However, in general, bodies to be cremated are put in a cardboard box and sent through that way, (I've seen video of this on several documentaries). Think of the poor workers if they had to lift and move all those coffins all day!

My mother in law cremated her husband and dug a hole and poured the ashes in. Then planted a young tree in the ashes. Trees love nitrogen and will eventually suck the ashes into its root system and eventually all through the branches. She can see it out her kitchen window. and sometimes talks to it. Floats her boat so why not.

You forgot about cryo-preservation. Body is frozen to a point at which all processes stop. This allows you to preserve the body as long as you can maintain the temperature. This is usually done in hopes of somehow being resurrected by science in the future.
i have 2 other ideas that would be good for bodies, 1- dropped into active (live) volcanoes, or 2 - a tight sealed tube then dropped into the deepest trench area of the ocean(s), plenty of room down there.

It's pretty straightforward. The tree gets the leftover nutrients from the ashes, and that helps it to grow. It's like putting kitchen compost on your flowerbed. Dead things are very nutritious to plants (providing that the dead thing wasn't host to anything toxic to said plant), though said dead thing generally needs to be broken down by bacteria first (or burned).
I would totally donate my body for plastination. I saw the bodies exhibit in Seattle and it was incredible. Plus donating for science studies can help the people I leave behind so heck yeah. Plus organ donation first and foremost of course.

He was a beloved musician and cultural/social figure in New Orleans for nearly 90 years, (and also a great friend of my husband's). When he died about 5 years ago he was embalmed and for viewing in the funeral home he was posed in his classic pose of standing up holding his walking stick, leaning slightly back so as to see and engage with everything around him. The viewing was closed to the public and pictures were forbidden, but someone sneaked one out and it was seriously, seriously spooky. He didn't look dead at all.

A small point ...in modern times lye is normally taken to be sodium hydroxide (aka: caustic soda) . Potassium hydroxide (aka: caustic potash) was the lye of long ago, being made by leaching wood ashes . Today both are known as "lye" and are used commonly in soap making (saponification of fats and oils) . The main difference being that sodium hydroxide makes a hard soap that is a bit harsh while potassium hydroxide makes a "soft soap" that is more gentle than a hard soap . I went to one of those body worlds thing and I thought it was so fascinating (I was also like 7-8 at the time and wonder why my dad allowed me to go) like they had the bodies set up doing normal things like two people were playing chess and you could see how all the muscles and stuff looked and then there were slices of cut up people like people who had been thinly sliced like meat and you could see what the organs looked like, I thought it was really cool, but I to be honest would not want to have my insides on display

My mother in law cremated her husband and dug a hole and poured the ashes in. Then planted a young tree in the ashes. Trees love nitrogen and will eventually suck the ashes into its root system and eventually all through the branches. She can see it out her kitchen window. and sometimes talks to it. Floats her boat so why not.

Body is frozen to a point at which all processes stop. This allows you to preserve the body as long as you can maintain the temperature. This is usually done in hopes of somehow being resurrected by science in the future.
i have 2 other ideas that would be good for bodies, 1- dropped into active (live) volcanoes, or 2 - a tight sealed tube then dropped into the deepest trench area of the ocean(s), plenty of room down there.

It's pretty straightforward. The tree gets the leftover nutrients from the ashes, and that helps it to grow. It's like putting kitchen compost on your flowerbed. Dead things are very nutritious to plants (providing that the dead thing wasn't host to anything toxic to said plant), though said dead thing generally needs to be broken down by bacteria first (or burned).

He was a beloved musician and cultural/social figure in New Orleans for nearly 90 years, (and also a great friend of my husband's). When he died about 5 years ago he was embalmed and for viewing in the funeral home he was posed in his classic pose of standing up holding his walking stick, leaning slightly back so as to see and engage with everything around him. The viewing was closed to the public and pictures were forbidden, but someone sneaked one out and it was seriously, seriously spooky. He didn't look dead at all.

A small point ...in modern times lye is normally taken to be sodium hydroxide (aka: caustic soda) .
Potassium hydroxide (aka: caustic potash) was the lye of long ago, being made by leaching wood ashes .
Today both are known as "lye" and are used commonly in soap making (saponification of fats and oils) . The main difference being that sodium hydroxide makes a hard soap that is a bit harsh while potassium hydroxide makes a "soft soap" that is more gentle than a hard soap .
And there is yet another use for a body ... saponify the fats, oils and sundry lipids into a soft soap and place in dispensers for placement in bathrooms and kitchens .
While it may seem gross to others, having worms and bugs crawling on your decaying body, I think a non-casket burial would fit me just fine. I was born from the earth, so I die in the earth. I think it's a fitting conclusion to my life :)
