I’m Central American and we call this Jamaica lol and now I see why. As a child I used to help my grandmother fill huge bags with fresh sorrel my hands were always red and full of tiny cuts cause I never wore gloves to get them off the branches
My cousins boyfriend is Mexican (we are jamaican), he’s never had Jamaican food until he met us and I was telling him about how he needs to try sorrel and he didn’t know what it was. When I explained to him what it was he said wait you mean Jamaica? I was like what🤨 he said that sounds like a drink we make call Jamaica and explained how they made it and sure enough it was sorrel. Do not mind people who say that sorrel is Hibiscus. If you see the trees you' ll notice they look similar, a Hibuscus tree grows bigger than a Sorrel tree, the Okra is also related, both Okra and Sorre, has a bud, Hibiscus has a flower. Hibiscus comes with flowers in the color, red, pink, yellow, white, peach, the red one is the color that is used to make drinks and it has the color like the sorrel, maybe that is why people interchange the name. I live in an Island where Sorrel, Hibiscus and Okra grows and I definately know the differences. They are related but different.
As a child I used to follow my Grandmama around on her ranch. My favorite thing was when she would show me a new fruits or vegetables and let me help her pick them. The most delicious, tart thing I ate was Roselle, she said it's also called Sorrell. I would pick them and eat the petals one by one. So tart and yummy. I miss those days and my Grandmama.
It is in fact a member of the hibiscus family; it's latin name is Hibiscus sabdariffa. Also called roselle, and when I lived in Egypt was called karkadeh.

Next day I sive it and add my wine and alcohol. The left overs I use to make my the glaze for the Christmas ham and chutney for the ham. Definitely avoid white sugar. Try with Stevia leaves instead. Delicious. Plenty of cinnamon sticks also will naturally sweeten.
Pineapple seems like it would be a delicious addition.
