I was the Tracking Radar Specialist that tracked all Shuttle missions and cover their landings at Edwards Air Force Base. I worked for NASA on Vandenburg Air Force Base's, Western Test Range. The audio that they could have let play would really give you the truest insights, I am even on tape during this time with Shuttle Control Houston, who' running things. We missed a great deal on this broadcast.
I've watched it come in many times from Orlando and once from the Cape. Yes, this is a great landing video. Cool when he pulls some g in the turns and you see the tips condense out some vortices.
Awsome! Fun fact the landing gear on the shuttle are spring loaded, not hydraulically actuated like a normal airplanes gear. This was to save weight. They can not be raised after they are lowered.
+jrocket73 I think he means that the landing gear can not be retracted while in flight. After they are deployed in air, they can only be retracted back in by the mechanics.
Is this why they're deployed so late in the approach? I figured it was because they wanted to lose as little speed as possible knowing they couldn't go around if they had to.
Phạm Thọ those astronauts knew the risk involved and accepted that it might happen and still loved their jobs, it doesn't make it any less tragic and awful but accidents happen in all aspects of life. Think of all the people that die every year fighting battles that have been produced by their governments when it could be avoided, the shuttle programme was the future, it was a step forward for mankind and a great cause. If we forever lived in fear of death then we would never achieve anything and just box ourselves into padded rooms. Stop ruining this spectacular pastime and don't be so naive.
Pham Tho, I know how many astronauts have dies however as Nazanin Jahanshahi said, they all knew what they were getting into and understood the risks.. and took the plunge knowing those risks because they were brave spirits that wanted to become a part of history and move beyond the horizons of the average person! I was simply commenting on why I like this vid.. so I want to draw it back to being simple and refer now to my primary comment. It was simply an observation of the landing, not an opening to debate anything.
Greg Gilmore Thank goodness they switched to a different camera angle that was zoomed out so we could see the touchdown. Before that I was like nooooo, the bar is blocking the wheels
Ethan Smillie I'd like to know why they think they can make us watch commercials all over the screen all during their programs. Not me, I don't put up with it when I can just turn it off.
The space shuttle is still the most incredible thing humanity has ever done. We literally shoot a plane into space and land it without any engines. Not to mention the fact that it looks friggin NOICE!!!
this is not a space shuttle it is a con, it doesnt go into space because earth is an enclosed system, watch when the so called shuttle takes off it doesnt go straight up it goes up and then sideways and flies away from the observer not into space and all those dumb people think its going into space, nasa has you all by the balls, Bill Nye from nasa even admitted earth is in an enclosed system there is nowhere to go its an enclosed system, it has to be how would we be able to live here if all the oxygen escaped into so called space?? they telling us they are showing us but us the dumb people just do get it, so they will keep fucking us with absolute BS!
@@kokaboba actually, someone without a very similar belief to this troll pointed out how the atmosphere would get sucked away because of the vacuum of space. it would get sucked away, but because there's a gradient of pressure from the surface to the edge of the atmosphere, there's not enough pressure at the top to allow the other oxygen to push it away. gravity does keep it on earth, just not directly
I watched the launch from this mission and it was one of the highlights of my life. You don’t understand how unbelievably powerful these machines are until you feel them rattle your insides from 3 miles away. EDIT: these are incredibly aviation-literate newscasters. He referred to the wingtip vortices and she said “landing gear”…that’s a nice change of pace from the usual “oooo, look at those contrails!” or “the wheels are down!” that you expect to hear from any given news team.
The news anchor said, "let's turn up the audio and listen to this for a minute" then wouldn't shut up so we could listen. A common reporter problem since Walter Cronkite.
Walter was a once in a lifetime sort of guy. He was the BEST anchor! I remember watching his reaction to the Apollo 11 landing as a kid, he was nervous and when Armstrong was on the moon he started tearing up.
My parents took us to see the Columbia land at Edwards AFB twice when I was a kid. STS-1 on 14 April 1981 and STS-4 on 4 July 1982. Both events were roaring successes with huge crowds of people: the first one was the very first shuttle landing, and the second was a great way to spend part of an Independence Day.
I wanted the news anchor to shut his trap and let us hear the shuttle pilots and the controllers communicating. The footage was terrific; my only complaint is that the news station kept their freaking "logo line" across the bottom the entire time.

