You know I hear alot from Cubans on this site that we have taken there music and made it our own similar to Reggaeton which started in Panama. I think that all boricuas should abandon salsa, merengue, and reggaeton and dabble into Bomba (which has various rhythms unique to each region of the island), plena and musica criollo.

My aunt lives in a suburb in Bayamon where there are a rich array of people in her neighbor ranging from white to black. All good people. My aunt is not from a project on the island. She owns her home because her and her husband worked hard. My grand parents who live in barrio Obrero Arecibo are not from the hood either. So you are sadly mistaken if you think that I am surrounded by uneducated or lower class types.

In Ecuador also there are african ecuadorians who play BOMBA songs , they live in a region called Valle del Chota , they escaped from slavery from the low lands and are living there since 17 century , so , I think their BOMBA is really goob prove of african ancestry . Studies have shown that roughly 60% of the Puerto Ricans on the island possess some Taino ancestry through the maternal side. The same study also shows that roughly 30% of Puerto Ricans on the island have a female sub Saharan ancestor and 20% have a male sub Saharan African ancestor.
Even the spanish spoken in Puerto Rico is far from Castillian you cant even deny that. The spanish language spoken in PR has phrases and words from the Taino that were almost decimated and the West Africans brought to the Island as slaves. Taino: Huracan, Hamaca, Bohio, Batey, Yuca. African: Bochinche, Gandinga, Mofongo, Modongo, and Fulano. Oh cant forget the influence from the Canary Islands to.

My estimate is that about half of the population possesses some type of African ancestor from maternal or paternal lines. I can't confirm this though but from observing of my own family and the fact that I have seen a lot of Boricuas with distinct African features I think that estimate may be correct. Keep in mind there is still a very strong indigenous presence in the Puerto Rican gene pool.

If you must know my geograpic location here it goes I currently live in downtown Jersey City aproximately 5 minutes outside of downtown Manhattan. The area i live in is referred to as Wall Street West. There are a large amount of young urban professionals out here due to the 9-11 terrorist attacks so property value is twice as high than average. I dont know if you know this but property taxes have gone up 30% in NJ since 9-11. Believe me this is far from a slum.

@Nayelle1290 Not at all. Most of the Senegambians came to the U.s. and they were only 5% of the whole slave trade. The majority of slaves in PR came from the Yoruba & Igbo tribe. And in Cuba & Brazil the slaves were from Angola/Congo (Bantu), Benin & Nigeria (Yoruba).

@1msbracey Dude, they are not stealing. Puerto Ricans have african roots, so is it stealing when it's in their blood? And the reason people deny their heritage is because of the way our society's mentality was manifactured to do. People are raised to deny, up to the point when it becomes wired into their brain. It's not their fault. Atleast many are trying now to go back into their african roots, ever since the 70s.
Because, perhaps English is a part of the Neo-modern Puertorican identity. Maybe also seeing as this is an English language website, people are compelled to write in English. Or Maybe they just plum don't know Spanish. Does that make anyone less Puerto Rican? Less in touch with their roots?
Even you a so called "real Puerto Rican" (if there is such a term)should know that the cultural identity of "your people" (notice how I took myself out of the equation) is Spaniard, Taino and African. Than why not represent all these elements and not just one. I am not saying Puerto Rico is majority black or mulatto. No my argument is there is a significant African influence and heritage on the island and its people.

I am not a puerto rican, but my husband and his family is, there are some who are very light and some who are very dark. So what is the big deal, to deny the cultures is to deny Puerto Rico.

Reynaldo Nuñez, primero lee la historia musical de Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haití, Dominicana, etc y no sigas diciendo cosas que te hacen ver como un completo ignorante de la historia musical en las islas del Caribe..... 1.- La música llegó a las islas Caribeñas más o menos en el mismo tiempo, por tanto no define nada. 2.- Hay influencia de África, España, Francia, etc en todas las islas, así que tampoco define nada. 3.- La diferencia está en que en los 1800's es Cuba la que mezcló y adaptó los instrumentos de percusión africanos, con los instrumentos de vientos, metales y cuerdas, como lo son piano, bajo, guitarras, timbal, la flauta, las trompetas, etc y de ahi sacaron ritmos bailables muy diferentes a los traídos por los africanos, españoles y franceses......... de esa mezcla de instrumentos es que sale la musica popular bailable cubana y que se le llama salsa tambien; es tambien en Cuba que se baila por primera vez en el 1879 en pareja enlazada y con los pasos básicos que hoy todavía se bailan en la Salsa, antes de eso se bailaba suelto, independiente o en grupo, pero no en pareja..... y este mismo video de Bomba lo muestra, bailan suelto y no se parece en nada a como se baila la Salsa, no hay instrumentos europeos, solo de origen africano, esto no es Salsa.......todo esto está muy bien documentado la Salsa es música cubana, que se hizo tan y tan popular en el mundo a principio de los años 1900's que todo el mundo empezó a utilizar esta misma mezcla que hicieron los cubanos, despues cada pais le puso su estilo y sabrosura, pero nunca ha dejado de ser música cubana y baile creado en Cuba........

