NO SPOILERS: every character in this series (Varj, Jin, Saul, Will) is incredibly important to the events going forward -- literally not one scene has *not* been setting up future events / foreshadowing things to come. the conversations, the visuals, the character dev, the seemingly "well, what the fuck was that about?" moments all have *massive* relevance in the overall plot or themes. it's fair for viewers to not trust or understand that obviously, but it is absolutely going somewhere and all questions will be answered -- this is not like the show LOST. (the netflix show is moving a bit faster than I'd like, but it seems -- given your own questions and thoughts -- that the bulk of the ideas and themes are still getting through just fine!, which is the entire point of an adaptation)
Just a side note for folks unfamiliar with Asian naming conventions, “Ye” is Wenjie’s surname just as it is the surname of her father and daughter, Ye Zhetai and Vera Ye.
I only mention this because the video refers to most of the other characters like Mike and Vera by their given names while referring to Wenjie as Ye, a name shared by two other characters.
Appreciate the reminder. I've taken to calling her Yeezus.
I completely forgot about the sofons! 😂 Everytime I heard it I thought they were saying "cellphones" and I kept thinking "2 cellphones? what cellphones?" 😂😂😂 good thing I watched this recap!!!
They finished book1 in episode 5. I think it's because there are many more cool ideas and epic scenes in book 2 and 3, they wanted to rush to it in case the audience find season 1 boring. If they did things right, there could be at least 3 seasons based on book 2 and 3.
Book 1 is also very short compared to books 2 and 3. I'm almost done with the first audiobook. It's just 13.5 hrs, whereas books 2 and 3 are 23 and 29 hrs respectively.
@@ChiliJ Thank you for translating that into audiobook time. Pretty sure I'm going to put it on hold from my library now 🙏🏽
Jin's design has a sail, like a little paper boat 😭💔 The choice of song was perfection in that moment 👌🏼
The “Staircase” happens about a hundred pages into Book 3. As mentioned in another comment, all the main plot beats of Book 1 were finished by episode 5. However, the last scene of this season is the last scene of Book 1.
Was I the only one thinking, when Will brought that star , he really brought the san ti fleet . Aren’t they the exact light years away
You're not wrong.
I saw Jin Cheng and Thomas Wade as another aspect of Yin and Yang element in this story
Ying and Yang, yes, but not just regarding science and it's uses, but ying and yang between science and our creative imaginations. The San Ti may be advanced technologically, but they have no grasp of allegory, of metaphor. They have no inner life the way we think of it, but the series reminds us frequently of the stories, fairy tales and jokes we tell one another. So in short, I think D and D are aiming for an overarching theme of 'we'll need both our heads and our hearts to win the war with the San Ti'. The meta narritive of stories and story telling was presant in GoT for a time, so it's obviously something the two Ds like to reflect on in their work. Just a guess though.
The symbolic analysis of Yin and Yang, I Ching, and AI was really insightful and helped me watch at a deeper more nuanced level
I like good character development. BTW, your reviews of these episodes are very entertaining and though provoking. Nicely done.
Some of the stuff they do this season is from the third book. The staircase initiative is from book 3.
Will is such a good person!
I liked the supermarket scenes to show the Terran standard of living is already declining as resources are directed towards planetary defense.
Neither the humans nor the Santi are right or wrong abstractly considered.
Both are motivated by imperatives of self - preservation.
I found a common theme from comments online that in general book readers tend to enjoy ep6-8 better than the first 5 episodes, myself included. I watched episode 7 and 8 a few more times, because the plots are incredibly important to the stories from book 2 and 3. Will Downing in particular may seem to be the less important character in this season because of him lacking invovlement in the main plot, but his storyline is crucial to the book 3 adaptation.
From what I know, some of Season 1 contains elements on the 2nd and 3rd book. Since the books don't follow a linear storyline. So I think what they did is take elements of the 2nd and 3rd book that take place in the present day and throw it into season 1 for the sake of linearity and setting things up.
The first season covered all of the first book, but had elements from books 2 and 3, which both start after the invasion becomes known (known as the Crisis Era). The Saul / Wallfacer storyline is the start of Book 2, and The Will and Jin storyline is the start of Book 3. Wade is also from Book 3, but his character in the earlier episodes is a stand-in for a couple characters in Book 1. The show is trying to make the entire story as linear as they can, so it made sense to change things a bit.
There are two more books in the trilogy and one spin off book. I’m guessing they will do 4-5 seasons total.
Holy shit man this was an amazing episode like kept going up that ending made my spin chill
Can’t wait for episode 7 👀
dropping tomorrow !
Enjoying your videos. You have a great accent. Thanks for doing this.
I'm loving this show💚🇬🇧🌱
Your thoughts on the symbolism in the first 1-30 of this video make perfect sense, I'm guessing you're on the right track to the answer but there's going to be some big revelations as well.
sucks that it will take so many years to get this series done
Unless D+D decide to do what they did with GoT and hastily wrap it up so they can move onto other things!
That Lana Del Rey song got me goosebumps.
great recap as always. I was watching this while working, so probably not giving it enough attention...that said...the Will scene at the end was hard to follow. What is homeboy exactly buying for his (seemingly) unrequited love and why?
there's a company that is selling the rights to stars in space for a lot of money, and the money will go towards planetary defense. but I imagine its kind of like buying stock or real estate in space if we have to leave earth when the aliens get here. but he buys Jin a star to prove his love and let her know he's always gonna be up there looking down
@@jamesdewayne Thanks! make sense. Just rewatched the season. Man, the actor who did Will was superb. So easy to overact that role.. and he just killed it.
For anyone that has read the books, would you recommend me to pick them up after finishing the show? Im on episode 6 right now.
I ask because ive seen some comments about how the show has elements of all 3 books because of the timeline and so on. Are the changes to the source material drastic enough to warrant reading the books? Keep in mind im not a reader so it would really tske alot for me to pick up a book😂 😂
Read the books. Or listen to them on audiobooks, that's what I did
I don't really think there have been any major changes.
More a process of integrating the books (which are pretty disparate) more closely.
I'd say read them.
You get a bit more detail about the real science behind the series.
if it takes san ti's 400 years to get to earth at 1% light speed from where they currently are; wouldn't the probe the human send take roughly half the time (200 years) to reach the san ti's? Since the speed is matched and they would be going directly towards each other..
yep in episode 7 they talk about it, I think they said its exactly 200 years actually
Just a note that the "staircase" was basically the same thing as Project Orion which was a real project that estimated we could get to around 10% of the speed of light. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion)
How are the bombs being placed in time?? 🤔
You will never know what santi looks like
I heard they look kinda like tardigrades. Think it's mentioned in a spinoff that's considered cannon by the author.
I don't understand how they could get the nuclear war heads out in space far enough & precisely enough, for their theory to work?
Me neither, if we can get the bombs as far as the San ti in time for this plan to be implemented do we really need the plan??? I'm so confused haha
whats a probe ?
hate to rain on the parade but if the books go beyond what we see here then 'theories' will just end up being spoilers **guaranteed** whether its someone being a troll or looking for 'clout'
Why do you (and many others) pronounce the word "nuclear", as "nucular"? Honest question.
it's just how I've generally heard it pronounced 🤷♂ kinda like how I say "cran" instead of "cray-on", just engrained into my head I guess lol
Thanks, it's interesting. And big thanks for the 3BP videos, they help a lot.

