Tip from a seasoned European city breaker of decades experience. Whatever you do, do NOT buy a Paris Pass, or indeed any such city pass. Unless you intend to take about ten metro/bus journeys a day and visit about eight attractions a day you will not get value from it. Most city breakers on average only use public transport 3-5 times a day and visit no more than 4-5 attractions a day. if you take the time to price this up you will find that a day travel pass and paying at the gate for what you visit will work out cheaper. The Paris Pass, indeed most city passes are a trap that most inexperienced city breakers fall for. I too was once guilty until I started actually looking at the costs of what I would have spent without it. Also Remember if you're an EU citizen under the age of 25, most Paris attractions are free anyway!
I am visiting Paris very soon, and was looking at ways to save money. Most people said that Paris Pass is the best way to save money, and I did the math and didn't think it was a good option for me. But not even the paris visite pass (transportation)? Can you share more tips about traveling to Paris?
Work out what you want to do before you visit. Then put each location on a Google map. Plan out when you will visit each location and do it in an order that keeps travel minimal. Pick out your big popular things {Tower etc} and do them first thing in the morning, plan lunch somewhere nearby [why sit in an expensive cafe when you can go to a supermarket and buy a sandwich a drink and a piece of fruit. then sit down and enjoy lunch wherever you want while watching the world go by] In the afternoon visit whatever other planned attraction is closest to where you went in the morning. [If the queue will keep you waiting more than two hours, forget it until the following morning - No attraction anywhere in the world is worth standing in a line doing nothing for that long] Plan the travel in advance on Google and see how much it will cost? Are there cheaper discount options? If you speak the language buy your tickets from the manned offices rather than the auto booths when possible. If there are discount fares the staff will give them to you, the auto booths won't. In the evenings pick an attraction, bar, club, restaurant and try to stick within walking distance for the rest of the evening. Check the various locations you're visiting. weigh up the pros of buying queue jumper passes [which are more expensive but save time] against staying in the queue [cheaper but how much of your visit are you prepared to waste in queue?] What are the most popular attractions you're going to visit? get there early and visit their website before visiting. They may have packages and deals when booking in advance or in conjunction with other attractions. You've got the first act right. City Passes are a trap many people fall into. You often end up paying more for a book of discounts you can't possibly recoup on because you either can't or don't want to visit most of the attractions offered.
Great tips, thanks so much. I've been looking at the websites of major attractions such as the Eiffel tower, the louvre museum, etc and checking out options to buy tickets online and save time. I will be staying in Montmarte so will have to plan ahead for everyday. I will def. keep your suggestions in mind. Thanks again. P.S. Love your writing/talking style :)
I'm 25 years and speak some French and going to Paris for the first time this summer (July). Thank you so much for making this video! Tu es trop mignon! Merci encore!
Hey. An important tip. Your bank card will always give you the best conversion rate so when you're buying something in Paris, and they give you an option to pay in euros or dollers, ALWAYS pick euros. Your bank will convert it and give you the best rate.
Some other “tip” : •learn how to ask for directions and how to understand the answer. Most french people don’t speak English at all but if you’re really lost ask directions from teens or young adults as they would be more likely to be able to communicate. •Don’t buy anything from the distributor it’s way too overpriced. •in trains, you will see foldable seat. It’s common sense to get up of those when the train is becoming crowded. •always have a cloth with some perfume on it, stations often smell like piss. And hand sanitizer for obvious reasons •Sometimes you’ll see people playing “gambling” game in the streets near touristic places. Do not stop to look or at least beware of pickpockets and do not try it’s a scam. •If you ever need to refill a bottle, there’s drinkable water in most parcs.
Other useful Paris Métro RER lines are Métro line 1 west of Bastille, Metro line 6 between Charles De Gaulle/Étoile to Montpernasse, RER line A from LA Défense to Marne la Value/Parc Disneyland and RER B from Luxomburg to Charles De Gaulle Airport.
A few more tips. If you see a WC (restroom)... use it because they are not always available. Just use it. If the Metro Train is full turn your back to the doorway and step up pushing people back with your butt. This works and is not as aggressive as pushing in with your arms. My last tip is to always ask to see something in a store so you do not get your hand slapped for touching something. Make friends with the clerk and you will have a better experience. Oh and eat as many croissants as you can because they are amazing. Oh and if you miss the last Train... you are walking to your hotel... Taxis are horrible and expensive. Just plan on walking. You are going to walk and walk and walk in Paris.
If you are going to a new country, learning a local language of that country would certainly help; have your phone with you to search the place with maps, although it doesn’t work at some places.
