- Episode 389 - Sometimes a game franchise will just kind of fizzle out only to get reintroduced tot he gaming audience, often being reinvented in the process. This doesn't always work out well, but other times it proves to be way more successful than the series was originally.

What are some franchises that were resurrected that did it right? Or how about wrong?
I don't know if you've mentioned on the first episode, but around the same time of SoR4 there had been released Battletoads as well.
And very recently a new Double Dragon game (which got a totally new pixel graphic visual and I haven't played)
Double Dragon Neon was ok though the main enemy was extremely annoying and not funny (they were going for funny and failed)
Double Dragon 4 however was great.
Also, Getsu Fuma Den: Undying Moon.
Ace Combat. Every games in this series added and improved lots of features plot and gameplay wise. However, it crashed with Assault Horizon which is the worst in the series. The series wouldn't see a proper sequel until 8 years later.
DKC Returns did it wrong
30:40 you must play contra 4 for Nintendo DS by wayfordward
Shenmue really had an atmosphere and feel to it that no other game ever before it or since has had. I still hold it dear to my heart.
Couldn't have said it better myself. They were special games, made with real love
When Shenmue III was announced, I thought how cool it would be if they kept the Dreamcast visuals as an option, many remakes and modernized games have this option, sometimes being changeable in real time, such as the upcoming Tomb Raider classic trilogy, Quake and others, it would at least make a good impression for fans who were waiting for the sequel to show up in its own era.
I think Yuu Suzuki himself expressed both original Shenmue games had something else to them, some sort of extra touch of inspiration and desire, this is not something easy to transfer over, depending on the context and the time something is being worked on, it lost its lust back then when the Dreamcast fell, had the franchise waited until the Xbox was released to be originally launched there as an exclusive, while this won't sound good for the Dreamcast fans, at least the chances it would be a trilogy at that time would be higher, maybe it would actually have a decent conclusion too.
Big issue with Shenmue 3 is that it feels outdated compared to Yakuza series which is not only pretty much refined take on Shenmue but better games.
Agreed, amazing games the first two especially.
The first Shenmue games needed to be played near their release era to fully appreciate how amazing an experience they were. The inclusion of collectables and arcade games along with the storyline and occasional fully interactive fight sequences was a perfect combination imo. Detail in the games was astounding bitd. ✌️😎
I can see your buying that bs
That was by far you best end skit. Hilarious!
Joe's done this sort of skit before, but this one is the longest by far and because it's Shenmue it kind of works better with the whole gag lol
32:05
😂 sensational
The joke's on him. He needs the radio buddies.
Just watch the episode where he reviewed Rock Man & Bass. He gave up on the first boss in the intro level as Bass because he didn't think to try aiming diagonally since there was no radio buddy to tell him what to do.
Radio Buddy ending is pretty funny.
Well i was expecting that if the player didn’t follow those instruction from that radio buddy, that he would eventually got punnished from square one,in such case i would,ve laved my ass off,but it was a nice attempting joke from game sack anyway🤣
This might be my all-time favorite post-credits skit.
Loved that ending skit with the radio companion throwback 🤣
Every game should have two extra modes: Radio Buddy mode and Craig Stadler mode.
See if you can get yours inside of mine!
Developers?
“Is the pressure starting to get to you?”
*Shenmue: Craig Stadler Edition*
"Think you can get the sailors inside mine?"
The timing of this upload is perfect. I listen to these videos going to bed and usually get the first half then I’ll watch the whole thing tomorrow
Lol I definitely think they know that probably half their viewers are people trying to fall asleep to there sweet, soft, sultry voice.
that 2014 strider I LOVED I beat it several times my son loved it as well he started to want to play it so I have a special connection with it
I'm so glad you and your son had a great time with it!
@@tonybarnes2920 thank you
This was a great episode, and the Radio Buddy end skit was your best yet. It left me in hysterics! 🤣
Tomb Raider was released on Saturn before PS1. The American release came later.
True, if only by a month. It is also the worst version so there's that too.
Can’t wait for this channel to reach 1mil. They truly deserve it.
Only Joe
1 mil??
Bloody Roar and Earthworm Jim should be brought back
EWJ is a bit controversial
Bloody Roar would be so awesome. I’ll even take a compilation.
@@IDHLEB Nothing wrong with Jim himself, its his creator that's controversial.
I am sure there was supposed to be a EWJ game for the Amico.
@@brendanroberts1310 That game had been cancelled. Interplay is "pursuing other opportunities for Jim" according to X/Twitter
How about a Game Sack 2? We are waiting for a sequel in 3D this time
3D? Nah, Game Sack needs an HD Remaster. It needs to stay 2D to stay true to form.
@@BabusGameRoom maybe 2,5D?
