Oghren goes from a useless drunk in a bar, drinking to forget to a Grey Warden saving the world. That is character development.
I could not stand Oghren. I keep him on the bench.

Oghren cracks me up! He’s worth bringing along from time to time because of his hilarious banter with Zevran and Anders.
I'd put Alistair first. It's his game. The way he can be hardened mirrors how we can play the game. Also, he is the forgotten character in DA. He fades into history and gets left behind as a footnote in our hearts. We can sacrfice him or choose to save him at the expense of some of our ideals.
DAO - He is our king!
DA2 - He is our king!
DAI - He is our king!
DAV - Meh, who really cares who the king is...
I agree that it's his game but I still like Morrigan more.
I like Sten because you don’t get approval by kissing his butt. You have to stick up for yourself and prove your worth. Also he’ll duel you in Haven. No other companion duels you for leadership.

@@nickofmillertime That’s a really good point. I wish there were more times where companion interactions in games weren’t about saying things they liked, but saying things they need to hear to understand your positions (and, if necessary, persuade them).
@@kingleech16 I think wenduag in Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous kinda fits that bill.
If she think's you're weak and cozy, she will stab you in the back. (though once you manage to fully pierce her hide, she will warm up and get some fuzzy feelings too to a degree)
And this is also the reason why a lot of players/fans don't like him 😂
The best companion is Barkspawn.
I will hear no argument otherwise.
The second best companion is Alistair... specifically for his interactions with Barkspawn.

i kinda hope that was a feign to hide the his involvement in the game.
Considering the Crows sound way more chaotic good in VG than the evil assassin guild they were Origins, he might have not succeded in his quest to dismantel that group but instead turned them into something better.
Or they totally forgot about Zevs Story and involvement with the crows and redconned them into new organistation purely cause they forgot what they were about in previous titles.
@@TheAzureGhost Didn't really see the Crows as evil considering we could help them in Denerim nothing in their mission pointed to them being evil at least from my point of view, we ended up hunting down and killing bad guys for them after all. They respect their oath and Zevran breaking that oath of always finishing their contract makes it normal for them to hunt him down.
As for Zevran being forgettable is really the issue that you can kill him the moment you meet him, in fact its usually a safer mentality to kill first ask questions later.

@@TheAzureGhost If I remember correctly you hunt the ones that were sent after Zevran and you pretty much, but there was also another Crow member giving missions in Denerim, one of the taverns if my memory is correct.
In any game that Morrigan appears, she is automatically the best companion!!!

never got what people liked about her.. then again i rarely took her along in any of my runs so i probably never got to learn about her good sides.

The dog and Oghren are probably my all time favorites in Origins, I will never replay origins without the extra dog slot mod. It's essential.

I wish you could bring Loghain in without losing Alistair. I’ve never been able to find it in me to ditch Al for Loghain, but I really like the idea of using the Grey Warden conscription to take people who have done the unforgivable and make them useful, even heroic, again. Arggghhh!

I would always send Alistair away as a drunkard or kill him if I play a Noble Cousland, Anora is MINE! xD Other origins I am kind enough to get him hardened and make him king while I take Loghain!
slandered… I must say first, this is probably one of your best videos you have ever done. I am a huge dragon age fan, and I really appreciate the time and the effort that you took to really think exhaustively about these characters what they represent and who they are. I’ve never given enough thought to some of the characters the way you have on this list, but I’ve do feel like I really resonate with your top five. thank you for taking the time to do this and please keep the content coming. PS with the way you described each of the characters I really felt like you hit the nail on the head and this makes me want to go back and play Dragon Age origins again and again and again when that remaster or remake comes around. A man can dream.

The best game in the series without contest. Bioware had no vision of what they wanted Dragon Age to look like or be, after Origins was fully finished.
I think they did have a vision it just doesn't agree with what a lot of the Origins fans would prefer.
I believe we are still following the vision they have, just the gameplay changes really changed Dragon Age and for fans that can be more stubborn that's a bad thing.
Nathaniel is awesome. Was sad he only ever got a cameo in DA2 and not much more beyond that. His character development in Awakening was really well done, especially with how he linked to a villain from the base game. And the guy is just so damn likable.
It would be nice to see him in Veilguard.

Alistair, Morrigan and Leliana are my favourite party. They are important all through the Dragon Age series, also the banter between Alistair and Morrigan is comedy gold lol

I have a soft spot for Oghren. Yeah, he's there to get laughs by being a horny drunk but he's more than just comedic relief. He has alcoholism, brought on from feelings of loneliness (and that loneliness is probably why he makes so many clumsy passes at people). I haven't played Awakening to know how I feel about his development there, but I like that in Origins you can give him closure and address his personal life but the alcoholism remains.
Some players were upset that the alcoholism was still a thing in Awakening but I totally got it and felt like it was handled very well.

