    This video it's incredible! I also want to be a marine biologist, I'm scared because people keep telling me that is so difficult to find a company and that If I do find one they are not going to pay me much, I don't really care that much about the money and I think that this proffesion is gorgeous and very interesting.
    I'm also aware of the climate change and I try to convince everybody of how important it is.
    The problem is that I live in Madrid, Spain. I will study biology and then I will be more specific with the marine biology doing a master or something. I want to study in Spain but I want to move to USA after my studies. Any advice?

      Hola!

    I only have one year of high school left, and then I’m taking a gap year to do ocean-y work. Cannot tell you how long I have been waiting to graduate! I’ve always loved animals, but mostly the ocean. Specifically cetaceans and I’m in one of the best places on Earth to see them (apparently anyways, just not this spot, they love north of here and south of here, just not here and it’s annoying).
    I also wanted to be a dolphin trainer (when I was like, in grade one). Just a few days ago I wanted to study cetaceans here and in New Zealand or Australia, but Maria’s vlogs and trips have made me realize that there is so much more out there than just those three coastlines.
    Thank you for having a marine biology channel, there aren’t very many, I love your videos! Makes me kind of want to start a channel...
    Should I?

    What happens when you don’t receive funding for research? I want to go into Marine Biology, but I don’t understand how you guys earn money since it’s not a traditional 9-5 style job, and also are their any health benefits (health/life insurance, etc)

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Your income depends on your position. In a research group there are several different types of positions. Permanent positions, like professorships, assistant professors, permanent scientific staff, lab technicians, are paid by their institutions, usually universities, and they have a normal contract. Unfortunately these are only a very small part of research groups. For these people, their salary is secure. However, they still need to get money to pay for their research, and they do that by applying for funding. If they don't get funded, they can't do much science and have to rely on the little they might have to do whatever research they can. That is why richer countries usually have better research labs. The rest of the people, like master and PhD students, Pos-docs, other technicians, are usually paid by grants or the same projects that fund research, that last usually up to 3 years. If you are one of these people, you have to keep on applying for funding until you get it. As for the benefits, that will depend on your contract, which usually depends on the country you are in. Here in Austria, as a PhD student I have all health benefits as I would if I were a normal university employee, which is very good. I hope that answered your question :)

    95% of the oceans are still unexplored right..!! So I think more people are needed to do that including marine biologisst and marine science professionals. So analysing this situation the employment opportunities must be pretty high right..?!
    So I would like to know about on what basis you spoke about finding a job in Marine biology is competitive and complicated??!

    • @Seamemaria
      @Seamemaria  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I based that on my knowledge of the field. Unfortunately there is usually not much money involved in environmental sciences, unless they are applied sciences. Which means that stable job opportunities are not abundant. In addition to that there are more people wanting to pursue this career, making it very competitive, since there are not enough available positions for everyone. Of course the situation will be different in different countries. Usually richer countries fund more environmental sciences projects.

    So I know one way of gaining money is to get funded by government funding agencies, but can you also gain money by running a go fund me or non government funding such as family, friends, etc?

    • @SadFace201
      @SadFace201 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have very limited experience so take this with a grain of salt: My understanding of government funding agencies is that they act similarly to your research publications in that they serve as a track record of your success (akin to what you would put down on a resume when applying for work). If you're needing to use alternative sources like crowdfunding to fuel your research, it just sounds like you were unable to convince people about the importance of your work through the regular channels (i.e. government funding agencies). While taking funds from private companies is possible, I think these need to be scrutinized carefully. For example, taking money from a tobacco company that wants to fuel your research on smoking is bound to raise some eyebrows and can even be career suicide for a scientist.

Starting with a bachelor in Biology is totally fine (I did it), you can specialize afterwards during your masters and PhD, or you can even try to volunteer in marine research labs during your bachelor to gain some experience, which I highly recommend. • @alganhar1
      @alganhar1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, as a Marine Biologist, I would suggest Medicine if you are equally passionate about both. Pay is better, job security is generally better, and job availability is generally better.
      Saying that however it really does require you all to really take a close look at what you want. Both careers can be extremely rewarding, I am a Marine Biologist whilst my wife is a Surgeon, neither of us regret our decisions!
      I did not have quite the same decision, though it was similar, I wanted either Marine Biology or Vetinary Medicine, in the end I saw an episode of James Herriots TV series where he had his arms buried inside a pregnant cow for 12 hours during a difficult birth and that kind of decided the matter for me!
      Be aware however, both fields will require hard work, and often long hours. Maria was not joking when she was talking about the long hours when undertaking field work, in fact in some respects she was understating it. I have spent 8 hours a day just underwater whilst collecting data. Thats before pre dive briefing, post dive debriefing, collating and storing samples, equipment maintenance, pre dive and post dive checks and all the other myriad things you end up doing. 12 - 14 hour days were not unusual.
      Medicine is no different, sometimes worse, my wife spent years doing 12+ hour shifts, and even now she is on more or less constant call. A bad accident happening somewhere could see an 8 hour shift turn into an 18 hour marathon, or a day off turning into 12 hours in the operating theatre.....