I was wondering about the wall outlets like to charge your phone and stuff. Are they different? Do you need to buy an adapter? I'm going in April for my bday!!
Loved this video! We had heard that during the transaction, if you say "yes, change Euro to USD" they can sneak in fees because they change the conversion rate to a higher rate...so it looks like a good deal, but you're not really in control of what conversion rate they give you. It's all super confusing but I think that's what I read!
I'm planning a trip to Paris & this was super helpful ! This also isn't the first time I heard about the scammers trying to get you to sign something !
Over a year after you have posted this, but these tips are very helpful. My daughter I will be going to Paris (2nd trip but much longer than previous) in December 2017. Thanks again!
Ceelle2 That is so awesome!!! I'm so glad that you're finding this helpful a year later. I hope you and you're daughter enjoy your trip this second time around!!!
hey! great tips! my favorite "don't be afraid to try the food! my husband and I decided to go to this tiny restaurant I had fish with zucchini gratin and my husband had the duck and omg! it was delicious!! next time I'm there ill try the escargot.
You are so beautiful, I love how you jumped right into the details. Other you-tubers, take minutes before they get to the actual information. You were very informative. You have beautiful teeth, your beauty, your awesome! Thank you for all your help. FYI: try and give us prices of breakfast, etc, etc. to your future travels. Have a wonderful day ~
Thanks so much for your great and informative videos about Paris! They bring back classic memories of my first ever solo weekend in the city. And you're absolutely right about the Paris Museum Pass and access to public transportation, especially on the RER. Using them and learning the language make you appreciate the Parisians' way of life that much more and those experiences therein transform you into a TRAVELER, not a tourist:)
Nice video. I personally like Military or 24 hr time. There is no room for confusion with it. I agree with everything you said except for the Paris Pass. It may work for some though. The French language is very hard for me other than the basics. I do try though even though it is with an American accent.
I’m from Paris welcome 🙏 it’s beautiful city to visiting and i know French people they are not friendly but you can always meet beautiful peoples so welcome to are coco Channel 💃🏽💃🏽💄
Super helpful tips, especially the pick pocketers! Thanks, girl!! 👍🏼 The French language doesn't have AM/PM, so that's why they use military time. One of the few things that stuck from French class haha!
Yes, they have am and pm but just don't call it that. "Du matin = morning; de l'après-midi = in the afternoon; du soir = in the evening. 24 hour time is used for trains, museums, sometimes for restaurants and for official business. Most people don't use it otherwise.
thanks for the video. there is something I need to know which is tips. how much tips should I pay foe example to the bell man in the hotel or in a restaurant or to the hoouse keepinf. also when and when not to pay. thanks dear 😊
Hi George! Thank you for watching! I've found that in Paris tipping is to up to your discretion. We tipped everyone when we were there and we never received any backlash because of it.
In France service is included, so no tipping would be ok, people still get paid normally. But of course if you feel super generous, go ahead :) I'd say at a restaurant you can tip a few euros if everything was really great, but it's not mandatory. At bars I have never seen it done. Usually for taxi you pay up to the superior digit (meaning if your ride was 14.20, you'll pay 15). As for bell boys and so on, I have no idea since I live here and haven't been to a hotel.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! Especially if you get tired of walking from one attraction to another. It's a fun relaxing way to see the city and you can always get off when you want visit a site. It's only $36 dollars and you can buy for more than one day. Discounts on groupon or online. I wished I did this instead of getting the whole Paris Pass package.
Some good tips, thank you. I've read that the Capital One card gets you on the exchange rate and is worse than many other cards because of this. Many credit union cards only charge 1-2% and give you an even/honest exchange rate. And that is better than a "0% fee" card that gives you a poor conversion rate.
Buy a mobilis 24hr instead of Paris pass unless you want to visit 20 museums in 2-3 days. Also the Paris pass HAS to be used consecutively so once you activate the card, it is valid consecutively so plan well. Good luck
Hi Sierra!! Thank you for watching! Yes, I do have one more tip that I forgot to add when I was making this video. Make sure you always keep some change on you because you have to pay to use the public restrooms. It's a real bummer. LOL! I hope you have a great trip!
