending was an actual live performance at Coachella that's the first Tim I ever heard "We Exist" and we we're listening to the lyrics then we see Andrew Garfield getting up on stage and we were just screaming! Amazing performance
I'm very disappointed with how the comments have been going from positive to completely negative and hateful, it's almost like the true fans and generally more opened-minded people came to watch it first and the stupid people slowly began to watch it too and spread their ignorance.
Garfield plays the part so well I kind of wish this was a movie
So THIS is why his hair has been so short in the recent videos/photos of him!
My spidey senses are tingling
hey wait he looks like Spider man...
This is a powerful message marred with hateful comments but it just shows as far as we've come the journey ahead is a long one. Thank you Arcade Fire and Andrew Garfield for doing this video.
arcade fire says trans rights
The old man worked the fuck out of that dance number.
Watching Andrew act is always a pleasure. He gets lost in his roles, to the point you can't recognize him anymore. Here you no longer see Andrew, you see this sensitive girl who's just trying to show her real self and be loved, in a world that frightens her...
It’s been years and I still come back to this video. I’ll never forget the first time I had my wig taken off in public, on the bus. I tried so hard to ignore them, but they saw me and decided I was an easy target. They took my hat off, and with it came my wig. They played catch back and forth with it. My roommate at the time, a very strong-willed, beautiful, black woman climbed over the seat and snatched it from one of the men, and shoved them in the chest. She told them they better think twice before doing it again. They were stunned.
To all those saying this is a bad influence, try watching the years worth of crap that has taught us to objectify women, that being depressed is a new trend and that the key to happiness is to drop sick beats and chase 2-dimensional pretty people. This video, right here, is the future. Embrace it. Learn from it. Let it open your mind and inspire you.
A beautiful video, but so sad. When she dissociates while being beaten, flying free through the air... that got me. Then at the end as she seems to go to the other side and the whole crowd is cheering her... that got me too. My daughter is trans and it's a worry, how cruel the world can be. I hope it's getting better so she can have a safe and empowered life.
I think many people in the comments don't understand the importance of videos like this. It's awesome to see anyone take a stand for the LGBT community and that's exactly what this does.
Win Butler, lead singer of Arcade Fire, said this song is about a gay son (and daughter too, of course) coming out to his father. But they recorded a music video with a trans character. Then, personally, I consider this is about all of us LGBT. Cheers to us.
I'm sitting t my desk at work trying so hard not to cry. I've been struggling with my identity a lot lately. thank you.
Here's the deal, plain and simple. If you infringe on one another's happiness and right to exist with no provocation or valid reason other than personal prejudice, you are a bad person. And you should probably consider changing your ways.
