good work buddy, try placing the logs on top of a big peice of log as a base. should help with the bouncing a bit.

Love my X27, a joy to use all day. I find using it with White Ox gloves takes the vibe out should I overstrike. Same suggestion as others here, going with the grain and peeling the big rounds I find is easier than trying to split across the centre. I cut them shorter when its tough stuff too. Also I find good roundhouse technique is more efficient. Great day out with the kids, they'll remember these days all of their lives and remind you of how much they enjoyed it when they get older. Usually when I split chips & chunks go flying really hard & fast. That little fella will find this out the hard way that close with no sunnies on

Nice video. I'm an x27 convert. I grew up in the uk and used axes mostly (it was mostly pine) but then when I moved to Australia, everyone was using mauls. I tried for a few years before I bought an X27. It's still nice to have a maul on hand for stubborn pieces but I'll get 99% done with the x27 in half the time.
Imagine the time difference if you did the same test over several cubic metres!!!!! you'd be way ahead with the x27. With the really wet big logs, I will take the sapwood off one or two sides (it comes off easy with a sharp axe). If you do that, you will find you can split it down the middle fairly easy after that. Wood dries from the inside out so that sapwood is super moist and stretchy. If you strike the middle in a big log, the energy for the blow gets absorbed in that sapwood and the axe bounces.
I have to split around 15-20 m3 next week and the site is too steep and muddy to get a log splitter in so I'm doing it by hand. Maybe I'll put up a video and show you what I mean. Follow my channel, please.

Greetings from upstate New York. I like the fact, the kids are outside with dad, the outdoors is a wonderful place to be. I bought the Fiskars X27 splitting axe about four years ago. Its been a great addition to my vintage Plumb and Segar Chemical double bits. I also received the Husqvarna S2800 Splitting axe which I like as well. I'm not a fan of our American traditional mauls. I have a cheaper Mint Craft Pro 6 lb maul, I bought at the local hardware store, years ago. I use it as a sledge hammer and pound wedges in massive rounds once in a blue moon. I'm carious in the Fiskars Iso Core maul, but eight pounds seems very heavy and cumbersome. They had a 6 lb version on amazon but I don't know if Fiskars discontinued it. Its not available anymore. In Europe, they've had the X37 Splitting Maul for years, I currently came across in a video but it never made its way to the states. I like the Fiskars X27 and Husqvarna S2800, they're splitting axes but like a hybrid. In between a felling axe and a maul, without the hefty weight. I just wish the Iso Core maul was more stream lined and less in weight.

Glad to hear you like the x27! My boys love getting outdoors fishing etc. The maul is a weird beast. Good when you need it for those real tough ones but otherwise fairly useless. Then I upgraded to a cheap hydraulic. My poor axes have hardly been used since lol

@@aussiedadlifeUPDATE! I bought the Fiskars 8lb Isocore Splitting Maul. I think its fantastic for quartering rounds and than split the quarters with the X27. I thought the splitting maul maybe too heavy to swing but its really not. Its quite effective and beastly. It could use a little tickle with the bastard file but just a bit to get a little more of a bite on the edge. Don't let those axes and maul sit sir, they were made to swing as our four fathers did years before us. Keep the axe tradition going!

With the large green rings it would work better to go round the outsides with the x27 and peel it like an onion. Saying that I bought one and broke it the first day. Took it back and swapped it for the eight pound hart. Its a great tool I have three of them. Only problem with the hart is the soft handle wears out fast

With this gum think might be bluegum I've been splitting, still totally green I've found the bark actually holds it together significantly on some pieces, like a hose clamp basically, so I've found knocking an edge off the round to break the bark helps

The firewood must be split from the roots to the top. If you cut from the top towards the roots, then the lighter block will be difficult to split.

I have both too. The maul has its place but yeah, wears you out pretty quick. It stays at home most wood runs.
X27 is my go to splitter too 🪓🪵
On stubborn coins it’s easier to rip into the sides a little way with a saw to get the split started. Makes for much lighter work 👌

Good form in ya swings, plenty of power. Just remember to split it as ya cut the blocks off otherwise the ends dry out and the axe or maul wont do much.
And for big blocks dont forget to go with the grain, there are no awards for being able to split big 20" blocks in half apart from a broken back 🤟

Anything under 14" in diameter the x27 would be perfect. Over thst would depend if dry or wet and how thick etc.