ToeJam & Earl III is a must-own if you have an OG Xbox. You can collect vinyl records and listen to them on their own, and it's just a great game overall. Happy to see Game Sack show it some love, it's a hidden gem imo.
Sega went all out on the 6th generation and got no love for all their hard work. Now all we get is 3 Sonic games for year and a Like a Dragon/Yakuza if we're lucky.
Loved the ending skit 🤣
Nothing beats watching Game Sack from Japan after a long day of retro shopping!
Best skit ever! Love the subtle Cybermorph reference!
Thank god for this channel. It really gets me through these long night shifts where I'm stuck in my office all alone for 9 hours a night.
Get back to work Craig!
Game Sack is always a Saturday night treat.
Or Sunday morning in the UK 😉

So glad I watched the full video. Comedy genius.
Another radio buddy skit, paired with Shenmue. One of the best skits ever! Plus it's a nice little easter egg for long time channel watchers who also share your frustration with 'radio buddy' tropes in games. 😁
Hard Corps Uprising is so good. I was obsessed with it when it originally released
Great video, as always.
However Tomb Raider wasn't released on the PS1 first. The first release of the game was on October 25th 1996 in Europe on Saturn. I know you're American (nothing wrong with that) and it's a show primarily for US audience, but it's a fact that the game was first released on Saturn.
Core design was primarily a Sega developer especially for the Sega cd but when the saturn flopped they switch to PlayStation.
That’s true for a person who cares about international releases, but for me, I only care about their North American releases, which applies to the USA, Mexican, and Canadian releases, not just for video game releases, but also television broadcast premieres and theatrical film releases.
"he probably sucks at revenging" I love the radio buddy stinger at the end. I love your hatred of radio buddies 😂 😂
The radio tutorial bit reminded me of the beginning of Borderlands 2 where they mock other game tutorials.
"Wow, nice job! Your ability to walk short distances without killing yourself will surely be Handsome Jack's downfall!"
Man that end skit is gold
The after credits scene never disappoint me 😂😂😂
Joe, you're looking especially dapper as of late. Good on you, brotherman. And thanks for another Game Sack; there are fewer things I love more on TH-cam than seeing a new episode drop.
Most people understand that the Yakuza series are the actual shenmue series you want.
The second I saw the Shenmue title pop up after the credits I was immediately hoping for Shenmue Radio Buddy! So happy!
That was without a doubt the best end skit yet. Well done good sir.
"Ham on the radio buddy..." 10 out of 10. Would joke again.
There's something about Game Sack videos that are very calming..
The 1st Game Sack video for November. Interesting topic too.
Awesome, Joe once again knocking it out of the park. Thanks for all your efforts in continuing to create content for the channel. You are the best.
So there is actually a third Toe Jam & Earl game on the Genesis/Megadrive of sorts. If you somehow owned a Menacer (light gun), it came bundled with a bunch of mini games including Ready Aim Tomatoes starring our favourite funk-o-tron duo. Somehow that wasn't enough to keep the franchise going...
Don't forget about their cameo appearance in the cult classic game Wacky Worlds. That _definitely_ helped keep them alive.
He covered it literally in episode 1
Oh... I think that no one needs a new resurrection. Every time they get something back, the corpse is more rotten than before.
I never expected Ryo's father to be played by Richard Nixon.
Tomb raider appeared on Saturn first in the EU 25th October while US was Nov 14th 1996
Strider on the Genesis was life changing for me. I bought it after renting it a few times and the price dropped after a while. I remember seeing it for $89.99 when it was first released and I was sad because I couldn't afford it. Back then you had to pay through the nose for 8 MEGA POWERRRRR!!
That's really interesting to me because I think I had exactly the opposite reaction to it! I liked more adventurous, exploratory games when I was young and was able to accept the supremely janky NES version mostly due to my (and it's) age. When I got a Genesis and rented Strider, I was ignorant of thr arcade game, had no idea the NES one was a Rygar situation, hated it because it was "just and action game", and because of it, began to see the Genesis as inferior because it didn't have alot of the more puzzley games I liked in early childhood. It's really interesting to me how differently older gamers experienced the early days.
IMHO the main sprite looks alot better on the Megadrive/Genesis version.
Strider was one of the first 3 games I got with my megadrive.
The other 2 were super shinobi and golden axe. Good times
Every time I have trouble getting to sleep, I boot up some Shemnue on my PS4 and I'm fast asleep within minutes. Always works, thanks SEGA!
Always love a good game sack episode
Every gamesack episode is a good episode

Going ham with the radio buddy
You mean a ham radio buddy?
I'll see myself out.
Shenmue III is a hilarious situation to me. People begged for it for years, then when it finally came out a lot of people said "this is garbage!" even though it's literally exactly like Shenmue I and II. It feels like a lot of modern gamers can't wrap their head around a game that doesn't play exactly like every other cookie cutter, soulless triple A action game/shooter that comes out these days, and call anything that's different than what they're used to crap.
