These soothing melodies are truly the best way to end a busy day. I feel lighter and more at ease every time I listen to them.

In 1996, I drove out to Western Maryland to hear Barry Tuckwell perform his second to last concert as a soloist. I'll never forget it as long as I live. He performed Mozart Horn Concerto No 4 without missing a single note. But that was nothing compared to the pure, solid wall of sound coming from his horn. After the first movement ended the guy next to me said, "Oh my God, my chair was vibrating." We were in the back of the hall on the second deck. These are excellent recordings, but I'm afraid there hasn't been a mic made yet that will ever capture the dynamic sound Barry Tuckwell has in a live performance. It is engulfing.

People say they go to sleep to this; how? Mozart's music is so vibrant and so lively that it makes me want to get up and go do something.

God I hate that stereotype of classical music!

For most people, it’s soothing. Also there are not harmonically tense passages and moods, say, in the vein of the brutalism of Stravinsky or the stridency of Ralph Vaughn Williams 4th Symphony, or much of the contemporary classical music of the 20th century. When you have that kind of music (and don’t forget deeply brooding and foreboding Horror movie film soundtracks), and rock and metal music, the music of Mozart and his contemporaries seems relatively light, harmonically simple, predictable and airy, but comparison... regardless of technical merits and expressiveness of the composer or musicians performing it. This is the stuff of traditional classical music and tonality, and not the extended tonality or even the 12-tone serialism, atonality, etc... that would come later that is often times uncomfortable if not outright off-putting for some to listen to... but nobody says that music made them want to “fall asleep”.

How did someone like Mozart even exist - dead at 35 with such a huge body of work.

    • @skyclaw

The tragic thing is that his style was just starting to mature when he died. I wish I could hear what he would have composed in later life-he was only slightly older than Beethoven.

Hacer sonar bien un clarinete, un violín o un oboe, instrumentos mucho más melódicos estos tiene su dificultad. Lograr lo mismo y elevarlo al cantar de los ángeles con una trompa sólo puede deberse a un don de nuestro Señor.

There is a fine line between frivolous music and light music, and it is extremely hard to command it. This is why Mozart is inevitable.
