What the heck is jicama? Many people haven’t heard about this amazing root vegetable, and that’s why Dr. Gundry is here to talk all about it! Originating from South America this crispy, starchy and sweet vegetable is the PERFECT addition to your diet on your health journey. In this episode, Dr. Gundry shares the 5 benefits you can reap from consuming this tasty veggie.
Best way to eat fresh Jicama is peeled, thinly sliced into a bowl then covered with lemon juice and sprinkled with lemon pepper. Great crunchy "no cook" snack that is healthy too!
I’m going to try this. I have never eaten jicama.
Thanks for the tips! Just tried it raw and love it!
Me neither@@HarrisPilton789 Up until now I had been limiting my health by eating the same boring foods!
My husband and I love Jicama. We like to eat it as a snack. We slice it like chips however it’s thicker. We squeeze lime juice all over it and we add a seasoning called Tajin it’s a mixture of chili flakes with salt and some lime flavor. Makes my mouth water when I smell all these ingredients together. It’s soooo refreshing in the summer. I prefer eating my veggies raw I think it tastes better than cooked. 😋
Jicama, tajin chili powder and squeeze a lime 😋
Peel chop into small squares
Lime , avocado, cilantro
This salad is amazing
So fresh
Dr.Grundy - we include sliced jicama in vegetables spring rolls - so crunchy and yummy, also we eat it as it, so healthy and refreshing in hot countries. We love jicama.....called it singkamas in my native language.
I recently decided to try jicama and bought one at the local Co-op. I usually fast until at least noon. My first meal of the day includes a selection of root vegetables, whatever is currently available. I slice them, dip them in avocado oil mayonnaise and eat the slices raw. I enjoy the jicama. It has a unique taste and just like Dr. Gundry, I thought that it tastes kind of like an apple.
I went to google, then realize I have been eating jicama since young 😂. In Asia , we called it bengkuang, we ate it raw in our mixed salad with a black sweet prawn paste. I always love it but didn’t realize it’s a healthy food. Thanks for the info, will eat more now.
Seems fish/shrimp paste is the preferred partner for jicama in Asia.
In the Philippines we eat as snack just like that taking off the skin. I put it in my chop suey and my veggies egg roll. I make salad out of it with raw mango cucumbers cilantro and lime juice. Thanks for giving the benefits of Jicama n other tips to prepare it ❤
Raw Jicama sticks are crisp, light with no need for anything it’s like a celery stick, it’s a great snack or dipper for guacamole, I would eat these to replace lunch during my lunchtime walk 💚
I’m going to try them as guacamole dippers. Thanks!
I put jicama in the salad of my tacos and regular plain old salads. It does great in tacos, Excellent texture.
I also add it in my salads and it adds wonderful flavor and crunchy texture.
You’re a good dude , Doc
I went to sprouts to buy a jicama and they were covered in wax, I guess to retain freshness. I found it easy to peel and tried out a French fry recipe and it was ok. Now that I know of the inulin and nutritional profile I think I will shred it on my salads like a carrot and or try it using my new hand held potato slicer that has a shredding blade on the other side of it and try a raw pesto pasta. Just bought 5 of your books and see I will definitely have to make changes when it comes to making my salsa. Maybe making bulk salsa in advance and either freezing or freeze drying it so I have it on hand at all times. The only constant in life is change. Thank you for all you do Dr. Gundry to keep us healthy😊
How did frying it went? It tend to have a lot of water in it. Did you put batter on it?
@@TaLeng2023 no batter and I won’t be making them again….i don’t personally think they are a tasty substitute for French fries.
@@wisteria4981 did you manage to make the outside crispy?
@@TaLeng2023 they were kinda crunchy but the taste was not a close resemblance of potato. I’d made a hamburger and 1000 island French fry dip and it just was disappointing. The hamburger alone was better without them. There’s not a very good substitute for fries that I’ve found out yet. Once in a great while I just have mini gold potatoes baked or cut up like fries.
I love jicama. I make fries, shred it with cabbage and add lime juice and seasonings for fish tacos, in place of apples for a mock apple pie etc...
I have bought them a a whole foods store already cut like fries and dipped them in the Gundry guacamole recipe provided his book. Pretty good on both counts.
Tried making air-fried jicama fries after watching this vid. They were absolutely delicious, will be having again in the near future. Thanks for tips Dr. G, great stuff!
Thank You, Dr. G.
In south-east-asia , jicama is always eaten raw in salads or snacks.
My grandma in mexico ate this almost everyday with chilis and lived up 109 and never visited doctor 😊
I loved jicama!I almost eat it everyday ..the way I eat jicama is i cut it into small stripped and put vinegar and salt and pepper..they are so delicious and crunchy.
