I met Hubert Sumlin in 2005 and spent 30 minutes talking 1:1 with him. Nicest, kindest, most descent person on the planet..... I am not overly religious, but may God bless Hubert Sumlin.
i saw him play live a couple years ago, along with Buddy Guy, Chris Layton, and Mitch Mitchell about a month before he died. that was the 'experience hendrix' tour. That was an concert i will never, ever ever forget.
I love it how his playing is pure instinct. It keeps it dirty, just plays by heart, doesn't care to impress with "skills", He just let the music get out of him. This is guitar playing. And after all these years, you can still feel his enthusiasm and see him smiling like a kid as he plays. Brilliant
I can relate....after listening to him for years and finally putting things together regarding just who and what he is/was, I came to the conclusion that he was in fact...THE MAN....I went to Chicago to meet him. He was a wonderful human being. I later went to see him again at the Namm show and he was just as gracious as ever..I sensed a great lose when he passed...a "Disturbance in the Force" if you will.....There will only be one Hubert Sumlin...a GIant amongst Guitar Players............
RIP!! Very sad to hear the news. I first came across Hubert Sumlin a while back when looking up another old bluesman who had died. At least we still have the music, a part of them that lives on forever.
I just found this guy today, researching how to improvise and solo ... sad to know the same day i discover a legend, that he passes away! RIP Hubert, i hardly knew ye!
I love Hubert Sumlin. He played on all my favorite Wolf records. I'm 19 now and when I first heard him it hooked me. The Wolf's voice is indomitable but Hubert added that character to it in my opinion.
What a great positive attitude. Wolf made him learn to play without a pick for a smoother sound. I could hang out with this cat and enjoy every minute. This man has never received proper recognition for his contribution to music. I hope to meet him someday so we can just sit and visit for a spell.
everyone needs to hear the howlin wolf 2 disc set thats black and green...changed my life on guitar. dont know why more young blues guitarist havnt heard of this guy!
Man you gotta love Hubert! I'm learning the blues just from his body language! I wonder what he was like in his 20s! My grandpa had the same attitude and lived to 91.
I have seen this guy and thought at times he was a bit boring. . then I have seen him and he has blown me away with some of stuff he can do. A true great amongst the guitar world.
@tomitstube This is pure blues history, can't find anything more authentic than this these days, such guitar talent, hope i live long enough to learn to play like this!
in the 60's, at the London sessions for Howlin Wolf, Clapton arriveed, stayed 10 minutes, and was on his way out the door. someone asked, where ya goin, and e.c. replied, you don't need me, you got Sumlin here.
man, what he says at 2:45 is the most important advice for instrumentalists. BE THE BEST AT WHAT YOU WANT TO BE!! YOU CAN BE THE BEST YOU, NOT THE BEST JIMI HENDRIX
I met Hubert Sumlin in 2005 and spent 30 minutes talking 1:1 with him. Nicest, kindest, most descent person on the planet..... I am not overly religious, but may God bless Hubert Sumlin.
Such a happy and forthcoming man. What a treasure.

Hubert's personality always makes me happy. His optimism is infectious, and he must be the sweetest soul in the entire music business.

I can relate....after listening to him for years and finally putting things together regarding just who and what he is/was, I came to the conclusion that he was in fact...THE MAN....I went to Chicago to meet him. What Hubert plays can't be taught......expression of his soul.

these old cats always look sharp, even to just go to the market.
It's almost essential to listen to hubert if you want to learn blues guitar.
R.I.P. Hubert.
What I wouldn't give to shake this man's hand for all the mean stuff he did with Howlin Wolf
RIP Hubert
It's all in the fingers man
@drcarico
Exactly! Just play the guitar! I hope I'm as happy as Hubert at his age. : )
RIP.
Does anybody know how to get that dead-strings sound Hubert gets?
R.I.P.
he is so damn CUTE!
seein him at antones on the 14th
I wanna party with THAT guy =]
Just starting to play some blues is this tab available? Want to verify how well I broke down some of these riffs.
See you tonight sir!
Try palm muting, pressing the palm of your picking hand against the strings, just above the bridge, to dead 'em out then pick hard.
can someone tell me what type of Gibson Les Paul he is using? standard or traditional?
Even though an iPhone speaker that is a great blues tone. I didn’t used to appreciate it like I do now.
R.I.P
does anybody know which issue of guitar one this is from?
yessir
his style is somehow jagged, sharp, soft, chunky, and fragile.
Man, he treats that les paul right
Hubert isn't dead he just went home
