Is there really no open space anywhere you write? It hurts to see so much get written over, even by such awesome stuff.
That's one of the best aspects of this art form, is it's inherent impermanence. It's like drawing in the sand at the beach or stacking rocks in a creek bed. If you make art in the forest and nobody is there to see it, it's still makes a sound. You still danced in creation with the universe.
It's also part of the 'game', which is a major aspect of graffiti culture. And is it really a burn when an artist covers a piece, or is it an invitation to the original artist to come back? Sometimes it is beef, but I think most of the time, it's just a good spot. Artists are just as likely to get bead blasted off a wall by the authorities. So it isn't meant to last. It's part of the fun! ;)
But hey, we're lucky since photo and video people make art with it as a subject matter, for us to enjoy, and to document it.

I definitely see your point, but I also know there's general guidelines; don't go over tribute murals or fresh burners if you don't wanna get hurt, for example. I know that not all burners are created equal, and I know that there isn't always enough space for everyone to get a burner up, but my objection is more in regards to the disrespect it shows the local culture to automatically go over any and every piece in a five-mile radius. Maybe it's the result of living in a town with a high-tourist-traffic legal wall (HOPE Outdoor Gallery) but I have a sort of sore spot for people coming into a scene they aren't a part of and going over everything there. Every place has its own graff culture, and to have an outsider come in and go over all the evidence of your existence when they could coexist in it feels like an attack. It shows that they don't know what the non-writers of the town hold in high regard, they don't know the history of the place, and they don't have any sort of camaraderie for fellow writers.
Don't get me wrong, I've gone over people before because I needed to, but that's in _my_ town. I don't go travelling around and try to find as much of the local scene I can erase with my invasive species of the artform, you feel?
