Weirdly, I think if Whedon had put it in Avengers 1, I could have gone for it - Natasha and Bruce actually had a fair amount of believable chemistry in that one. But imo, in AoU Whedon wasn't really trying to "go for" Widow-Hulk; he just needed to distance fans from Clintasha before the movie came out (and while watching it) without giving away the [super huge major] spoiler about Clint. If he had actually wanted a good romance, he would have had Nat fall for Bruce *during* the movie, instead of saying, "Hey Scarlett! Somewhere in the last two seconds Black Widow fell madly in love with Bruce and you shall now act her like an infatuated teenager!!" It honestly felt like even ScarJo didn't think it was real.
@ Ava Prince yes he is married in the movies but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t love Natasha because he does but it’s more a brother and sister kind of love in films.