Good old memories. I took a week off in March I think it was 2003 for bike week in Daytona. Towed my '72 Triumph Daytona down there for the event. Hooked up with my brother who lives in Tallahassee and we stayed in a hotel in St. Augustine. I set my alarm for 6am at the hotel to catch the launch. From almost exactly 100 miles away is was a clear shot to the Cape to witness the launch. I'll never forget it. Later on that week when we got back to Tallahassee, we got to see the Shuttle before that launch come flying back by on the back of a 747. It circled at last two times around downtown Tallahassee. That I'll also never forget. Seeing that configuration flying so slow seemed like it should drop out of the sky. It was almost as impressive in some ways, but more impressive in others as it was to seeing the launch itself.
Nice vid if the news station douche bags would have taken the banner off the bottom it would have been 5 star They could not put a water mark in the bottom left or right no we got to look at a third of the screen with the dam name across it But thanks for the vid the cleanliness, was suburb.
+Dizzy Jones Yes, agree on the stupid banner. And, to add, news anchors can't go 5 seconds without running their mouthes. That's why it was so much nicer watching these on NASA TV as you would only hear the voice of mission control.
I just realized that they made the nose gear shorter than the main gear so that the wing was angled down once on the ground which would cause it to slow down faster.

Man I love living in Florida. As a kid, I would always run outside to hear the sonic boom as the shuttle flew overhead on its return. I live on the west coast of Florida, just opposite of Miami and we could always hear it.
What a pity. That news anchors keep babbling on throughout the approach and landing. Could it be they think their drivel is more interesting than the actual communications? Even after he says they're going to shut up and listen, a minute before touchdown ... they still go on with their chatter.
TheRiskyBrothers I was a radio announcer for 17 years. So, I know all about the sins of dead air. But, the guy said he was going to shut up and let us hear the communications ... and he didn't. Avoiding dead air doesn't mean the announcer has to keep yapping ... if there's something more interesting than his banter going on. And there was. He acknowledged that fact when he first offered to shut his mouth, and then he couldn't help himself. He blew it.
smart451cab At least the news anchors *kinda* had an idea of what they were talking about. I remember watching a shuttle landing here in the UK a few years ago, and the woman didn't have the slightest clue. They were talking continuously throughout the landing, but it was just random nonsense not far off the level of "ooh, look at the pretty white plane type thing".
***** Thank you. Dead air means nothin' goin' on ... tune out factor in radio. If these TV personalities allowed NASA communication to be heard, that wouldn't qualify as dead air. Without their incessant babbling there was still both audio and video, which were overshadowed with their self indulgent banter. In my professional opinion, their presentation was very unprofessional ...especially after stating they were going to shut their trap and listen.
kdm71291 30 years and two catastrophes wasn't enough? I'm aware that it's a dangerous thing, space flight, and will be in the lifetime of anyone alive today. But, from conception, the Shuttle wasn't intended to be the backbone of the US space program. It was forced into that position by Congressional budget cuts. It was due for retirement. The Shuttle we got was a trimmed down version of the original design. That design didn't have SRBs, and had a manned return to launch site booster. People bitch about the NASA budget, and yet it is such a tiny slice of the pie. Compare it to the offensive military budget for a bit of perspective. I too miss the Shuttle ... such a cool futuristic ship (in 1980). But, I feel most people don't understand the awkward position it was forced to occupy. We had no heavy booster for the duration. And they would've been more practical for many of the missions we had no alternative to but using the Shuttle.
smart451cab I appreciate your presentation of information, but I don't know how you felt the need to express all that just from what I said, which you ultimately expressed yourself, by the way! If the Shuttle system was only in operation for it's intended purposes and length of operation, I would still miss it! That is all!
I am proud to be an American, specially when I see things like this.God bless America!I had a chance to see and go on the inside of the space shuttle in 1995 when it was in Palmdale, CA. Had to go through background check for it...
