Actually thing is the hand of a main character in another show that the creators of Wednesday made. The hand is stitched up because the main character who had the hand got it hurt a lot. The hand is somehow moving without any magic. Or anyone controlling it.

The real backstory of Thing:
So, the producer of the original Addams Family movie had another movie they directed. One of the characters, a man, lost his hand in that movie. My guess is that one of the Addams’ found the hand somewhere and decided to put it back together and make it alive, creating the first moments of Thing.
The addams family think he's a long lost ancestors hand but doesn't know where he originated
Idk someone else in the comments said thing came from the butler but the Netflix changed that presumably because it was a more child friendly remake

I know thing doesn't have a cannon age but he's gotta be way older than Wednesday as in the original Addams Family, she was 4 or maybe 8 at the time and Thing was still around. Thing is basically a childhood friend and all that.

in a 1800/1900 movie, a guy had to cut off his hand because it was possessed. He then changed it into a chainsaw hand. But the thing is his hand ran off by itself into the woods into the mountains. What if thing went to their house in the mountains??

She probably treats thing so poorly now because he sacrificed his life to save her and she actually cared about him so when he did that she remorseful or felt bad cause she didn’t need him to.
