Hi Andy, I'm a little behind the times. I've been wanting to start a model railway again after 50yrs so started buying everything oo gauge for a year now and I'm in the process of preparing my large shed. Anyway i only spotted the P2 about 2 months back and fell in love and decided i would have 1 as my first brand new loco. It's already discontinued 😮 😢 so even though i have a scotsman i decided i would purchase one of these with steam generator, as they are easier to find. Now i have one. Yaaaay! Obviously i don't have a railway yet but do have a rolling rd so ran it in and changed the 211 cv to 60 and it does seem to have helped. But i have noticed when i use other functions such as the whistle i have double or more the amount of smoke/steam from the funnel. 🤔 can you or anyone else tell me if they have the same issue? And also is there anything i can do to stop this problem? This does make the loco bridge very quickly too. Brilliant videos btw 👏
Hello David, Lovely to hear from you and straight in, no I haven’t had or heard of this issue. What I would suggest is calling Hornby Customer Services today and explain all this to them but, do keep me posted and a bit of a strange one. I know they’re always updating the actual decoders so, you could check if your decoder needs one. This is all done from within the app, as you did with the CV’s. The app also needs an update from time to time too. Look forward to hearing back with any progress made. Regards, Andy 🙏👍

It is a shame that there does not appear to be any other mention of this fix on the internet or Hornby's own web site, kudos to you👏👏. @@davespratt9533 Hi Dave, Hornby indeed recommended these when I explained the issues of bridging, bubbling up, flooding, call it what you will, highlighted in my review video before this one and, in part, on here as well. I had the LNER P2 with smoke generator which worked only briefly. Only a very little wisp of steam and the sounds eventually stopped working all together - even though all sound profiles were installed correctly as shown on my HM7000 App. These steam generator fitted locos also short out my ECoS controller and my local DCC experts say this is because there are two decoders in these locos (one in the tender for the sound and one in the boiler to synchronise the steam "chuffs". Hornby claimed that these locos have been tested with all DCC controllers - but I don't think this is true as they are not compatible with the ECoS system. Hornby technical staff were at a loss as to why my P2 loco sounds stopped, and my supplying dealer couldn't fix this issue using the Hornby HM7000 app, Gaugemaster Prodigy 2 or NCE Powercab controllers. Decoder resets and re-installation of the sound files didn't work. Luckily I managed to get a refund as an exchange wasn't possible.
Hello Maurice, Thanks for the detailed information here. 1) Were you using the Hornby HM|DCC app on your layout, to run the P2, as this wasn’t clear? 2) As all the sounds come pre-installed, first thing I’m wondering here, is if you altered them, deleted them off the decoder for some reason or, attempted to and then tried to put them back on the sound decoder, before the issues occurred? 3) Can understand you trying to do that later but, not sure why an ECoS system would affect this, unless it’s the wrong voltage as this would only serve to provide power to the track, not control the P2, unless running in DCC mode which of course should be fine, following Hornby’s latest guidelines regarding controllers. Who are the experts you mention and you haven’t mentioned what happened when they tested your controller in the shop or, against another P2. This would then clearly let us see if it’s the Loco, the ECoS or all the new Steam P2 models? 4) Did you attempt to run this P2 in DC or Analogue mode as this isn’t possible. Have to ask, just in case? 5) Next, going to the ‘TXS Decoders fitted’ being plural on the Hornby website (and though we know these can be typos) then as you confirm, and though not overly stated but, what I thought too, there must be two decoders in these locomotives and obviously these need to work in unison. This information, on the Hornby Website, being lacking can lead to us thinking we could say try another set of sound files out, as another subscriber has done and that this might not be a good idea if one decoder relies on the other for chuffing sync, etc. Most would argue, why would anyone do that but, that’s going to happen if people assume it’s the same set up as usual. 6) The Steam locomotives are new and it indeed could be a mismatch but, an opportunity missed here I feel with your dealer as it’s left a little ambiguous, due to the story ending before it was resolved unfortunately, as to what’s causing the issue so, any more information would be good for us all if you can look at the above and give that information? Regards, Andy.