In Ecuador also there are african ecuadorians who play BOMBA songs , they live in a region called Valle del Chota , they escaped from slavery from the low lands and are living there since 17 century , so , I think their BOMBA is really goob prove of african ancestry .

Puerto Ricans are a mix of Taino Indian, European (mainly from Spaniard from Southern Spain) and African (Yoruba, Congo, Mandinga and others........). Studies have shown that roughly 60% of the Puerto Ricans on the island possess some Taino ancestry through the maternal side. The same study also shows that roughly 30% of Puerto Ricans on the island have a female sub Saharan ancestor and 20% have a male sub Saharan African ancestor.
Even the spanish spoken in Puerto Rico is far from Castillian you cant even deny that. The spanish language spoken in PR has phrases and words from the Taino that were almost decimated and the West Africans brought to the Island as slaves. Taino: Huracan, Hamaca, Bohio, Batey, Yuca. African: Bochinche, Gandinga, Mofongo, Modongo, and Fulano. Oh cant forget the influence from the Canary Islands to.

My estimate is that about half of the population possesses some type of African ancestor from maternal or paternal lines. I can't confirm this though but from observing of my own family and the fact that I have seen a lot of Boricuas with distinct African features I think that estimate may be correct. Keep in mind there is still a very strong indigenous presence in the Puerto Rican gene pool.

What if some one was to post a video documentary that demonstrated the beautiful cultures of the Spaniard, the Taino and the African in equal value? What would you say? What if this video also included deep commentary on the intermingling of these three groups and how this blending culminated into the creation of a unique people, would you take offense to that?

If you must know my geograpic location here it goes I currently live in downtown Jersey City aproximately 5 minutes outside of downtown Manhattan. The area i live in is referred to as Wall Street West. There are a large amount of young urban professionals out here due to the 9-11 terrorist attacks so property value is twice as high than average. I dont know if you know this but property taxes have gone up 30% in NJ since 9-11. Believe me this is far from a slum.

@Nayelle1290 Not at all. Most of the Senegambians came to the U.s. and they were only 5% of the whole slave trade. The majority of slaves in PR came from the Yoruba & Igbo tribe. And in Cuba & Brazil the slaves were from Angola/Congo (Bantu), Benin & Nigeria (Yoruba).

@1msbracey Dude, they are not stealing. Puerto Ricans have african roots, so is it stealing when it's in their blood? And the reason people deny their heritage is because of the way our society's mentality was manifactured to do. People are raised to deny, up to the point when it becomes wired into their brain. It's not their fault. Atleast many are trying now to go back into their african roots, ever since the 70s.
Because, perhaps English is a part of the Neo-modern Puertorican identity. Maybe also seeing as this is an English language website, people are compelled to write in English. Or Maybe they just plum don't know Spanish. Does that make anyone less Puerto Rican? Less in touch with their roots?

Even you a so called "real Puerto Rican" (if there is such a term)should know that the cultural identity of "your people" (notice how I took myself out of the equation) is Spaniard, Taino and African. Than why not represent all these elements and not just one. I am not saying Puerto Rico is majority black or mulatto. No my argument is there is a significant African influence and heritage on the island and its people.

I am not a puerto rican, but my husband and his family is, there are some who are very light and some who are very dark. So what is the big deal, to deny the cultures is to deny Puerto Rico.

Reynaldo Nuñez, primero lee la historia musical de Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haití, Dominicana, etc y no sigas diciendo cosas que te hacen ver como un completo ignorante de la historia musical en las islas del Caribe.....
1.- La música llegó a las islas Caribeñas más o menos en el mismo tiempo, por tanto no define nada.
2.- Hay influencia de África, España, Francia, etc en todas las islas, así que tampoco define nada.
3.- La diferencia está en que en los 1800's es Cuba la que mezcló y adaptó los instrumentos de percusión africanos, con los instrumentos de vientos, metales y cuerdas, como lo son piano, bajo, guitarras, timbal, la flauta, las trompetas, etc y de ahi sacaron ritmos bailables muy diferentes a los traídos por los africanos, españoles y franceses......... de esa mezcla de instrumentos es que sale la musica popular bailable cubana y que se le llama salsa tambien; es tambien en Cuba que se baila por primera vez en el 1879 en pareja enlazada y con los pasos básicos que hoy todavía se bailan en la Salsa, antes de eso se bailaba suelto, independiente o en grupo, pero no en pareja..... y este mismo video de Bomba lo muestra, bailan suelto y no se parece en nada a como se baila la Salsa, no hay instrumentos europeos, solo de origen africano, esto no es Salsa.......todo esto está muy bien documentado la Salsa es música cubana, que se hizo tan y tan popular en el mundo a principio de los años 1900's que todo el mundo empezó a utilizar esta misma mezcla que hicieron los cubanos, despues cada pais le puso su estilo y sabrosura, pero nunca ha dejado de ser música cubana y baile creado en Cuba........
