I consider this movie to be in the same group as Candyman where the main character tries to do good (and ignores common sense), but because they are messing with things they don't understand they inevitably end up being punished. Sometimes, it really is better to listen when people tell you to mind your business.
I think that's sweet that you're conflicted Nick. The way I feel about Papa and Mama Justify is the same way I feel about Candyman. They were black fictional characters who were victims of extreme racism, however they're still villains. I also feel like their symbolic representations of what can happen when racism goes to far.
I always got scared by it. Like don’t mess around with something that you have no clue about. Like multiple people told her if you believe, the magic works. And by using the magic, she believes that it’ll work in protecting her. Leaving her vulnerable to being switched.
I remember as a kid I remember I didn't like the ending, probably the whole "the good guy has to win" mentality, but as an adult I think this movie is such a hidden gem, one of my favs from Kate's filmography.
Yes, the servants were the villains. One of the things I both hate and love about 2003ish to 2010ish horror movies is they didn't care if you felt good about the ending
I love this one in general but especially for the fact that there is truly not a happy ending. Too many horror movies that could easily still don't dare that. But the villains win over the protagonist that we follow. Still happens too rarely.
I love this movie. I lived in Louisiana at the time when it came out and I loved how well it captures the feel. When I moved back to California I remember telling a friend, kinda shyly, that I loved that movie even though everyone else hated it. To my surprise he told me he loved it too and couldn’t figure out the hate either! lol justice for skeleton key!
It's one of those movies I've seen like 10 times as a kid, but no one around me has ever mentioned it once since then. This movie is the definition of c*nty!
Kate Hudson glistening with humidity 😍 in a voodoo based horror - I feel like this movie was aimed directly at me 😅 Saw it in theater and have been a fan ever since. John Hurt gives an amazing perfomance despite saying almost nothing and I love Kate's shift once she's possessed.
I love this movie! Like you, I had no idea what was happening until the reveal. The servants, right for wanting revenge, were still evil for taking those children’s lives back in the day. Even knowing the twist, I enjoy rewatching and especially the line about no black woman sticking around for their nonsense.
The servants switched bodies with the children before they were killed. That was the whole point of the spell - for the servants to continue living. So the parents and their guests actually killed their kids, who were in the bodies of the servants. The servants were now in younger bodies, they went on with life, they got old, and did the body swapping again, and so on and so forth.
@kathleenclark815 right, but by that time the ritual was finished. The parents caught and killed "the servants" but they actually killed the kids souls in the servants bodies. The servants went on to live in the kids bodies until they grew old and did the ritual again.
Honestly I watched this movie a lot as a kid and it terrified me! For years I thought this was a R rated movie but I was shook when I found out it was pg-13. It’s so good!!!
13:07 I seen a video where people found a boarded up wall in a closet. When they opened it they found tunnels that were under their home. Old dusty brick tunnels. YUck! I always loved old houses UNTIL I started to think about all the hidden history that might be inside.
Omg the speed in which I clicked. I love this movie, have always loved this movie, and saw it in the theater when it first came out. And I was an original requester for this film. Thank you for finally doing it. 🙏
This movie is one of my all time favorites and the twist at the end was perfectly executed in my opinion. Now, whether Mama Cecile and Papa Justify we’re villains…..honestly it is grey. On the one hand, they were victims, but it doesn’t justify their actions after the incident in 1920.
I've seen twenty something of your reactions (I'm a horror fan) and you seem to be a very intelligent and funny young man, how and why you don't have at least 100.000 subs is beyond me... However, you're great, keep doing what you do and be yourself, I bet you'll do over 100.000 soon enough...
This was SO good and it does leave a lot of unanswered questions, just like The Gift, such an underrated gem! This reaction also answers my question from last time on a "SUPERNATURAL" reaction, lol. Everything about Buffy in Season 5 was 🤌.😊

Hey, Nick! Awesome reaction, I was waiting for it the entire week and it did not disappoint! Perfect southern gothic setting and amazing performances by both Hudson and Rowlands. I am very fond of this movie overall as I remember renting it waaay back from the videostore and enjoying it very much. I think it is a very good example of a twist ending so watching it again you manage to notice many things that eventually point to it. I mean, I love that, despite how astute and perceptive you generally are, the film kept throwing misdirections and twists at you so you exhausted all of them until coming to the final one. And what a twist it was! Regarding the villains, they are definitely bad people abusing their power(s) but there is an element of understanding, if not sympathy, in their determination and perseverence to escape their then current lives by any means. And your best quote must be: _"Crawling out of the window and rolling off the roof is not a spasm, it is a plan!"_ Also, both sides are fine, Nick, haha!
I love love love this movie and always have. It was the first “scary movie” that I saw when I was younger. Really stoked it was a movie that doesn’t have a happy ending, I always thought that was really cool.
Oh this one came out when PG-13 horror movies were good (or they at least were campy enough to have fun with). And I appreciated that it gave us the dark ending. (You’re so right about Kate Hudson’s hair in this btw lol 🤩)
Oh yes, honey! This movie is one of my favorites and one I revisit quite often (just like Stay Alive). I think the part of the movie you weren't so fond of, the servants continuing the spell with innocent people, is there to show how they were affected by their lives, by the way they were treated. They felt like their years in servitude were wasted so they wanted to make new memories and live a decent life so badly, that they forgot how to be kind.
Agreed with that analysis so much. Also, I have not heard Stay Alive mentioned in so long. I feel like that is another underrated one and it is wonderful. That would be awesome if he reacted to it as well.
@@izcanoli2539 I am glad someone else sees that too cause you can always interpret a movie your own way. I am not sure if he has but he had made a reference about it in another reaction if I remember correctly.