@@modeloco Hi Andy. To answer your points, I can say: 1. My primary method of control is my ECoS system. When following the ECoS instructions to read/write and re-address decoders - this controller immediately shorts out when trying to read the decoder (on a programming track). Luckily I have a Gaugemaster Prodigy 2 system - so I used this Gaugemaster (also on a separate programming track) to change the locomotive address. The ECoS could then be used to successfully control the locomotive. I then used the Hornby HM7000 app on my smartphone and was able to switch between the ECoS and the HM7000 app and control the P2 with whichever one I fancied using. All 3 systems (the ECoS, Gaugemaster Prodigy 2 and the HM7000 app) controlled the locomotive fine. This lasted for about a month. All my other locomotives and their functions work perfectly. I have Accurascale, Bachmann, Dapol and Hornby DCC fitted locomotives. I recently fitted a Hornby Class 50 with an 8-pin TXS sound decoder and stay alive, and this works fine using the Hornby HM7000 app and my ECoS controller. 2. I didn't delete or change any of the sound profiles, or change any CV's. As you say - the sound profiles come pre-installed and these were left as factory fitted. The only CV I changed initially, was to give it a new address from 03 (factory installed) to its running number. The parameters on the Hornby HM7000 app showed all "green ticks" and the latest firmware etc. was installed. 3. The voltage on the ECoS is within normal limits. I can't off the top of my head remember what the exact figure is, but this was checked on the ECoS system, and found to be correct. (just below the maximum voltage recommended for 00 Gauge). I didn't alter this voltage. The local experts I refer to are a local supplier I use called DCC Supplies - who are DCC experts and are also Dapol authorised repairers. 4. I only use DCC (not analogue). All my locomotives are DCC fitted. 5. It was this company (DCC Supplies) who informed me of there being two decoders fitted in these locomotives. They stated that this was the reason that the ECoS "shorts out" as the ECoS system is trying to read two decoders at the same time. 6. I contacted Hornby Technical Department about the lack of steam the loco produced, and they were at a loss as to why this was. (my P2 would only emit barely a thin wisp of steam from the chimney) - they only suggested I run the locomotive after filling with water until empty and then re-fill with water again, and to check I had fitted the correct chimney. The P2 is supplied with two different chimney types - and they asked if I had push-fitted the correct one as per the loco instructions (which I obviously had). After about a month, all sounds stopped. Shortly after that, it stopped moving all together, and the loco wouldn't move either forwards or backwards. I contacted Hornby Technical services again who advised I do a decoder reset - so this was done by resetting CV8 to 8 (If I remember correctly). I did this via the HM7000 app and also by using my Gaugemaster Prodigy 2. This didn't cure the issue. The loco still wouldn't move or make any sound. I purchased the P2 from TMC and as they had sold all their allocation from Hornby (Hornby only allocated them 10), they didn't have another one to swap for my faulty one. Hornby were also showing out of stock and as the locomotive had stopped functioning completely (no sound or movement), they advised me to return it to the supplying shop for a refund. I visited TMC in person who kept and tested the locomotive overnight. They tried to get it to work using firstly their NCE Powercab controller, and then their Gaugemaster Prodigy 2 system - but they told me it was unresponsive to both of their systems. The loco wouldn't move or make any sounds. They advised me that they could send it away to DCC experts they use - but there would be a charge for this. I decided I wouldn't pay any more as I thought it too troublesome - so they gave me a credit note, which I promptly used on something from their showroom. I've seen a few videos on TH-cam regarding the lack of smoke on some P2 models, and I've read a couple of customer reviews on the Hornby website - where a couple of people have had to return their P2's to Hornby after they too stopped running. I hope that this is clear - but if I can offer any more info, please let me know. All the best, Maurice
@@mauricekerrigan6759 Hi Maurice, That information is both thorough and insightful . Thank you so much. I’m baffled as to why TMC didn’t advise that they’d send it straight back to Hornby for repair. I’ve used Hornby and anyone can use them directly. You obviously call them, they pass on a return number, you pay the post up front and it’s refunded in full, if you send them the post tracked receipt via email, once the locomotive has been repaired, returned and inspected by you. This service is completely free of charge from Hornby and I’ve found Hornby extremely easy to work with in the past. Can’t understand why a warranty repair, like this, would incur a charge either? From the sounds of things here, you ran the P2 a lot on your layout is that correct as I’ve not run any of my locomotives extensively. I ask this just to get some idea of use, how many fill ups were successful before it packed up? Thanks again, Andy.
