Great discussion, I think most of the commentary was spot on. One correction, Harald is still legally the king of all Norway, this election is only for the kingdom of Kattegat. Eric worked his way up to a high position in Bjorn's court, but he's still a skogarmoar and can't really run directly for king, so yeah he's trying to set up a win-win situation for himself. As for why he just doesn't support one of them, it's like they both said in this episode, individually Bjorn's wives are not slam-dunk candidates and could end up being defeated by someone else, there are a lot of powerful families and people in Kattegat since it's a major trading city. Gunnhild is not from Kattegat and doesn't have any children by Bjorn, and Ingrid was a slave and doesn't have any fame beyond carrying Bjorn's child. The biggest example of ruling through fear on this show was Ivar himself, so he knows how that turned out. Everything Oleg is doing, Ivar already did, he executed people who challenged his rule, he hanged his own soldiers for not doing what he ordered (killing Bjorn when he made that speech in front of the walls of Kattegat), and he's seen the effect of fear vs love when seeing how people supported Bjorn vs himself. Another interesting thing is that in the end, despite being in a position of power strategically, Ivar lost because his wife betrayed him, that's one of the reasons Oleg was drawn to Ivar in the first place, they were both betrayed by their wives and killed them. But after seeing all of Norway come to support Bjorn, I think the difference is that Ivar probably understands now why his wife betrayed him, while Oleg doesn't. Oleg keeps Igor around for a reason, because he (Oleg) is not the rightful king, he needs to force legitimacy onto the Rus people. Killing all those top ranking officers is definitely going to have an effect, and it's not like Oleg can hide the truth. There were thousands of witnesses to what really happened, everyone knows that those officers weren't any more cowardly than Oleg or anyone else, they all ran. Kiev is this big city, but Oleg has created this situation where everything and everyone seems trapped. Ivar, Hvitserk, Igor, the soldiers, the people. That's one of the key aspects of that story arc, and it definitely mirrors the feeling in Kattegat when Ivar was king. It's very interesting that Ivar gets to experience what that's like from this new perspective. He can look at Oleg and see how delusional he is, and realize that's how delusional he himself used to be.
3:30 Exactly, Igor is the only one with a legitimate claim to the throne, so what Oleg is trying to do is to keep him under his thumb, under his control, make him frightened of him so that he can rule through Igor. What he forgot and what Ivar realises (though he does genuinely care for the boy) is that while some children remain under the thumb of their tormentor for years, just as many choose to be loyal to those who were kind to them....
Katia definitely went all out on seducing Ivar, question is why. I believed she was on his side after this episode and next because Oleg would not be ok with her cheating at all i think. Thats death for her likes Olegs last wife, especially while hes extra paranoid even of Ivar now. To be fair Ivar could of been able to have sex all along, he has only ever tried with the slave Margrette who wasnt into him at all and Uvar looked very uncomfortable and insecure which could of been why he cant perform. He finally went all the way, maybe its because Katia helped him get there and made him comfortable and desireable for a change. Freydis never tried to have sex with Ivar ever but tricked him into thinking she'd have a miracle baby with his blood. I really belive this is all part of his redemption too, as well as Ivar trying to save and free his precious Igor. Another reason i belive Katia is to be trusted after all is because theres been no scenes at all with her going back to Oleg to feed him the info or anything, i keep going back and fourth with her but only because Freydis wasnt to be trusted and when Katia went along with Olegs torment plan Ivar after their wedding. Loving my baby Ivar more and more this season but also more worried for him since its last season 💙
@@samuelbalogun1215 the no wasnt because he didnt want to lol. It was because he thought he couldn't & didnt want to go through that or be played again. Wasnt rape at all, bit of a stretch there.
@@shannyd1 he still didn't want to it. Consent matter this was rape. I don't want no justification of this. The door was closed and she forced him and this is rape
@@shannyd1 that's not a stretch. Let this be a woman and this will be rape. Enough of this bs double standards. This was rape not matter any justification he said no likewise a woman saying no it will be rape. This was rape 100%. This shit happens all the time in TV series ether man or woman. The normalisation of rape like this case here is sickening