I've seen the shuttle twice. Although on top of a 747. Once in San Antonio and at ft Bliss, Biggs army airfield. Both amazing sights! The first being in San Antonio. I was at work and said to a co worker, " it would be cool to see it coming in for refueling". A short time later, I seen a plane coming in that looked different. Low and behold, it was the 747 with the shuttle on top. Amazing!!! When I was stationed at Ft Bliss, it made a stop there to refuel because of bad weather, I later learned.
Ning3n I know a 747 pilot who likes to tell people in bars that he is miserable with guilt because he has to spray cities or be fired. He has a great time watching their eyes get big. Of course he lies about his name and the airline, and pays with cash. I can't really be mad at him. I think it's funny as hell.
For those making fun of the 5 million dollar treadmill. It is NOT your average household treadmill, and it is NOT for the pleasure of the astronauts. This treadmill has to simulate earth's gravity, be energy efficient, extremely light weight and allow multifunction use. The space station is a research station which allows us to see what it takes for humans to live in space. It acts as a launching pad for future human space flights to Mars and beyond. If we are going to send people to other worlds, then we better know how to keep them mentally and physicals healthy. This treadmill is a small part of a very large ambition. Lessons learnt here will not only ensure we have a second home, but also help us improve the lives of billions living here now. Anyone arguing against scientific research on the INTERNET is a fucking moron and doesn't know how the internet began. The internet began as nothing more than a few scientists at CERN trying to share information and look where it is today! Things like these will be the difference between us going extinct and living forever.
+Sikh Atheist Don't lose your time with these people. Most of them are jokes of the nature without enough skills to understand why are living this life on the earth. Imagine if they have to understand what the astronauts are doing on the ISS. World is going worse and when someone realize that his/her life is useless, start to criticize everything and everyone. "sour grapes, as the fox said when he could not reach them"..
I actually had the privilege of seeing the first shuttle landing in 1981at Edwards AFB, i was stationed at George afb in victorville,California and a couple of us went to see it land ,it was incredible to see
For those saying that you can even hear the engines of the shuttle, you are hearing one of the two jets that track the plane as it laands, and then flies over the cameras as the shuttle lands. Those are not shuttle engines you are hearing.
+Douglas Crets Not to mention that shuttle is going quite fast when it lands so you are actually also hearing the air getting pushed away from the camera very quickly.
@@davidmoss3380 Have you ever been to the desert on a hot day? If not, have you ever seen video of the desert on a hot day? And do you have any understanding of what causes those "heat waves" that you can see in ANY direction? And do you realize that from a visual perspective, they are amplified greatly when viewed through a super-telephoto lens like that being used here? And finally, can you comprehend the fact that anything that creates as much turbulence in the air as a machine like this would alter the appearance of those heat waves a whole lot? Yeah, one need not be a genius to have at least a basic understanding of all those things, so try not to be confused. And you won't be confused if you don't decide ahead of time that the wilder the conspiracy theory, the more likely that it's true. Oh, and your statement that "it has intakes" can so easily be proven wrong if you just look up some info showing closer pictures with structural descriptions, instead of telephoto head-on shots like these which are taken from several miles in front of the ship. Jeeze, you just have your mind made up to the point that you wouldn't lift a finger to find facts that might get in your way (which is why I shouldn't be wasting my time on anyone who deliberately chooses to be a moron, but there it is).
Such a majestic beauty! And the skill with which the pilot lands it (along with the massive pressure of knowing there are no second chances) is mind-blowing to me! These guys truly did have the Right Stuff!
And Clint got that from the writers on the movie who got it from the Space Shuttle's original nickname given by the people who built it... the "Flying Brickyard".
Having 2 commentators , one interrupting other is better than having just a one with some quiet moments so we could watch for ourselves without being explained what we are watching every second of the footage.

And tip toe through the tulips with meeeeee
Knee deep in the flowers we’ll stray
We’ll keep the showers away and if I kiss you in the garden