Personally I really enjoyed the game. I played Shenmue I, II, and III all for the first time back to back and I thought III was excellent. I'm really looking forward to Shenmue IV!
Best post episode skit so far.
🤣 I love the bit at the end with the radio buddy! Also that the characters just flat out waste your time; you could do this for Hotel Dusk on the DS, as well.
Yes if they create an Oscar for BEST INVENTED RADIO BUDDY SCENE you've got it in the bag 😅 awesome vid n skit! Long Live Contra!!! ❤
Okay, let's all give special attention to "Where did you learn to throw?" delivered exactly like the "Radio Buddy" in Cybermorph. That is a deep cut in an already deep cut.
Shenmue 4 is actually in early stages of production. Word is that it's going to be a prequel about Iwao, Ryo's dad.
IIRC the producer wanted the series to be 5 games long, yeah no thanks.
*Throws aside Shenmue 3 online installer disc*
*Loads Yakuza or Ghost of Tsushima*
Ahh... Much better...
I'm excited for it, but I'm not prepared to wait another 20 years
@@DeAthWaGer Neither Yakuza or Ghost of Sushitime are anything like Shenmue at all. lol
Also, the original plan was 15 games, so 5 would be nice.
@@Tylerson k have fun throwing down another $60 for maybe 1/3 of a game, I'm over it. I don't need wooden actors and a fighting system that is dumbed-down Virtual Fighter 3.
@@DeAthWaGer Wooden acting is basically a staple of the franchise.
Game Sack is why I stay up late on Saturday nights.
best outro skit in recent memory, chuckled sensibly
For Contra you missed Shattered Soldier. Shattered Soldier is awesome!
Plus he talks about the new one without mentioning Neo Contra, which was the best one in that overhead style with lots of 'tude!!!
And didnt mention hard corps which is better than 3
Omg, post credit skit is S Tier.
That hard corps (not named Contra"!) game looks really nice!
It really is. It's a shame they never made a sequel to it.
Dude definitely, I'd recommend everybody play it immediately
@@superstimulatedminotaur3681 I just purchased it based on this video!
You cover Contra but I really wish you mentioned Contra 4 of the DS, it's the best Contra even beats the original. It cracks me up that a Sega Genesis guy like you didn't mention Hard Corps.
Hard Corps is a spin-off
@@IDHLEB Hard Corps is a real Contra game and one I reviewed very, very highly in the past. It's excellent.
Lan Di could never throw darts like THAT!!! Great closer, Mr. Sack!
Joel you would have made a great South Park voice actor. That what your skit made me think of. 🤣😂
The ending skit is a masterpiece 😆
I am avenged! 😂that was great. Shenmue and radio chatter is peak Game Sack
Love that Toe Jam and Earl slap bass
Don't forget Contra 4 on the DS, it's probably the best Contra game since the SNES / Mega Drive releases.
11:29 We used to always say he was saying “Grab The Paw!” 😂😂😂
FYI the thick black outlines on mobile games are so that it's easier to figure out what's what on a tiny screen in less-than-ideal lighting conditions.
I about lost it at the radio buddy Shenmue!!
nothing like a good sack in the wee hours of sunday morning
I'm really mad that Yu Suzuki blew his chance to give Shenmue an ending. That's all I want at this point, an ending. Just have Lan Di crushed by Toejam & Earl's spaceship or something.
Thanks to them attempting to scam their backers, they poisoned the well for crowdfunding and if they try to use it for another game they probably won't ever hit their goal.
Yu Suzuki had the entire series planned out back with the original game, so I respect him for actually sticking to his vision and not just rushing an ending because people wanted it.
Killing Lan Di was never meant to be the goal of the series. Ryo was told multiple times how revenge is the wrong path. Suzuki even confirmed that he will let go of his revenge over the span of the whole saga.
@@ico128 Didn't Suzuki show that Ryo was going to kill "Randi" (sic) when he laid out the overall plot in the '90s? This wouldn't have been the end of the saga, though.
Of course, it could have changed since then.
Im here to complaint about shenmue just because ive never played them, also to complete the quota of people doing it, and finally because Ive always been fascinated by such a weird game
Bought the collection and I'm like the controls suck bad but I keep wanting to see what else their is. It sounds fun and I just found the Saturn but I still don't know what to do.
Thanks for this. Will check out part 1 now.
"Where did you learn to throw" easter egg was awesome at the end. Well-done!
Another Sunday, another Game Shack. John is the man!
@UnjustifiedRecs you think you know about Gameshack and you don't know who John is? 😂
@UnjustifiedRecs Don't try to worm your way out of this one. Lol, everybody knows John at Gameshack.