@@modeloco Hi Andy, I think a repair was out of the question. I even asked Hornby if I could purchase a replacement steam generator, but Hornby said that these weren't available as spares so if I returned the loco to Hornby for repair and it was found it needed a new steam generator, they wouldn't be able to swap it over. I bought my P2 just as they were released and I think technical knowledge of the workings of these locomotives was "limited" to say the least. The technical people I spoke with at Hornby weren't able to help much as they didn't know why only a little steam was being made, and they didn't know what else to suggest after the decoder re-set was unsuccessful, and all parameters on the Hornby HM7000 app were showing installed and up to date. I think this was also the case at TMC. They didn't have any more P2's in stock and they told me that Hornby were out of stock of them too (so Hornby wouldn't be able to replace it). Even if Hornby had some in stock - TMC told me Hornby wouldn't allow them to have any more. They (TMC) had sold their allocation of 10, and wouldn't be allowed any more. I guess as spares weren't available from Hornby and TMC were going to try and get it working for me using their technicians and maybe try a different sound decoder/PCB (if that was faulty) - this was where the charge came in. As mentioned - I'd lost faith in the locomotive and I just wanted my money back as I think the loco packing up completely after only a month or so made it "not fit for purpose" and why should something need major repairs/modification after only a month or so. Credit to TMC - they gave me a credit note for the full amount I paid for the P2 and they handled returning the faulty loco to Hornby. That's excellent customer service from TMC and long may I continue to use them. They do some outstanding deals, and when I visited their shop/warehouse in Beck Hole (North Yorkshire) and stayed in the holiday accommodation there, I was given a full guided tour, introduced to several staff and made to feel very welcome. My layout isn't really extensive at all. It's only about 10ft square and I only managed to run the P2 for about 10 or so fill ups before it packed up. I think one reviewer on the Hornby website managed about 20 minutes of running before theirs stopped working. It looks like you fill the Flying Scotsman through the chimney, which seems much better than having to remove the front smokebox door on the P2 (which was fiddly) and struggle to add water with the pipette horizontally! Such a shame, but the experience has put me off getting the Black 5 (with steam). I have heard today that Dapol are going to release another "Black Label" steam locomotive which will be die-cast, feature working front and rear lamp lights, steam and sound (like they did a few years ago with their A4). I'm not sure when this will be on the market, but I think I'll wait for this to hit the shops as their old Black Label A4 was stunning! (even though it had a £400 price tag!). All the best, Maurice
@mauricekerrigan6759 Thanks Maurice, Yes, if trust/faith goes, it goes. Do see TMC getting involved with many people on here and have per-orders with them but, as they didn’t respond to my last email so, like you, those feelings may change. Flying Scotsman fills from the top through a very small removable bung but, I got used to it and it’s all on a review I’ve done. Do really like Dapol signals but, will stick with Hornby for the Black 5 and despite some rather negative reports about their non steam re-tool, some smaller channels love it. It’s been good to chat Maurice. Stay in touch, Andy.
I’m sure somebody will but, I won’t be, unless there’s an issue. Have opened up the tender on other reviews when sound decoders and speakers need fitting but, as this is all self contained didn’t need to. I don’t take the locomotive base plates off usually though, just the tenders, again, unless there’s an issue. 🙏
Hello, Love you videos but I need help. I switched the sound profile on my steam gen Scotsman and now it wont work. Just for fun, I switched the profile to an A4, realized I could not use the steam gen with that sound profile, switched it back to the correct one and now for some reason the app is tell me its "missing sound data.” Please help. I’ve tried to reset the decoder, unlink the loco, etc but nothing is working :(
Oh no, I’m pretty sure it can be resolved though. As it’s the Stream Generator model and I’ve not come across this before, I’d give Hornby a quick call in working hours. It sounds as if the file hasn’t downloaded correctly and may need to be re-downloaded and re-installed but, it could also be separate information needed to chuff the steam as well so, best call them first. Let me know how you get and sorry I can’t be more helpful at this stage 👍
@@PlatformONE It could be labelled flooding or pooling I guess and was noticeable when the water vapors were throttled by this happening in the chimney stack, despite there being enough water in the system. When looking down into the stack I could clearly see water was obstructing the outlet and a simple quick blow or gentle dab with the pipette, provided, seemingly broke the surface tension of the water in that area that appeared to be obstructing (bridging) the chimney outlet and steam then chuffed as usual for a short time until this occurred again. Having both this Scotsman and larger ‘steam generator’ P2, that didn’t have this issue and was supplied with a much larger interchangeable, one outlet chimney to replace the usual double kylchap exhaust, was why I coined this term in my initial findings. A review of both these models are on my channel. For me the simple CV fix, featured in this video, altered the water feed rate and cured the issue. Does this help?