I was the Tracking Radar Specialist that tracked all Shuttle missions and cover their landings at Edwards Air Force Base. I worked for NASA on Vandenburg Air Force Base's, Western Test Range. The audio that they could have let play would really give you the truest insights, I am even on tape during this time with Shuttle Control Houston, who' running things. We missed a great deal on this broadcast.
Awesome...loved the Shuttle program!!!
I was lucky enough to watch the launch of this mission in person. The wonderful crackle of those engines is something I can never unhear.
As is the double sonic booms when they returned to Edwards afb.
Still one of the most iconic man - made machines.
I've watched it come in many times from Orlando and once from the Cape. Yes, this is a great landing video. Cool when he pulls some g in the turns and you see the tips condense out some vortices.
You're right. Excellent find. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Unusual that a news crew would stay with a story that long. Thank you so much for doing so.
Awsome! Fun fact the landing gear on the shuttle are spring loaded, not hydraulically actuated like a normal airplanes gear. This was to save weight. They can not be raised after they are lowered.
The gear is released by an hydraulic latch and the spring pulls them down. During normal maintenance, the gear was lowered and retracted many times. .
+jrocket73
I think he means that the landing gear can not be retracted while in flight. After they are deployed in air, they can only be retracted back in by the mechanics.
Is this why they're deployed so late in the approach? I figured it was because they wanted to lose as little speed as possible knowing they couldn't go around if they had to.
Jose Carreras Yes, that is was what I was referring to. Once they are lowered, they can not be raised again in flight.
They are deployed late mainly to keep as much energy as possible
I remembered looking outside my window and seeing the space shuttle coming down and hearing and feeling two sonic booms it was crazy but amazing !
WOW! I've only ever watched Soyuz landings.. this is just fantastic! Such a gentle landing!
And 21 Astronauts died
Phạm Thọ those astronauts knew the risk involved and accepted that it might happen and still loved their jobs, it doesn't make it any less tragic and awful but accidents happen in all aspects of life. Think of all the people that die every year fighting battles that have been produced by their governments when it could be avoided, the shuttle programme was the future, it was a step forward for mankind and a great cause. If we forever lived in fear of death then we would never achieve anything and just box ourselves into padded rooms. Stop ruining this spectacular pastime and don't be so naive.
Phạm Thọ You don't mention how many people have died on the roads? Those astronauts died attempting to advance the human race and that includes you!
Nazanin Jahanshahi Very Very Very Well Said..
Fantastic video, thank you very much!
Love the fact, that the wings of the shuttle are only for the last 3 minutes of the mission.
Too bad they have all that crap on the screen.
Greg Gilmore - Move! It thought to the baner 😅
Just that NASA logo on the top right

The space shuttle is still the most incredible thing humanity has ever done. We literally shoot a plane into space and land it without any engines. Not to mention the fact that it looks friggin NOICE!!!
"this was marred by the incessant chatter of the news reporters" +1
this is not a space shuttle it is a con, it doesnt go into space because earth is an enclosed system, watch when the so called shuttle takes off it doesnt go straight up it goes up and then sideways and flies away from the observer not into space and all those dumb people think its going into space, nasa has you all by the balls, Bill Nye from nasa even admitted earth is in an enclosed system there is nowhere to go its an enclosed system, it has to be how would we be able to live here if all the oxygen escaped into so called space?? they telling us they are showing us but us the dumb people just do get it, so they will keep fucking us with absolute BS!
@@seanthompson258 to obtain orbit you have to go at an angle. you need horizontal velocity and vertical velocity to get to the proper altitude
That’s cool. I would probably use this in stuff if there want the giant news thing right in the middle.
I don't know why it was on my reccomended, but it was, and I'm glad it was
I watched the launch from this mission and it was one of the highlights of my life. You don’t understand how unbelievably powerful these machines are until you feel them rattle your insides from 3 miles away.
EDIT: these are incredibly aviation-literate newscasters. He referred to the wingtip vortices and she said “landing gear”…that’s a nice change of pace from the usual “oooo, look at those contrails!” or “the wheels are down!” that you expect to hear from any given news team.
i think this is from the Bakersfield NBC affiliate, so they probably covered all the landings at Edwards
my husband and I lived in Mojave California and would get a nice view of the shuttle flying over to land at Edwards AFB.
Hope your view wasn't obscured by a giant blue banner.
@@piggypiggypig1746 lol
I was stationed there from 76-83 and saw all of them. I used to go into Mojave to eat sometimes.
I was thinking the same thing. I was like "shut the fuck up, will ya!"

