I used to think that waking up from a nightmare by sitting straight upright was something that only happened in films. Then I had an extremely vivid nightmare about being beaten to death and I did the exact cliched sitting bolt upright, gasp and all, before I was fully awake.

As it turns out, the kidnapper in "Night Killer" was actually the lady's husband (can't remember if it was ex or current), who she completely forgot about due to the trauma from being assaulted. Which then makes the story dumber, because the police and the husband agreed that in order to get her memories back they would have the husband do all those awful things to her. That's somehow even worse than if it was random maniac.

The weird thing with Night Killer is that Axel is revealed to be a police detective, and his whole psycho kidnapper persona was an act to get the main girl away from the real killer and to bring back her memory, since she's an amnesiac mental patient. They frame the whole thing as having been planned out by Axel and her therapist as a way to use trauma to bring back her memories. It's still really objectionable and doesn't make any sense, but I guess the *intent* was he was an actually good guy.

One thing rarely mentioned is that the greaser Driller Killer from Slumber Party Massacre 2 is Atanas Ilitch, scion of a famous Detroit family that owned Little Caesars and the Detroit Red Wings. He wanted to be a singer and a dancer, and recorded at least one album in the 80s. Last I heard he owns his own recording studio. He apparently got cast immediately after his audition.

The level of narrative mastery involved in stringing together this timeline of rip-offs puts the directors of most of them to shame. This series is beyond genius, taking the least objectionable parts of each film and injecting them with much greater significance by putting the "borrowings" in context before verbally demolishing the experience with just the right amount of bitterness at having to have sat through each one. I'm still working out which part I'm more impressed by: the fact that someone actually watched all of these or how eminently watchable the results are?

Hell yeah! This is my favorite series on this channel. I don't know if these came from the book itself, but mind doing one on the Dollars Trilogy? The Man With No Name movies had few rip offs but the Django movies (inspired by the trilogy and Yojimbo) had many spaghetti western movies re-titled as a Django sequel, others are unofficial Django sequels that has the protagonist named Django but has nothing to do with the original, some official movies had Django in the title but it has nothing to do with the original itself. And oh yeah, there's also one with where Django and Sartana (another victim of the unofficial series curse and also just a quick introduction to his series. They're just a James Bond-ish character in a western setting, the Gianni Garko ones are the only official ones btw). Anyways... Have a nice day!

I'd like to give a shout-out to two NOES clones which weren't mentioned: _The Sleeping Car_ (1990), written by Greg ( _Tuff Turf_ ) O'Neill and directed by Douglas ( _The Curious Case of the Campus Corpse_ ) Curtis, starring David ( _An American Werewolf in London_ ) Naughton, Judi ( _Weird Science_ ) Aronson and Kevin ( _Twilight Zone: The Movie_ ) McCarthy. The second is _Popcorn_ (1991), written by Mitchell Smith and Alan ( _Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things_ ) Ormsby and directed by Ormsby with Mark ( _Porky's_ ) Herrier, starring Jill ( _The Stepfather_ ) Schoelen, Dee ( _The Howling_ ) Wallace, Malcolm ( _Christine_ ) Danare, Kelly Jo ( _The People Under the Stairs_ ) Minter and Tom ( _Parasite_ ) Villard.
In _The Sleeping Car,_ a journalism student (Naughton) rents an abandoned train car from an old widow and somehow wakes up her deformed husband, the ghost of a railroad engineer who turned mass murderer after being blamed for a train wreck which wasn’t his fault. While some, not all, of the jokes land in this horror-comedy, it's still worth a watch.
In _Popcorn,_ a group of film students put on a festival of old, "gimmicky" horror films at a local refurbished theater. But during the event, the students start getting picked off, one by one. Could it be that the deranged _auteur_ filmmaker who supposedly burned to death _in that very theater_ almost 20 years ago has returned to wreak vengeance? This movie seems to be a spiritual predecessor to _Scream,_ and it's a wild ride! Find it.
Well, that's all for now. Pleasant screams.

Might be able to clear up a couple of things re:Ozzy in trick or treat and the popularity of Shocker.
I was a teenage metalhead in the 80s and as such a regular reader of Kerrang/ Metal hammer magazine. One of them, more likely Kerrang, did a few promotional features on Trick or treat in particular, for obvious reasons and I seem to remember a competition to win the soundtrack album all of which was music by the band Fastway, featuring classic Motörhead guitarist ‘fast’ Eddie Clarke. Much fuss was made about our dark leader Ozzy appearing in the movie. This was the height of the PMRC debacle when Oz wasn’t quite the tv friendly clown he is now, his appearance alone was enough for every metalhead in the country to want to see the film.
Similar case with Shocker being that it had a soundtrack album featuring all new tracks by metal bands. I guess that meant the record companies wanted their cut and had a vested interest in the making sure the films were successful. Knowing that metalheads are voracious collectors and extremely loyal to their genre it must have been a no brainier, I would imagine who’s ever idea it was to market direct to the that fanbase got a big raise.

You just blew my mind with The Horror Show. I remember catching like 30 seconds of it on tv back in the early 2000’s and it stuck with me lmao. He cleaved off a kids head and threw it at someone and that prompted my kid self to change the channel

My favourite Nightmare on Elm street story is Englund received a letter from a mother saying her son had show the movie to his younger sister who was terrified and refusing to sleep. Englund had them flown out to Hollywood took them to the studio and had the girl sit with him as he had the makeup and costume put on so she knew it was all make believe.

    • @TheBadMovieBible
      @TheBadMovieBible  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks, and yes, I think you're right about the 16mm. I nearly lost the line about it being shot on video as I couldn't confirm it, and of course so much of the material looks like 16mm. But then a lot of it looks like high end video too, there are definitely video-only colours going on at some points. I started wondering whether they had some shit-hot betacam camera or something... or maybe it was shot on 16 and edited/FXed on tape...? Either way I think I got that one wrong.

@@TheBadMovieBible I think they explain on the Vinegar Syndrome disc. Shot in 16mm and originally edited on video, so where they couldn’t find the original negs they spliced in from the old video master. It’s an easy mistake to make

Wonderful stuff, I had no awareness of Stones of Death, as an Australian a lot of Australian cinema passes you by. I always thought there was a great space for using indigenous myths and legends in a horror setting, glad to see it's actually happened even if it was a bit ham fisted.

The amount of research involved in finding and reviewing these gems must be enormous. Thank you!
Also! I'm looking for a movie from the 80s I saw as a kid. All I can remember is a scene in which a group of kids think there's an intruder in their house at night. They sneak around in the dark and they all have weapons except for the youngest kid who has an inflatable baseball bat. Hopefully you or some other movie lover knows it!

Great video. I hated Slumber Party Massacre II when it came out but I didn't think of it as a nightmare ripoff. Maybe I should give it another try. Cool to see The Horror Show mentioned it's under rated. Whole time I watched this video, in the right hand side of the screen was a ad to rent New Nightmare. TH-cam you so silly. I do like that one too.