A Dwarf with no alcoholism is NOT A DWARF! Period haha, some players need to realize that Oghren fits the Dwarven stereotype.
One of Loghain's most humanizing moments in his companion banter is taking pity on Barkspawn where Loghain recounts the story in Stolen Throne of his own mabari hound butchered by the Orlesians. Loghain gets along very well with the Wardens hound in general.

I love ogrhen I think he reminds me of a lot of ppl in my life who have struggled a lot and taken 2 steps forward and one step back their entire lifes but ultimately they do make progress. I really liked him

Alistair and Morrigan stand above everyone else for me not just in Dragon Age but across all of Bioware's catalog of great characters. I'm a little surprised to see the comments hold Oghren in rather high regard, I enjoyed him a lot when I played but he is a dated character in some respects and it feels like most of the fandom finds him repugnant. Edit: 26:04 I knew there was a reason I liked you you're a man of great taste👍

Ah DAO! One of the few games i actually got the urge to replay immediately after my first run.... And i did! Romanced the queen on the second one, became the king myself. Never got to play most of the DLC's though. By the time they got out, i had migrated to other titles. With that taken into account, out of the original lineup, i had somehow managed to forget some of the characters. Off the top of my head, i could only remember Leliana, Morrigan, Alister, Wynne and Sten. This video reminded me of the others..... But when i try and think about which one was my favorite..... i just can't make my mind up. This is one of the few BioWare games that at the time, despite loving it, i didn't really get too attached to the NPCs. And i don't know why. If was really hard pressed, then maybe i would go for Lelianna. I do remember wanting to romance Wynne at the time.... But that was mostly an inside joke between the then writers and the members of the BioWare forums.
A Wynne romance would've made her several times more interesting.
For sure, Morrigan and Alistair are number 1 and 2. And they're also really good together because of the banter. It's easy to have a party that misses some of the good banter in BG2, but DAO really makes you likely to have Alistair and Morrigan together a lot. I like how their romances are connected to the main plot as well. After that it is tricky. Oghren's combination on hilarity and tragedy is cool. Sten's dispassionate perspective and dry humor are great. And Zevran and Leliana are pretty cool as well. It's hard to break the tie there. Zevran was impactful to my first playthrough though so I'll go with 1. Morrigan 2. Alistair 3. Zevran 4. Sten 5. Oghren 6. Leliana.
Yeah I forgot to mention how great the Alistair/Morrigan banter is.
A Morrigan romance with a dalish elf is probably the most fulfilling experience since you end up going back to the ruins where you lost Tamlen to the mirror.

@@SlanderedGaming Witchunt dlc is basically reusing all of assets. If you played Circle of Magi or Dalish Elf prologues, then you witnessed all 'new' locations that Witchhunt puts to offer. What baffles me is that Morrigan's eluvian is literally right next to where the Mother used to be. Not sure if I would feel comfortable as human woman, like Morrigan clearly is, going to ex-hurlocks nest where another human woman was turned into broodmother ..
Morrigan is legendary. Would be number 1 on everyone’s list.
Bioware did an amazing job with her.

Ehh... my DAO character was always a VERY racist elf-supremecist.
So I was firmly on Solas' side. Too bad we'll never get a conclusion to the story (I refuse to accept veilguard as anything more than a fanfic A'la Rings of Power)
1. Oghren - no explanation needed
2. Wunne - wise lady. Need more of those in place of emo troubled companions 😁
3. Morrigan - not really a fan of the Goth witch thirst trap they went for, she's no. 3 because of Claudia Black alone
4. Alistair - Not particularly memorable as a character in a vacuum, but he's too important to the story and potentially to your party composition, to leave out
5. Leliana - there's some sweetness sorely needed in a mostly bleak setting, but she does have her personal demons.
It's amazing how for most people Oghren is at the top or the very bottom. LOL