Con chili to y limón
Thank you Dr Gundry! I love Jicama❤
Thank you.
Watching this video as I'm eating jicama with lime juice, tajin and salt .. chilled of course is the best way
I juice jicama so that I get more veges and not as much fruit in my juices. It makes a great juice...even just on its own. Or you can juice jicama and then blend with dates to make a sweet milk. Im going to try fries and chips. Thanks.
its call sengkuang in asia malaysia, singapore. they eat raw in rojak.
I cut them in to sticks and eat them with my blanched almond butter or pecan butter too! It’s more like a afternoon snack.😊
Love jicama! Sprinkled with some sea salt flakes
Love them, didn't no they had so many benefits
I love jicama with tajin liquid and honey!!
Try it you will love it
I slice it raw and drizzle some salt. Yummy snack or if meal is not satisfying, this can help.
I usually eat it fresh with nothing on it or with spicy shrimp paste sause so delicious!!!!!
Im from Mexico and I have one of those a day, cheap and great. Can you talk about the Zapote Family? I have already give the fruit the boot but besides the sweetness I think they must be loaded with polyphenols right? Because the orange and specially the black ones are really incredible in colours.
I love jicama
Thanks
The first time i tried them, definitely hook, love it
I love jicama! I eat it raw with or without a salad ❤
I just bought jicama wraps from Trader Joe’s. ❤
I love these ideas!
Can't wait to try it like french fries. Do you recommend to buy organic jicama or is conventional OK? No stores in my area w/ organic jicama.
Apple/carrot merged
We eat jicama a lot 🇲🇽
Hi Doctor Gundry, speaking about inulin, what do you think about drinking chicory coffee? I drink it three times a day, instead of coffee, here in Italy my grandparents used to drink it. Is it healthy as it seems? Thank you so much!
Great question! I was thinking the same thing. I drink it as well.
@@capecyn I hope he'll answer🤞🤗
Being hispanic, I love jicama. a little watermelon and small amount of tajin with it is awesome. ❤❤
I juice Jicama,so so delicious and I cut it up like French fries and eat them raw delicious
It is delicious and I am so happy I love it, thank you for the affirmation that this is good to eat 🎉❤
@4:08 ? Maybe 400 degrees for 25 minutes?
Great video! I eat Jicama everyday. Question... why is it mentioned at the end of the video to avoid storing it in the fridge? That's actually where I store my jicama
It’s confusing. I think once you cut into then you store it in the refrigerator
I guess he meant not storing it in the fridge as a whole thing. I am eating my jicama sticks now, cool and crisp stored in fridge for 3 days.
I julienne the entire piece and store the strips in a fridge container with water so it stays fresh and wet.
I dip into ranch. But my dog love jicama too. So i share. Lol
I grew up with Jicama. Peel the skin and eating like fruit. Medium sized are more tastier. Every kids like them.
Is it available in the UK? 🇬🇧
I can’t find it in giant or Wei’s markets in York pa. ???
Does Jicama have phytoestrogens? If so, I need to avoid this because of endometrial hyperplasia.
Explain please.
Just add lime and salt.

If fiber is not carbs then why do they include them in carb count? Serious question
I know that fiber is counted as a carbohydrate and that people subtract the grams of fiber from the total carb count to say what their "net carbs" are. On your specific question, I anticipate it is because fiber isn't protein or fat and the food pyramid plate folks categorize it as a carb. The other reason is likely that it is considered a carb is that fiber is not found in protein or fat.
Is it good for IBS? I already go multiple unwanted times a day .
From a former IBS victim, I am symptoms-free now. what worked for me was following LOWFOD MAP diet guidelines. Also, I logged the food items that triggered my IBS and I just don’t eat them. Drinking cold liquids is a big one, avoid it as much as you can. Avoid contaminated water including tap water, water from restaurants, and ice from food chains and restaurants is usually contaminated. Either install a reverse osmosis water filtration or buy it from water shops. Drinking clean water is very important.
Remember that IBS does not stem from a weak digestive system. It’s quite the opposite. It stems from a selective digestive system that only accepts clean and minimally processed foods.

I am sorry, you want me to eat a carb that is mostly fiber and is not nutrient dense? It is not local and has to be shipped? You are starting to sound like another bought and paid for academics spouting whatever your sponsors tell you to. This is what happens when money influences the message.
Its local for me as I live in the tropical region. I can grow it myself.
I’m in Arizona it’s local here
I'm in Los Angeles & they're here. Go to a grocery store in a Latin community, You'll find it.
