As a young man at 19, I worked with a number of Paiute men in Fernley, where we built that golf course. The crews were segregated and when I reported for my first day I was told to go work with the “Pocahontas” crew pouring concrete. I did not gain quick acceptance, was called names, and many times Big Fred and I worked while other crew members sat in cars and drank Budweiser. I kept my head down and did what I was asked to do. Word spread and soon the white crew came for me. I always maintained my friendships with the Paiute. Big Fred was missing a thumb and when I knew him well enough to ask, he told it was lost in a hatchet fight. I spent a lot of time at Pyramid Lake during the year I spent there. I saw a water baby, which nearly drew me to the water, but I’d heard the stories and stayed on the shore by the pyramid. It was an influential time in my life and I feel fortunate having met the people on that reservation. I’ve been to The Stone Mother and was told about her. There is only what I can explain as a strong force out there...almost magnetic...sometimes that force would invoke a very strange feeling. Not fear, but a presence of something far greater than myself. I’m 46 now and have never been back, but would like to return. There is a force out there that is hard to explain. Thank you for sharing the story.

I visited Pyramid Lake often while I lived in Reno, Nevada. It is a calm and peaceful place and I remembered the story. Thank you for this beautiful video.

I lived in Palomino Valley and we would ride our motorcycles to the top of the mountain and look over the lake. Sometimes the water was the most beautiful Aqua blue then times it was black as the devils soul. this lake is a mysterious body of water. It can be calm and smooth but when the wind blows there can be white caps over 12 feet tall and waves crashing on the shore line. It is truly alive.

I think maybe the kids that went to the South were more respectful and better behaved than the ones the went North and now look there mother has cried a lake of tears and turned to stone, so ya know its better to behave.
