A man that buy rotten groceries isn't fulfilling the "basic responsibilities". And do you really believe the way he acted with the car seller is normal? Is the way he talked to his wife about "keep her nose out of his wallet" acceptable?
And yes, control all the money and doesn't let the wife to have any access to it is abuse. This was causing a lot of harm to her, she let this very clear at beginning.
If this man hired a maid to do exactly what his wife does, he would go bankrupt. With her, he saves a lot of money and can focus on his job and career because needn't to worry about house chores(believe me, it spends a lot of time and physical and mental energy). She take care of the house and him(the big baby) as well, but receive only roof over head and rotten food as payment. Would you be happy if someone took care of you that way?
