Thank you for the turn and the words. My mother left on her final journey this week, It my fervent prayer that she and my dad have met up and are dancing away as they sure did love to dance.together. Green wood is such a treat and very hard to find here. It can give you quite the bath and I do love the pile of shavings. Blessings of the season on your house.
Tara, I'm very sorry for your loss! I pray they both have found peace in the arms of our Savior, and their dance is now one of pure joy! There is peace to be found in making shavings too, and I hope you start turning again soon
Thank you for your kind words. Dad left us 30 years ago, Mom waited very patiently for him and was ready to join him. I pray it is a dance of joy as well and they are also cuddling my daughter as she has been an angel for many years.
I'm not a turner myself, but admire the process and the product very much. Your calm, logical, but passionate, narration makes your work stand out among the others I watch. I get the same feeling when piecing a quilt: the process is more important than the product, though both have great value. It's the process that does it for me- the product will hopefully please others.
I just need to say thank you for so much; your service, your passionate talent, dedication to our country, beautifully designed and crafted work and mostly....for being real. This world needs more people like you, and I haven't met you. I can see it in every video. Every creation and in your voice. Thank you. Your videos bring me joy in a world full of chaos. I'd like to mail you some wood from my yard too.
I'm deeply grateful for such a nice and heartfelt comment, Mary. Joy in a world full of chaos...you've nailed it exactly. Thank you! If you want to send me some wood, please make sure it's bug free, and my PO box is posted in my video descriptions. I promise it will get used in some way, and I appreciate it! Thank you again for your comment!
So exciting can’t wait to get to that video. I’m working my way through your videos, I started with the oldest a few months ago. I’m enjoying them very much.
Oorah! Not a military person myself but deserves to be said in memory of my ancestors now gone. Your effort is commendable and your turnings beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Further, I hope your green apple wood bowl has a good and safe nap.
I so enjoy your videos of instruction but most of all I appreciate your ability to communicate your deep respect and outright love of turning. You put into words what many of us feel. I lie you’re not afraid to let us know your true feelings. Much appreciated.
Thanks again for an awesome video. To see and hear your passion for wood working is amazing. I get ideas from watching you turn. I pray God's blessings and your family. In Jesus name amen
We can truly feel that you love wood, You love turning wood, and by listening to you, the way you speak, the way you share your passion, I now want to learn woodturning! Plus at the end of the video, what a beautiful bowl with gorgeous patterns!
Can't wait to see it in six months. I feel the same way when I do woodworking. I find it very therapeutic. I don't think your bowl will crack because it is so thin. Oh also you videos are therapeutic. Cheers!
what a great and beautiful piece of art Rod.....to think of the tree and what it gave to others in the apples for the pleasure of eating them and now it is still living on and giving all of us the pleasure with the feasting of our eyes on one of God's creation.....it is amazing and i thank God for your talent.....Merry Christmas and God Bless.
Hi Rod, You so accurately describe the feeling I have about my shop. It is escape and stress release, and sometimes a nearly religious feeling when everything comes together and the result is everything you hoped for! Thanks for your videos and you narratives, I love them because they inspire me! Keep turning! Regards Lars
Thank you for saying so Lars, I'm so glad there are so many of us from all over this world that share the same joy, passion, and inner peace through wood turning, and woodwork in general. I want you to know that comments like yours also inspire me. Thank you for that.
Beautiful deep bowl and I agree that turning green wood is a great experience, I have turned a lot of jacaranda and red pepper and it’s a peaceful experience, stay safe. 🦖
My wife and I are so much looking forward to seeing the bowl reappear. BTW, Hope you and your family had a great Christmas, and we all look forward to your 2019 projects. Thanks for keeping us entertained, we love it!
Your commentary about your feelings while in the shop are spot on with mine and very well said. A sharp tool, a spinning piece of wood and the time to enjoy both. And now the anticipation of what will happen between now and June. Doesn't get much better than that. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you and your family.
Mr. Humphrey, Your videos are honestly the best.. I like the projects you do and the way you shoot your videos. Not too much talking just enough. Big thumbs up and Merty Christmas
As always a great job. I like the way you give information on how and what you,re doing, its very helpful to those of that are new to turning. I,ll be looking forward to June . Take care and God bless
Well done, brother. Such a joy and inspiration to watch you on your journey. As an artist and teacher myself, I echo your positive words: it is the process more than it is the product. Thanks for this, RH.