@OneGun Son oh STFU, schizophrenic conspiracy theorist. No one takes you idiots seriously.
Absolutely amazing.. Thank you sharing brother🙏
Yes vere Rarely Moment To watch SHUTTLE Landing Well Done
Reporters: its all about THEM. Ron Burgundys in every one of them. Shut up and let the story say everything that needs to be said.
It was descending so fast I was scared even thought this happened more than a decade ago..
That was great footage.Except for the massive graphics
Pure engineering and balls of steel. Loved it.
My parents took us to see the Columbia land at Edwards AFB twice when I was a kid. STS-1 on 14 April 1981 and STS-4 on 4 July 1982. Both events were roaring successes with huge crowds of people: the first one was the very first shuttle landing, and the second was a great way to spend part of an Independence Day.
visually awesome...audio very distracting...why do anchors love the sound of their own voices most right when they should be quiet? :)
Gorgeous. It’s bittersweet, too, haunted by the memory of its two sister ships that never had a final touchdown.
I wanted the news anchor to shut his trap and let us hear the shuttle pilots and the controllers communicating. The footage was terrific; my only complaint is that the news station kept their freaking "logo line" across the bottom the entire time.
this is not a space shuttle it is a con, it doesnt go into space because earth is an enclosed system, watch when the so called shuttle takes off it doesnt go straight up it goes up and then sideways and flies away from the observer not into space and all those dumb people think its going into space, nasa has you all by the balls, Bill Nye from nasa even admitted earth is in an enclosed system there is nowhere to go its an enclosed system, it has to be how would we be able to live here if all the oxygen escaped into so called space?? they telling us they are showing us but us the dumb people just do get it, so they will keep fucking us with absolute BS!
Awesome upload, thanks. I'm in awe of the shuttle pilots and crew
Damn, I wanted to hear the sports.
hahahah
3 min to cover the billion dollar space program..... Now on to SPorts !!
:)
Nice vid if the news station douche bags would have taken the banner off the bottom it would have been 5 star They could not put a water mark in the bottom left or right no we got to look at a third of the screen with the dam name across it But thanks for the vid the cleanliness, was suburb.
superb...
+Dizzy Jones Yes, agree on the stupid banner. And, to add, news anchors can't go 5 seconds without running their mouthes. That's why it was so much nicer watching these on NASA TV as you would only hear the voice of mission control.
+Keith Sibille Plus, they gave it about five seconds after touchdown, before cutting it off. Nice :-(
idk, it felt kind of urban
I, for one, am glad it was there. I never could have figured out the "Breaking News - Shuttle Landing" without it.
You don't even see skilled pilots landing planes that well.. that pilot has some SERIOUS skills

0:20 to 0:40s show really well the angle at which the Orbiter comes down in altitude, hence the nickname "The flying brick". Thanks for sharing.
I just realized that they made the nose gear shorter than the main gear so that the wing was angled down once on the ground which would cause it to slow down faster.
The banners, the one thing I hate about American television. Using one sixth of the screen and such...
Salad Spinner Always something isn't it. Always have to find SOMETHING to hate on us Americans. And sir/ma'am, what nation are you from so I can hate on your country?

Thank you for you kind response. We'll take this into account when we're planning our next event of "How to Hate Americans".
And good luck, I'll doubt you'll find banners on our television networks. We like to use all 2 million pixels for actual footage.
+Salad Spinner You were only talking about American TV not Americans them selves.
So wtf does he have to sa?
Even worse have you seen a Japanese TV screen ?
Let me get this straight; you hate ONE thing about American television?! 😳

Even after he says they're going to shut up and listen, a minute before touchdown ... they still go on with their chatter.
smart451cab It`s for the benefit of the poor sighted viewers
smart451cab they're probably required to keep talking, having "dead air" has been a sin ever since radio
TheRiskyBrothers
I was a radio announcer for 17 years.
*****
Thank you.
I miss the Space Shuttle era..........what a shame.
kdm71291 30 years and two catastrophes wasn't enough?
That is all!
kdm71291 You're right. I should've just said it was overdue for retirement.
+kdm71291 Just wait a couple of years and SpaveX will start a much more exciting era (:

I've seen the shuttle twice. Although on top of a 747. Once in San Antonio and at ft Bliss, Biggs army airfield. Both amazing sights! The first being in San Antonio. I was at work and said to a co worker, " it would be cool to see it coming in for refueling". A short time later, I seen a plane coming in that looked different. Low and behold, it was the 747 with the shuttle on top. Amazing!!! When I was stationed at Ft Bliss, it made a stop there to refuel because of bad weather, I later learned.

David Moss nope.
Oh dear. Tinfoil hat alert.