Tips for Pairs. If your European and under 25 years of age take note that many of the Paris attractions will be free for you. If American, be mindful of the coins you receive in change. In my transatlantic experience many Americans, used to their pocket change not being worth a great deal. When paying for things in Europe do look at your pocket change before pulling out another note. Coinage goes up to €1 so you might have that bus fare or price of a drink in coins. Again for Americans, don't throw those coins, or worse still €5 notes away tipping every body. A tip of about 10% is fine in a restaurant [again check those coins before throwing down a note] but I wouldn't tip anyone else as they will not be expecting it. Before considering taking a cab anywhere ask google how much it thinks the fare should be. European taxi drivers are often rip off merchants who hike up their fares for unsuspecting tourists. Think what you're going to be doing before buying the Paris Pass. It's not the great value it seems. It may be cheaper to simply buy a day pass for zone 1-2 and pay at the door for the attractions you're planning to visit. Again ask Google to tell you how to get from A to B when criss crossing Paris. it will tell you straight away [Paris has good free wifi] what route to take and even give you directions to walk. And finally, if your French isn't great, download a translator app. The French are as 21st century as the rest of the world and will know what you're doing when you speak English into your phone and then play them what you've just said in French [translations are usually very accurate these days but even then they'll understand if it isn't perfect grammar] If they don't speak English they'll usually make out like it's a chore for them to speak into your phone so you can translate it to English but that's just Galic temperament, their not being rude.
Planning to take a trip there this November. And you said you have Sprint for fone carrier. How did it work in Paris? Aside from calling, I’m curious as to how you can avail of WIFI directly from your fone.
We’re thinking about spending 2 nights in Paris once we fly into AMS. It scares me about the pick pocket scams. Can you even get into the Eiffel Tower without the long waits? I like the idea of buying your tickets early and going to the top. I’m going to think my husband just wants to skip Paris altogether. What’s so amazing about it that I can persuade him to go? Would you suggest renting a car from AMS to Paris? I heard the parking is crazy!! Anything you have to say would be awesome. Thank you so much!

Just watched your video ..it's sooo helpful ..i have a question about transportation ? Like the metro and stuff ..are they confusing ?
Interesting video! Food: try self-service cafeterias. They have good food and reasonable prices.
thanks for the video. there is something I need to know which is tips. how much tips should I pay foe example to the bell man in the hotel or in a restaurant or to the hoouse keepinf. also when and when not to pay. thanks dear 😊
Hi George! Thank you for watching! I've found that in Paris tipping is to up to your discretion. We tipped everyone when we were there and we never received any backlash because of it.
Hi Alex. Just returned from Paris. You were right regarding tipping, but Paris is beautiful 😊 thanks dear 😊😊
George Marcos actually you don't have to tip in France or in Europe in restaurant or bar.
In France service is included, so no tipping would be ok, people still get paid normally. But of course if you feel super generous, go ahead :) I'd say at a restaurant you can tip a few euros if everything was really great, but it's not mandatory. At bars I have never seen it done. Hello. I was wondering if sprint has good internet speed over there? Or did you pay extra for the “high speed data plan”?
Going in a week , really helpful !
Any soulfood restaurants in Paris you can recommend? Or even good Italian spots?
Hi, do you recommend hop on hop off tours In Paris?
Trish Bautista no
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!
Claudio Bear & Co. Why?
Noooo.. You will have to look for bus stops to hop on. And it's one way bus... Waste of time
Thank you for sharing your trip tips.
I loved your tips :) get back on here and make some more videos :)
Some good tips, thank you. I've read that the Capital One card gets you on the exchange rate and is worse than many other cards because of this. i heard i can get a one day ticket for the bus and metro at a train station but r they also available at all the bus stops
This is so helpful !!
Thanks girl :) you helped me a lot ❤️
This had me laughing the whole time. Such a cute video!
Lovely video!! Thank you for making this 😌 its incredibly helpful.
hey alex thank you for sharing such important information.
do you have the link for the tours you took?
Thank you!
Buy a mobilis 24hr instead of Paris pass unless you want to visit 20 museums in 2-3 days. Also the Paris pass HAS to be used consecutively so once you activate the card, it is valid consecutively so plan well. Good luck
Great video! I'm going to Paris next month and I'm pretty excited. Do you have any more tips and recommendations that might be helpful?
Hi Sierra!! Thank you for watching! Yes, I do have one more tip that I forgot to add when I was making this video. Make sure you always keep some change on you because you have to pay to use the public restrooms. It's a real bummer. LOL! I hope you have a great trip!

Can anyone help. In Paris do you have 2 day travel bus services which can take guided tour including shopping places. Thank you
Planning to take a trip there this November.
Thank you very helpful! Xx
Daughter and I will be there in December...second trip but more extended. Working on the French.
Do you have any suggestions for hotels near the center for good price?
Thanks