Oh I hold it VERY against BioWare. Zevran becomes if unromanced freaking Head of one of Antivan Crow houses ! They had both Zevran in DA II mission AND separate table mission string for him in Inquisition. How in the hell did anybody not check notes or replayed old games.
So clearly BioWare thought Zevran was important enough to get cameo in DA II, unlike say Morrigan, Wynne and others ... but they also wrote entire string of missions with him. Unlike most of ex-companions.
Bioware forgetting him ? It's a disgrace.
As for Story Purpose, Zevran is an assassin that failed his assignment, he has no other reasons then swearing allegiance to keep close.
Tbh I fail to see major story points why Leliana is with us either, or Wynne - both of them just hang out because they feel like. Only purposeful ones were Allistair and Morrigan.
I would compare Zevran situation to Sten, they both keep up with Warden because they have nowhere else to go. Both are expected by most to be dead men.
As for purposeless .. eh ? You mention most useless characters like Oghren, Shale and almost all of the Awekening like Velanna which is Morrigan from Wish or Sigrun. I freaking hate Oghren. I wanted to kill him in Awekening for what he did to Felsi. Disgusting swine.
Ah now I laugh at banter between Zevran and that swine "Tiny legs getting tired ?" the accent of Zevran alone is killing me there, and Zevran with Leliana about her vision. Zevran is such a troll. He was even trolling Wynne hahah. Why did BioWare not put him in game sooner, I don't know. Would have spared my rage quit over how bad Origins was in first place.
If Javik was for me savior of entire Mass Effect 3, then Zevran is clearly savior of Dragon Age Origins for me. Now you can see why I considered the dlc's to this game a slog. 3/4 of my Wardens even left Ferelden immidiately with Zevran by their side.
I do not know how BioWare forgot, when Antivans weren't even supposed to have this accent but because VA of Zevran decided to devise it, all Antivans now have this itallianish accent to them.
Leliana is with us because the maker has called upon her to fight the blight. Wynne is with us because she doesn't feel right staying in the circle while there is a blight terrorizing the land.
@@SlanderedGaming Well yes I know their reasonings, they are just very poor ones. That's why I put them under mere excuses to be there. We could argue that Oghren because he had dream in Awekening of seeing Hespith be broodmother and Branka instigating her birthing loads of genlocks, and said genlocks just danced around Oghren asking him to teach them how to read or whether or not he wants tea .. that Oghren is destined to adopt bunch of genlocks in future and raise them.
Just because Leliana or Oghren had visions/dreams don't mean they are real. And we know already Maker at best is Solas, and Chant of Light is mostly wrong.
I find it more valid to stick to Warden because you basically will be hunted by fellow Crows for failure, like Zevran had to consider - which was accurate given loyalty check for him. Or seeking more honorable death like Sten did, because he was dead man either way - be it in cage or if he returned to report without his sword.
Wynne just looked for excuses too, which was especially evident if you play Circle of Magi Warden.
@cracmar03 Zevran is with us, if we decided to give a chance instead of going the safe approach of killing him and you know if we were isekai'd in a world like Dragon Age 99 percent of us would just kill him, because giving him a chance feels dangerous.
Loghain is triple S tier, followed by Oghren, Morrigan, Wynne etc, only party members I never liked is pretty much Alistair and Anders.
I don't understand why people dislike Alistair so much.

Anders gets a lot more interesting between Awakening and 2 - he’s one of my favorites in 2, maybe the best
Shale is really funny and cute sometimes, but just not quite as compelling of a character as Loghain

While mechanically Alistair is strong. I actually found him to be worst companion because of his personality. So much so that as soon I could I stopped using him. And did not even bother with him that much by the end. And in my main party were the best characters Leliana, Oghren and Wynne and from time to time Shale and Morrigan.

i can't go there, can't forgive Loghain. At least he will have to go to jail, i won't kill him personally, but im ok if Alistair does it, makes for a good initiation and message, right before he becomes king. Sets an example for the country and shows to everyone that even though he is cool and funny, he can if he has to, be the bad guy. All kinds of f up

@SlanderedGaming he basically killed the King, his army, probably important commanders, the Grey Wardens, put the country at risk from foreign enemies, and a lot more, there's no way he gets to be alive irl btw. Best case scenario he gets jail.
i could add that probably part of his group get executed, some jail, some disbanded, some moved in washing the clothes for other parts of the army, i wish i could forgive him but borders into breaking immersion.

LOL One of the mods I was using had a bug that removed all grey warden armor. It was a running joke throughout my livestream of Origins.

Something tells me more than just Morrigan will show up.
I am more angry over lack of DA 2 characters. Besides Varric, none of them showed up. I waited more then 10 years to see Fenris, Merrill, Isabella or even Anders. How is Merrill or Fenris NOT involved, when first has her Eluvian pretty much fixed but inactive and Solas activates them .. and Fenris whether romanced or not partakes in freeing slaves in Tevinter anyways. Just like Solas does. And Anders should have been in Tevinter himself ! There is nowhere else he could go. Isabella should have been smuggler helping in Antiva anti-qunari resistance as well ... let's not forget unromanced Zevran should be in Antiva himself as he becomes head of one of Antivan Crows houses.