From chapter 6 on, the series was ruined. As if there was nothing to tell in this season, someone decided that the series should focus on the existential problems of the main characters. Chapter seven, the same, continues with the same tone. This already looks like a love novel for bored housewives. The Chinese series, which is indeed more boring, suddenly seems exciting compared to the western version after this episode.
Btw, nu-cu-lar?? It’s nu-clear. Two syllables.
Here's a few thoughts to ponder. There's an interesting juxtaposition between the nuclear bombs invented for destruction but ultimately used for a good purpose, and the nanofiber technology invented for a good purpose but ultimately used to destroy.
Also, I've heard about another book, an addendum to the book series, I'm not sure it's authored by Liu. But the San-Ti are described as the size of a grain of rice. And this is also an interesting thought that 2 things so small, the San-Ti and the nanofibers, actually 3 if you include Sophons, can be capable of having a huge impact on other things orders of magnitude larger that the causal agents.

Invented for a good purpose but used for something destructive.

Continuing on with the nanofiber theme. In the series was the brought up the fact that Oppenheimer's mistress committed suicide because she knew how destructive the bomb would be and what it meant for humanity. Auggie was very distraught when she discovered the death and destruction caused by her nanofiber technology. I think she was also distraught, knowing that her invention for good purposes could be used by evil humans for evil purposes