Rod, I do appreciate your passion for the wood you turn. That’s how I feel about the different paints I use in my art. Listening to you describe how you view it is very calming. Never change. I am amazed at how thin you got the bowl. I pray, too, it doesn’t crack. If it does, maybe, do what the Japanese do with cracked and broken pottery. They fill it in with gold or jade and smooth it to its original form. They do this to honor whoever it was that made it in the first place. I can see you doing this, but with resin. God bless you and yours. Merry Christmas!
Thanks very much, Robin! I hope it doesn't crack, but if it does I'll be fixing it...or highlighting it somehow. I like your ideas for it. Merry Christmas and God bless, you are appreciated!
Rod there was so much about that video that I liked. Apple has its own unique beauty. And I agree that turning green wood is so different than a dry piece. Those shavings are amazing. I enjoyed watching yours as much as doing it myself. LIstening to you describe your passion for what you are doing is inspiring. Also when turning a crotch bowl you just never know what you are going to see before you get turning. Lots of surprises. I am just finishing a piece of redwood that had 10 branches coming out of it. I talk about how it is like exploring an area you have never seen before. It so exciting and gratifying to see the beauty emerge right before you eyes. Thank you for your wonderful videos and have a Merry Christmas Gary
So true Gary, and thank you so much! I really appreciate your comment. I can tell you really feel it the way I do! ...and I'll get back to that amazing e-mail soon brother. Merry Christmas!
Woodturning is so relaxing and can be very therapeutic. Going to be a busy Christmas for us. My wife and I sing in our church choir. Well she sings and I play guitar. We are doing the Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. Then we are getting together with the kids and grandkids Christmas Day. Thank you Rod and have a Merry Christmas.
Another great piece nice to watch and I agree that there's nothing better than turning wood. I've alot of cut wood outside that I didn't know what to do with but you've given me an idea now. Have a great Christmas and a happy new year.
I'm not a wood turner, but I feel like I understand what you're saying about the process and the journey. I knit, and I don't really do it for the finished objects, but for the feel of yarn in my fingers.
I agree with you, the peace and quiet after a couple of days at the ambulance office sure helps me forget about things for awhile. A besides the wood don't hit or talk back.
@@RHumphrey Yes sir, I have been one for 39 years, forty years next April. Really and truly the longest job I've ever had. I am also a level below a Paramedic. It's a calling for sure.
So beautiful...I think I have some apple wood that I found by the side of the road...the bark is very much like this piece...can’t wait to turn it! Merry Christmas, you are such an inspiration to me!
Not turned green for ages Was given some freshly felled cherry 3 days ago I was going to store for next year , your video just changed that . Thank you for the inspiration sir
Fresh cherry...sounds like fun! We need to reward ourselves every now and then. I'm sure you're just like me...I find beautiful wood and admire it thinking of the possibilities as I gather it and store it...and then years later finally get back to it... I have walnut logs that have been shelved for going on 12 years....seems crazy... Thank you!!
It’s amazing how big the bowl is when you are done. I always think it will be smaller when seeing the part of the tree. Another beautiful work of art. I love doing my art as well. It is complete escape. ❤️✝️🕊🇺🇸
Fruit woods are great to turn especially green and then being a crotch it’s right there next to heaven in the turning world. Can’t wait til June to see the final piece. Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and your family. 👍🇺🇸
I already know that it can warp or change its form during the drying process. I am not astonished when green wood is so wet. I have read that a tree pumps quite a few thousands of littes/day through its stem and branches. It is like a giant but quiet water pumping station with so much more functions. Bird sanctuary. Giving us coolness and shade in the heat of the summer. Feeding birds and other creatures of nature. But I am kinda worried. I havent seen a fresh video from you in a while although I subscribed and have the bell activated. I hope you are doing well. Please stay healthy Rod. Warm greetings from Germany. And I love to see all your videos since your comments are always so nice and I always learn something from them - although I am not a wood turner. But I love trees. To see the grain and colours is always so nice. My special moment is the finish when the oil or shine juice is put on and the wood seems to spring back to life in all its glory. I also like your poems a lot and you reading them to us.
I love your work and the love you put into your work. It is great to see and so inspiring for me to get off my chair and work with my hands rather than just staring at the computer screen. Thank you and all the best wishes for health and happiness for the new year from Germany 🌷🌻🌷
I'm going to check your channel now to see the follow-up (I hope there is one). I've been turning since July this year (2019) and I've recently acquired some logs from a fallen birch tree. Birch has little or no figure to offer but it is bliss to turn green. I've turned a small natural edge bowl which, so far, is holding out okay and I've turned a goblet, which has distorted delightfully (it appears to be drunk despite never having had any alcohol in it. Clearly, green birch just can't hold its liquor). I didn't know about putting it in a bag with fresh shavings so thank you for that tip. I'll try that. I'm definitely with you on the 'journey/destination' thing. The end result is just a by-product of the experience of creating it... and that's the part that can't be shared. For all its inherant problems, turning green rocks! Love your apple bowl. I'm now off to your channel to see if there's an update yet. Thanks for sharing.
