The Year 1812 Solemn Overture, festival overture in E♭ major, Op. 49, popularly known as the 1812 Overture is a concert overture written in 1880 by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to commemorate the successful Russian defense against Napoleon's invading Grande Armée in 1812.
The overture debuted in Moscow on August 20, 1882 conducted by Ippolit Al'tani under a tent near the then-unfinished Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, which also memorialized the 1812 defense of Russia. Tchaikovsky himself conducted another performance at the dedication of Carnegie Hall in New York City. That was one of the first times a major European composer visited the United States.
The 15 minute overture is best known for its climactic volley of cannon fire, ringing chimes, and brass fanfare finale. It has also become a common accompaniment to fireworks displays on the United States' Independence Day. The 1812 Overture went on to become one of Tchaikovsky's most popular works, along with his ballet scores to The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty, and Swan Lake. - เพลง

I'm not crying, I just got a Tchaikovsky in my eye
I remember playing this with a youth orchestra when I was 16. I doubled for horn on alto sax and woth it being a reed instrument, double and triple tonguing was very hard, as well as getting that lovely Horn sound that one wants to hear in this piece. The start of the finale made me feel very vulnerable and exposed, especially because it's such an iconic and well-known piece. Along with 1812 we did a couple of pieces from Star Wars, Kaiserwalzer by Strauss and Beethoven's 5th. A very nice repetoire for horn, albeit a little taxing on the lips, as I now know. I felt very out of place in the orchestra and I decided that I'd start with French Horn. I did so shortly after the last performance the orchestra had and I've never regretted it once.
This piece will always have a special place in my heart because it played an important part in turning me to the French Horn.
Fun fact: Tchaikovsky himself actually hated this piece.
Really? I always felt this piece sounded like a joke and i don't mean it's bad cause i love it, i mean like the composer is making fun of a genre, like a parodic piece like Weird Al.

What is that I'm hearing @ 7:30? Is that the same chord progression in the Horns that I've also heard in the Nutcracker Ballet, specifically in Act 1?
The chord progression at that part is just I-V7-I-V7. Perhaps you mean the modulation a little later?
Or do you mean that the specific voicing of the Horns’ chords are the same?
Not a very distinct chord progression so yeah not very surprising
Its probably the russian folk song that he wove into the compositions that you might be hearing. In this piece he used that, as well as the marsellaise and cannons and pastoral parts and marches as imagery to commemorate the story of russia's defeat and napoleons retreat.

This is a good rendition but the cannons sound added in and too small.
so the first couple pages overture r 2 part viola and 4 part cello?? if so that explains why it’s so deliciously rich❤️also seems to sound like a 1-2 instruments per part vs later on in the overture, or am i mishearing?
yeah i'm pretty sure it's supposed to be 2 instruments per line in the very beginning!

Hello! The text on the staff which you refer to is a note from the composer that roughly translates to: "The bells shall be large and of the same pitch. They should be played like celebratory ringing."
And for the cannon, we get what debunks the myth of using "real" cannons. Tchaikovsky writes "The cannon (bombardone) is an instrument which is commonly used in theatres to represent cannon fire."

Why wouldnt he write for double bass extensions? Basses can go below E1 yknow.
Well maybe they couldn't in the 1800's when this was composed... I haven't been a string player in many years, and when I was, I did violin, so I wouldn't know. But that's the only reason I could imagine.
NevertahnProductions you could always just play notes that harmonize with the notes that are below E1. If your conductor is confused just tell him that basses can’t go below E1.
