    The Z 70-200/2.8 + 2X TC is a great combo. I expect the 400/4.5 to be a little sharper, and the 2/3 stop is important.
    But the key thing to consider is you can’t stack TCs. With the 400/4.5 you also can have a 560/6.3 and an 800/9.
    That’s a huge reason to pick up the 400/4.5.

    I have both and happy with both. The advantage of having the 400 mm is now you have reach up to 800 mm.

      Muggy overcast days are quite challenging for the TC @800mm f9…but mostly been good for me as well. Thanks for the feedback!

    I have the combo and this is the first time that I can really appreciate a TC 2x on a 70-200/2.8 Nikon in my life. I'm very satisfied. It's all so compact and the 70-200 focus ring is sooo familiar to me.

      With the Z9 and Z7ii, I have the flexibility of using either/or/both at one time. You’re right…the versatility of the 70-200mm and 2x is sufficient with very minimal to no loss of quality at that price point. Thanks for your feedback! I hope to get back to more videos soon!

    I found my photos to be too soft with the 70-200mm Z with the 2.0, but I will give it another a shot and see what I get.Thanks for the information and video.

    • @casualphotoholic
      @casualphotoholic  ปีที่แล้ว

      In a far stretch…absolutely! I also found while trying to shoot at extended reaches the photos were soft. If you’re shooting subjects under 100 yards typically the detail was tack sharp! I like to have the versatility of the 70 to 200 mm with the teleconverter… But mostly find myself using the 400mm.

    as someone with a limited budget, this video helps me immensely, to be honest even the 1.4TC I believe I would have a good Combo with a z6ii. I use my z6ii with a 200-500 F mount, currently and while I honest do love this combo, it can get a little heavy to carry around that big ol lens. I believe a 70-200 2.8 is a better option than a 100-400 Z 5.6. I can get fast aperture without TC and even with a 1.4TC I can get a f4. in my head it would compare to a 300 PF f mount lens I imagine. but your video has me thinking about the 2.0TC as well. again thanks for the excellent video!

    I bought the megadap sony to nikon z converter and the sony 200-600 and havnt looked back! , works flawlessly and zero light loss . I've had teleconverters in the past and was never happy with the results

    • @casualphotoholic
      @casualphotoholic  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree there is a fine balance when using the TC’s. I have found that as long as I’m not over stretching the distance of shooting…I mostly get sharp images. I am patiently awaiting the Nikon 200-600mm and to see what they do with it. The 600mm f4 is looking really tasty…but $16,000! Might have to sell feet 🦶 pics to afford that! 😅

    I'd love to get my hands on a 70-200 though I'm still waiting on the hopeful Z8 for the mirrorless move. Until then I'm super satisfied with my 500mm pf because it's still amazing on my D850.
    That being said I may get the 70-200 E for a better price now as the D850 stays after going mirrorless for a second body.

    waht you shot at site was a cormorant, had a short tail, while Darters/Ahinga has a long tail. Secondly the length of the neck as seen at site was much smaller as compared to an Ahinga.

    Even though the 70-200 performs great with the 2x TC in terms of image quality it lags behind the 400mm F4.5 for sure. You can find detailed comparisons online with a clear advantage for the prime (no wonder).
    If you are shooting mostly wildlife the 70-200 will be useless anyways since the focal length is way on the short side.
    Nevertheless, great stuff.

      The 400 has been an absolute joy to shoot and walk around with! You will not be disappointed! But I keep the 70-200mm with the TC handy for those days I need a variable shorter work area.

    Timely video for me…I was getting ready to order the new 400, 4.5 but already own the 70-200 with the 2x tele. I took it on a trip to Yellowstone last winter and took lots of sharp photos. It was just a little short for some of the wildlife there. Will be interested to see what you think of the new lens.

      Spot on Teri! I’ve noticed as well that the 70-200mm w/2.0xTC hits soft details at longer distances. I love the 400mm! So many videos I wanna make…Just need to focus on one at a time….LOL! Thanks for the feedback and have an Awesome Week!

    I have the 70-200 + 2x TC as that is easier to carry than both lenses and a bit more money saved for that 85 1.2.
    On a side note, I set the aperture ring to adjust ISO (because not all lenses have the third ring). I suppose once I get to that point, I can make the front dial ISO and the aperture ring aperture.
    Either way, it allows for easy and rapid changing of ISO.

    The 70-200mm Z lens is fantastic even with a TC.
    For versatility the 70-200 is a better choice than the 100-400mm.
    For me the 400mm f4.5 with the option of a TC is better for wildlife...🦘

      It's the less expensive route to combine a 70-200 with a TC if you have that lens already......but less convenient than having 100-400 without needing a teleconverter (no need to expose the sensor and have to decide TC or not). I've tested the combination vs the 100-400 and there's no comparison outside the very center of the frame. The 100-400 is very, very good throughout the frame but the 70-200 + TC 2.0 is softer outside the center. For wildlife, I couldn't disagree with the TC option if AF works well (I haven't tested), but if you're looking for this range for landscapes, the 100-400 is the way to go without a doubt. The 100-400 has a very good min focus distance which is great for near-macros.....very versatile lens. For wildlife, I can see the value of the 400mm f4.5 + TC1.4......I don't have them but there's lots of very good images out there with this combo. The 100-400 is no slouch either....just a tad short in the focal range.