Thanks for the response. I've now noticed a pool of water just on the front footplate at the front of the loco boiler. Any ideas please. Regarding the CV I wondered how this value affects the steam generator. Thanks

Thanks again,
Andy.
@@modeloco Hi Andy,
I think a repair was out of the question.
All the best,
Maurice
@mauricekerrigan6759 Thanks Maurice,
Yes, if trust/faith goes, it goes.
Stay in touch,
Andy.
Interesting video , how many circuits of your layout will it do in one top up of water ? Cheers.......Peter
Hi Peter, It works out about 5mins of good steam generation for every 1ml added. Hope this helps 👍 Andy
I like to see someone opening this model and inspect how it works.
Hello,
Love you videos but I need help. I switched the sound profile on my steam gen Scotsman and now it wont work.
Just for fun, I switched the profile to an A4, realized I could not use the steam gen with that sound profile, switched it back to the correct one and now for some reason the app is tell me its "missing sound data.”
Please help.
What do you mean by bridging in this video?
Just received this. It has a hand rail missing. Most disappointingly though no smoke at all.
Everything else working ok
Mmm?
Ive had to set CV 211 to 55 what actually does 211 do please.
That’s great Jon. What it does is written next to the CV
Thanks for the response. I've now noticed a pool of water just on the front footplate at the front of the loco boiler. Any ideas please. Regarding the CV I wondered how this value affects the steam generator. Thanks
@@jonhill7448 I had this too until I altered that one CV down 5 and haven’t seen it appear since thankfully. I did alter the other one mentioned too, tried it, then put it back to original setting. It may help your model too to do the same. Did mention this to Hornby who seemed baffled at the time but, may know more than I now. Hope that helps you 👍
Hi Andy I have a similar situation on my P2 will this work with the CVs on this model ? Cheers Carl
Hi Carl, Thanks for getting in touch. My P2 is fine and sorry to hear. The fix is only for Flying Scotsman so, get in touch with Hornby. I did read one guy cured his P2 by going on to using filtered water. Have you tried that? Regards, Andy.
@@modeloco cheers Andy I’ll try that 👍
Hi Andy
did the fix altering cv211 to 57 seems to be OK now thank you so much
@@57bigjon Another sucesss that’s great to hear 👍
Good video thx will alter mine tomorrow
@@stephenbromley2302 👍 sorted mine Stephen
Hi still nothing. Just a small bit of steam then it stops. Tired a tissue on top often but no good. I will just use it a normal loco with no sound. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated
@@peterbradford5987👍
@@peterbradford5987 you can still use the sound if you press on if the aux buttons 21 to 25 it turns off the smoke generator I forget which number it is but it does work
@@stephenbromley2302 thanks.
Does steam come out of the smoke stack?
Hope you’ve seen my videos before this and full reviews on the Scotsman and P2 but, yes on all the Hornby steam Generator models the smoke comes out of the chimney/exhaust. Hope this helps 👍
@@modeloco so it is not a correct model then?
@@TC-qd1zw What’s your issue?
@@modeloco I do not like things which are not true or correct. You can believe anything you want, but please do not mislead people. The truth is the only way. So I will not bother you blog ever again.
If I’m misleading myself or others then you really need to say why. I really don’t mind if I’ve unintentionally said something wrong. I need to know what your issue is?
