    incorporating the washers as weights in these lighter woods is a genius move. Given how attractive the design is, nobody would ever know they’re inside.

    I made a batch of three of these for Christmas gifts. Would've benefited from plans but was able to get close with a little guesstimating. Instead of adding solid weights and filling with epoxy, I decided to make them dead blow mallets by using fishing line sinker. That way, I've got both the weight plus no bounce. They came out looking so nice I wonder if any of the recipients will actually use them.

    Perfect, I only like to ad; use a big hammer for a while and see if you like the weight. Over a kilo -2 pounds roughly- seems to me a bit on the heavy side but that is a personal thing, but nice to have that calculated before making the mallet. Happy Christmas and thanks for sharing.

    I guess you could have made the hammer a little bit more perfect by having the weight within on springs (not immobilizing it by glueing it together with epoxy). It should make the hammer less bouncing back when you hit something. Except from this it is a marvelous work. I might build one myself.
    Thx 4 sharing.

    Best looking mallet I've seen yet! Might you share the final dimensions? Seriously I will build one. I have the lead weights, I'm just looking at designs and I like yours the best. Paul Sellers is nice, but it's a solid block of wood.

  • @harterobba134
    @harterobba134 ปีที่แล้ว

    Saw your excellent mallet build and decided to make my own following your design. As you didn't have plans for this I had to guess on the measurements. Your step by step visuals made the process pretty easy to follow and I was successful on the build. It turned out really nice. Unfortunately, my measurements were off and I made the hammer way too big! It looks like a prop from the movie Thor!!. It weighs 55 oz and is more like a sledgehammer than a mallet.
    Will adjust my measurements for the next one, but in the end your video showed the many steps required to make a nice mallet. Thank you for posting!!

    What a load of work for a tool that is produced to get banged up faces anyway... I ususually make a wedge shaped handle with the widestpart at the head and a hole in the head fitted to that handle. Head shrinks a bit, you give the handle an extra whack to reset it. Works a treat.

    "little heavy woodworking mallet"
    Nice work.
    It seems large for basic chisels. What is its' intended usage? I suppose big chisels what? I am preparing to turn a mallet on a simple lathe, with well seasoned oak. I would need a larger piece to turn, to make one that big lol
    Just getting my shop set up better. Ditching the 6" 3450 rpm bench grinder. Burns everything I try to shape and rough sharpen.....made and remade a few lathe tools. I have a very large very heavy large 2 wheel pedestal grinder, likely a 100 years old. Shaft runs in babbet. I plan to make shaft size adapters for the never used big grind stones I have. I can make these on my wood lathe, then drill the shaft size(1"), and I have improved my big grinder. I have it geared down twice with a 1.25 HP motor running it. I need much finer stones for a finished edge, but these big slow stones are great for shaping or reshaping or material removal.
    Very cool though that I can improve my big vintage grinder using parts made with my simple old 3 speed spindle lathe.
    I got a cheap set of diamond plates and have been fixing up my chisels(new and old), and realized I don't own a mallet for chisels. I have at least 20 assorted hammers but no mallet lol My new neighbor gave me three chunks of seasoned oak. One will be a mallet. The other similar piece is now sectioned into several different sized blanks, to remove a large crack down through it. These pieces will make tool handles and such.
    I haven't decided what to do with the 2 by 12 by 24" long chunk of oak he gave me. For turning, some of it is not useful, but 90% looks usable for either turning or other projects.
    In recent years I bought some new and old tools, and am still missing some, but now I have enough tools to make some tools, or restore older ones. I am a jack of all trades so I am just getting wood working tools setup. I have been focused on metal working and small engines and computers and organic gardening and property maintenance/repair/renovation. I got to the point recently that I needed better wood working tools to make some tools and better renovate my shop.
    Lots more to do yet just to make my grandfathers old work shop more functional, but videos like this are inspiring me to do more wood working. I am getting into forging too lol