Okay I just bought a WEN-34018 I haven't been on a Lethe sense the 7th grade (1967 wow). Thanks for the inspiration Mr. H (brother) lets see what happens.
If you’re ever in Kentucky, I have 44 acres of woods. Several trees are down because of the last ice storm. You and your wife are welcome anytime. I would love to watch you turn a piece from my farm
Beautiful work Rod. I love turning green wood, it is such a pleasure as you said. I don’t turn enough of it however. Most of my turning is dry wood. The first time I turned a piece of green wood it was a piece of cherry that was about 6” in diameter and I did some spindle work with it. I remember it being such a joy that I just kept turning till I basically had a tooth pick with a large handle lol. Love your videos and your work. Great work again
Thank you, Rod, for another superb video. There can be few greater gifts to a woodturner than an apple tree or indeed any fruit tree. I don't know if you follow Carl Jacobson but a few months ago he received a tip about filling a green bowl with dried rice grains to speed up the drying process. I seem to remember he stirred the grains about once a week and the process worked. The same grains of rice can be used over and over again. Semper Fi, Alan.
Thanks very much, Alan! I do, I'm a subscriber of Carl's from way back and he's had a great influence on me. I did watch some of that process and it seemed very positive. Maybe next time...I have it in my noggin to not open that bag until June now, lol Semper Fi
HI Rod I am quite a novice , but I totally know where you are coming from with you waxing lyrical over those shavings and the wonderful time of tranquility in your shop. I call my workshop THE PLEASURE DOME it really is a great place to unwind and enjoy working with wood. keep the posts you make as I rally enjoy listening to you as well. All the very best Ian
Hay Rod. Great video. Green wood. I like turning it but just have had such bad experiences with the end result. But I’m going to do what you did with the shavings and brown paper bag. Great idea 💡. I was watching the video with my friends father who was just pealing green apples to make apple sauce and he said the shavings of the log looked like the shavings from the apples 🍏. So cool. You’ve taught me a lot since I’ve subscribed and I thank you so much. I have the same feelings that you do when turning I just love it so much!! 👍✌️
Hi Daniel, wow that's such a great comparison, the wood shavings to apple peals...I love that!! My pleasure, and I'm happy you find my videos helpful! Nice chatting via email as well. 😊 I'm glad you feel it!
Love your work, my friend. The workshop is also my solice. Blue water navy, E-1 - O5, '63 -93, Nam in 72. In '68 my two mentors 1st sgt Pennington and gunny Walker. Semper Fi.
Thank you very much Commander! Thank you for your service to our great nation! It's outstanding that you remember their names! They must have been great ones! Semper Fi!
This was exciting to watch because it was green wood. Thanks for showing all of the shavings at the end. Its a nice visual to compliment the job you just did. I also liked the video at .2 speed. Looking forward to your Dec 28th video and let me know if you need any help with your campaign prez...
Thanks brother, I certainly enjoyed it! That slow speed shot gave me a couple ideas to play with...you may see more of that in the future. lol...thank you! That was sure a nice compliment!
Mr Humphrey, you have a great American accent. You should stand for President, everybody throughout the world would listen to you. I'm excited to see how this bowl will turn out in 6 months time. Finding this channel on youtube has been great. Many thanks to you, you've certainly inspired me to start wood turning. Will you be posting a video on Christmas Day? That would really make our Christmas here in Wales. Diolch
@David, Thank you very much, you have no idea how much that means to me, regarding my voice! You're very kind, and I'm humbled, sir. To have inspired gives me great joy, and you're very welcome! I plan to post one more this year, on Friday the 28th. You are the first to know...I'll be turning the last usable wood from that spalted, punky, maple slab.... Thanks again! President R Humphrey 😊
The feel, the sound, the look, and often the smell of green wood is nearly addictive. The bowl *will* warp; that's just an opportunity to do a lot of hand sanding :-) It will most probably crack; that's just an opportunity to repair with bow ties, leather laces, or copper wire stitches... Clyde
the MRS here... showed my dad a video of a pinecone resin pot... he wants to make me one if i send him some pinecones... hes getting a box full of them!!!!! love the nat edge bowls !!!
That should warp real nice. I love green wood. Although that green white oak I turned a few weeks back was like turning rock. Lol. I look forward to seeing the final bowl. Ken

Nicely done Sir, I will keep my fingers crossed for you. What a great idea to store the piece in a bag with the original shavings. 👊👊👊

To see the grain and colours is always so nice. My special moment is the finish when the oil or shine juice is put on and the wood seems to spring back to life in all its glory. I also like your poems a lot and you reading them to us.