Enjoyed the reaction a lot! Subbed :) Just a note, though, is that you used the term "wheelchair-bound" a few times, and most disabled people prefer "wheelchair-user." "Bound" suggests paralysis and complete inability to walk, but paralysis is not as common as people think, and a lot of wheelchair-users are at least partially ambulatory. It also removes the negative connotation "bound" has, because wheelchairs are actually a symbol of freedom for most of us. Without them, we'd never get out and about, at least not without great difficulty or pain. I personally love mine. Painted it pink, call it my chariot. It's the only reason I can still go to concerts :)
The slaves were switched with the kids...so they were trying to find another woman. Kate. The old husband was already taken, they were just trying to find a female, Kate. I love this movie.
10:22 There's a movie called the Changling (1970 something) about an old house with a secret room. It was a murder mystery ghost story. Maybe you might watch it since you don't mind older movies.

Delightful as always & I was really looking forward to it. I actually watched this a couple weeks ago. It is one of my most watched movies. Someone mentioned this, but one of the best things is the not happy ending. That doesn’t show up that often - even in horror.
Great reaction! Have you watched "Jessabelle"? I don't do hospice, but I volunteer in a memory care wing for dementia patients. There are some truly beautiful people there, always looking to talk. I've had some of the best "pick up" lines used on me. One lady (who was convinced I was a hot twenty-something guy) came up to me and said, "You are FINE! You couldn't drive me away with a pocketful of snakes! I'm a country girl!"
I feel like this movie got a bit of a resurgence after Get Out was released, since this is like the other side of the coin to that story. This isn't my favorite, but I really like that whole idea of making her believe in order to get the magic to work.

random mention: i watched a horror which was actually pretty good and creepy! its called THE DARK AND THE WICKED 2020-..there is also a scene in it, involving the barn, where most people miss whats in the background.... that movie was nuts
I'm glad you finally got around to this :) I enjoy this movie and had Chance react to it, last month. I always enjoy this niche sub-genre of hoodoo/voodoo: Venom(2005), The Serpent and the Rainbow, The Believers, Def by Temptation, Eve's Bayou, etc.
so, at the party in the 20's when the servants had the kids in the attic, they (papa justify and mama cecile) were stealing their bodies. that's why when you see the kids at the window when they are being hung/burned, they have no real reaction to it. so the banker hung and burned his own kids. i'm guessing that the kids grew up to be the old couple when caroline comes because the old woman talked about "the brother and sister" they bought the house from in "'62". also guessing the movie is supposed to take place in the early 90's, even though it was filmed a decade later. that would line everything up, in terms of the timeline.

random mention: i watched a horror which was actually pretty good and creepy! its called THE DARK AND THE WICKED 2020-..there is also a scene in it, involving the barn, where most people miss whats in the background.... that movie was nuts
One of my favorite movies that’s really underrated
I'm glad you finally got around to this :) I enjoy this movie and had Chance react to it, last month. I always enjoy this niche sub-genre of hoodoo/voodoo: Venom(2005), The Serpent and the Rainbow, The Believers, Def by Temptation, Eve's Bayou, etc.
Already hooked on you. Great job!

No mirrors has something to do with spirits. 🧐
Ooooh I had forgot about this movie! But it's wicked good, purrrfect pick!
Such an underrated movie ! It’s always freaked me out since I was a kid 🤣
This movie is so good I used to watch it all the time 😂
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
so, at the party in the 20's when the servants had the kids in the attic, they (papa justify and mama cecile) were stealing their bodies. that's why when you see the kids at the window when they are being hung/burned, they have no real reaction to it. so the banker hung and burned his own kids. i'm guessing that the kids grew up to be the old couple when caroline comes because the old woman talked about "the brother and sister" they bought the house from in "'62". also guessing the movie is supposed to take place in the early 90's, even though it was filmed a decade later. that would line everything up, in terms of the timeline.
OMG great movie. You look amazing!!! Love the new place
It’s just been announced that Neve is returning to Scream! 😮
Love this movie! So underrated ❤️🔥
The building def gives huge TCM vibes till the point im about to google it. Looks WAY to similar.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the same house.
I kept waiting for Angela Bassett to show up. 😅
