One thing I noticed (maybe not even a hidden rule) is British make appointment for almost everything, bank, GP / hospital, even meeting up with close friends. Chinese friends may turn up in front of your door without telling you, not for British. Time and place to meet (or catch up on the phone) are set clearly serval days in advance. Once get used of it, you will like it, as it is very efficient in terms of using your personal time and respect others' time too.

i think one of the very british thing is small talk during work calls - they are obsessed with weather, football, weekend plan etc. This brings everyone closer. I’d be really keen for the next episode to include something about sharing difficult personal information. In my experience my English friends tend to tell me absolutely everything about their hardships with no filters, however Chinese friends (even the really good ones) will be reserved about details, especially if they relate to finances or family issues. Probably to do with saving face. I’m kinda in between - I will entrust all my friends which a lot of information but not every single detail.

Feel very much the same. Brits seem to know where the line is between 'privacy' and 'who I am'. The Chinese seem to equate the two i.e. they simply won't tell you anything, except what they want you to know.

These social etiquettes are surprisingly common in other Commonwealth countries that adopted a strong British influence (or at least in my generation; early 90s and earlier). However, I do have peers who do not have any knowledge about these basics as well. So I think it will boil down to the schools and the educators who are actually highly involved during the formative years.

As a Hker I can confirm with most of the traits. People still boast a lot but deep down we all know it is a bad thing which is comparable to gossiping. Talking about money status/salary is also associated with boasting too. Im not sure about the phone engagement. I think it feels nice to enjoy the food alone with entertainment sometimes haha. Plus it is rude to talk too loud during meals...
Still, I dont find all of the mentioned traits unusual. The colonial history has became the local Hkers' identity. We might feel comfortable with ourselves but the cultural shock will come when we connect with ppl from other Asian regions like China and Japan.

I can not agree more on the first rule. I had a very bad experience in my previous company: when i started my new career in this biotech company, we were asked to introduce ourselves to our colleagues during a team meeting. I listed my technique expertises i learned from different institutions, which sound like a boasting to British colleagues, there was a subtle but overtly hostility from them. Interestingly, the colleagues out of Britain are quite ok with it. One of the British colleagues came up to me and rebutted my claim by pointed out my weakness. I realized i made a huge mistake. I really wish i watched this video a bit earlier.

It’s more complicated than that… I think this video is oversimplified it somewhat, having grown up in a English boarding school and works among the Brit for years. I would say it’s very very complicated

I think delivery is also key here, British people tend to be less direct when they speak so instead of saying I'm good with this and this or I'm an expert in this, they prefer to say something like, 'I've learnt a bit of this in my previous company but there's still room for improvement...etc', like you always need to sort of make it sound less impressive. The thing is British people will understand that you're trying to be humble and will know that you're actually good at it.

關於階級制度那一段討論,讓我想到以前90年代樂團Pulp中的Common people( th-cam.com/video/yuTMWgOduFM/w-d-xo.html ),副歌中那一句「You’ll never watch your life slide out of view and then dance and drink and screw ‘cos there’s nothing else to do」我真的花了很多年才明白主唱寫這句背後的憤慨

Very insightful! I left UK in 2006, there was no social media back then. After more than a decade in Asia, I was surprised to find in person conversation survived. I wonder why that is.

Hmmm for the 2nd point, not sure if the norms in UK has changed already? I observed quite a lot locals don’t hesitate to take sick leave. They think it’s normal to go take some rest just for your own health. Some even know how to “play the game” for getting some “extra days to rest”. Instead, in Asian countries, if you really sick and take even a half day off, no one will believe you were sick. Any sick leave will be seemed as “trying to be lazy”.