@UnjustifiedRecs I have no idea who John is to be honest.
John Blueifer from Game Shack.
@@lasersnake who?
Haven’t heard Joe complain like this for a while… this could double as one of the pet peeves episodes
One thing that holds SOR4 back is the sound design. The devs I think didn't quite understand just how important the sound effects are in a beat em up, namely the sounds of your attacks landing. The loud PSSSH! sounds in SOR1 and 2 REALLY made the combat feel satisfying as you could almost feel each impact.
The impacts of your moves sound & feel a bit wimpier in SOR4 & that's a shame. It's one of the things that goes a long way to making sure you don't get bored while playing.
Hahaha omg that must be your best ending skit ever
The skit you've done in this video is great! I was surprised with how long it was. Good job, Joe!
lol that end cut scene was perfect.

Also, I loved the PS4 in the trash then out of the trash skit. I think it was brilliant!
This video has the best thumbnail in Game Sack history
Yo Joe, just wanted to say that I still haven't skipped your intro. Been years, I'm like the Cal Ripken Jr. of not intro skipping.
Joe’s sack is the sack that keeps on giving!
That ending omg had me, such an interesting crossover like peanutbutter and bacon sandwhich!
A large P.B.& B. sandwich ?? After that you can say that you just consumed every calorie in your diet for the entire week. In less than 7 bites !! Must be a new record.......Wait.......you need some Crisco shortening on it too.
In defence of the black lines, it is the classic cartoon look. They might be a little a thick, but it works for Johnny Bravo.
Hey, in NES Strider's defense, it was really interesting and unique when it was brand new, at least to me. Not many sides scrollers at that time were structured in a non-linear fashion and focused more on exploration than action. Plus, the anime art, which we barely even had a reference for at the time, somewhat mature themes and focus on story, as slight as they may be even by 16-bit standards, helped it stand out. I remember getting a Genesis a few years later, renting Strider thinking it was going to be a better interpretation of the NES game, and being so disappointed it was "just an action game" that I didn't even try to finish it!
It's so strange how perception is. A lot of people knew Strider from the arcade, and it was an important and impressive port to the Genesis. But plenty of people just knew it as an original game for the NES. Too bad it's so broken and buggy. What's interesting is that Strider was a co-production and there was a comic/manga in Japan which the NES game follows in terms of story. So it's very strange that the NES game never was released in Japan.
@@ravagingwolverine I was maybe 7 years old at the time and there was absolutely no way I could ever have possibly known any of that except that Strider was an arcade game. All that mattered was that it was available for rent at my local rental store and it was featured in Nintendo Power.
Toejam & Earl reminds me of something that'd be in another edition of Tude Sack.
It's an excellent 2 player game. Teamwork & cooperation at it's best !!
2019 - The year of the franchise return
Haha that was one of my favorite ending skits to date!
I have been convinced forever that Tomb Raider was on the Saturn first. Bought a copy alongside fighting vipers on launch which would be 1995!
Both Tomb Raider and Fighting Vipers were released at the end of 1996.
The Tomb Raider re boots are fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 of them.
Man, this final gag made me laugh so much !
You must have already played Shenmue to fully understand.
Oh i was fuckin dying laughing
I loved that post-credits skit!
The Ps2 Contra game doesn't get enough love
Joe I'm so glad you're still doing your thing after all this time. You've definitely earned my respect
That skit at the end really makes me wish there actually was a radio buddy in Shenmue. It seemed like they had some really helpful advice to share!
Sorry Joe, but you got it wrong about Tomb Raider. The original series ended with TR - Angel of Darkness, Legend was the first game of a new storyline which drastically changed Laras background and motivations. In 2013 Tomb Raider they rebooted the series for a second time.
That was a truly great post-credit scene.
Tomb Raider Underworld was already the third entry in the franchise's "first second chance". The franchise ended a first time after Angel of Darkness bombed, then it was reinvented in Tomb Raider Legend, followed by Anniversary and THEN Underworld.
That skit at the end was fantastic
“Streets of Rage 4 looks like a mobile game” is a take I never expected to hear.
I've yet to understand what he even meant.
i definitely thought 'flash game' when i first saw it... it grew on me.
Seems like high resolution assets just get that - it’s the smoothness. If it was classic pixel art you wouldn’t hear it but once the resolution bumps up people start associating it with mobile stuff.
@@danhectic5629 Really? I remember flash games and unless they got really advanced toward the end, flash game was never a thing that popped into mind. It was going for a comic book look, thus the thick line work.
That's a pretty bad take. It's like saying every games that uses pixel graphics are mobile games.
That's also like saying every shmups that have pixel graphics are literal mobile games.
Love the radio buddy stuff. Great video.
I now want an episode showing the full Shenmue saga: radio buddy edition 😂