Thanks for sharing. Lost a couple of apple trees in a recent ice storm, so I have a smaller crotch in the garage. Now I know what to do with it.
That's how we lost our apple tree a few years ago too. It changed our whole back yard. But...the wood was like a gift!
I love your work and the love you put into your work. It is great to see and so inspiring for me to get off my chair and work with my hands rather than just staring at the computer screen. Thank you and all the best wishes for health and happiness for the new year from Germany 🌷🌻🌷
Thank you very much! I hope you go make something! 😊 And I wish the same for you!!
I can't wait to see it in when it's dry. Your work is always amazing. Merry Christmas, brother.
Thanks Rick! Much appreciated. I hope your Christmas was nice! Semper Fi brother
Wonderful work as always, semper fi
Thanks very much! 😊 Semper Fi
This is really a beautiful piece
Thank you very much!
Can’t wait to see this Christmas green apple bowl next June, ‘19.
- Merry Christmas Rod
Me too! Merry Christmas, Brian!
Very nice. I know it was fun to turn that green wood. I love it also, but rarely get the chance.
Thank you, it sure was fun! I rarely do it as well.
a beautiful bowl 😎👍
Thank you very much!
I am looking forward to you opening the bag next year. I subscribed just so I don't miss it. Beautiful bowl.
Thank you Jason, I sure appreciate that! 😊
Okay I just bought a WEN-34018 I haven't been on a Lethe sense the 7th grade (1967 wow). Thanks for the inspiration Mr. H (brother) lets see what happens.
Love hearing that! Have fun, and I hope you fall in love with the craft like I have! Semper Fi!
Wonderful work as always.
Thanks very much! 😊
If you’re ever in Kentucky, I have 44 acres of woods. Several trees are down because of the last ice storm. You and your wife are welcome anytime. I would love to watch you turn a piece from my farm
Thank you very much, that's such a nice offer! We don't get down there often, but will keep that in mind for sure!
You have a very calming voice. Your kind of like the Bob Ross of wood turning. I really enjoy your videos.
Thank you very much, that's quite a nice compliment! 😊
Looks great. Can't wait to see how it ends up.
You can see it in person brother! Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful.
Thanks very much! 😊
Great work again
haha! I completely understand how that cherry wood became a toothpick! Too funny! Thank you very much!
Rod, beautiful piece, was fun to watch, thanks.
Thank you very much!
Semper Fi,
Alan.
Thanks very much, Alan! I do, I'm a subscriber of Carl's from way back and he's had a great influence on me. I did watch some of that process and it seemed very positive. Maybe next time...I have it in my noggin to not open that bag until June now, lol Semper Fi
Once again rod lovely work
Thank you very much!
All the very best
Ian
Thank you very much , Ian! I'm happy to hear you have the same peace in your shop. All the best to you as well!
Hi Rod, What a beautiful deep bowl. I can't wait to see it in June.
~Kevin
Hi Kevin, Thank you! It'll be interesting.... 🙂
Merry Christmas, Rod! Thank you for your videos!
You're welcome, and thank you, Olga! Merry Christmas!
This is gorgeous
Thanks very much! 😊
I'm gonna need any person in my life to talk about me the way you do wood turning.
Hahahaha

Cool bowl there, Top! Can't wait to see the end result in a few months.
Merry Christmas!
Billy
Thanks Billy! Merry Christmas!
Lil' Green apple wood bowl.. sweet
Thanks very much! 😊
great piece cant wait to see it in June merry Christmas and a happy new year to you and your family god bless
Thanks very much! 😊
Merry Christmas!
I love it!!!
Beautiful wood. Merry Christmas my friend, and may God bless you and your family.
Thank you Patrick, Merry Christmas and God bless!
Too funny, Mrs. O! 😊
Good day marine
another beauty, well done
Thanks very much! 😊
Thank you...enjoyed that clip.
Thanks so much!
Clyde
Clyde, I like the way you think!
the MRS here... showed my dad a video of a pinecone resin pot... he wants to make me one if i send him some pinecones... hes getting a box full of them!!!!! love the nat edge bowls !!!
Nice! That's something I want to do as well. I need to up my resin work, I think... thank you!
Your videos are just great 👍
Thank you, I appreciate that!
That should warp real nice. I love green wood. Although that green white oak I turned a few weeks back was like turning rock. Lol. I look forward to seeing the final bowl.
Ken
I've never turned green oak of any kind, interesting... Thanks Ken
