A beautiful guitar is a beautuful guitar and beautiful guitar music is beautiful guitar music. The purists would not like this and that's ok. The steel lacks the warmth and expressiveness of the nylon but is still quite beautiful.
By warmth people mean lack of top end. Steel much brighter which is just more high end dominating the tone. It is a matter of taste and what you are used to. Personally the i like both, but slightly prefer the brighter tone.
This is great. I've just started playing classical guitar music on my steel string guitar and after a period of adjustment find it perfectly doable and it definitely has some advantages. Easier to get to the very high notes, better sustain and improved action.
Classical/flamenco/nylon string guitar has many issues, and fast strumming techniques were developed because of poor sustain, and quickly dying tone it has. Acoustic steel string guitar does sound better overall, clearer definition of the beginning and the end of tone, and has a superior sustain and clarity of tone.
Improved sustain, yes. But playing steel string without sliding noises and buzzing is hard. I personally prefer the sound of nylon strings. But Chapdelaine does an awesome job.
It really sounds great, my nylon strings guitar is broken so I started practicing on my steel one and it sounds amazing, specially the abanico (but it takes time to only get a proper technique that doesn't totally destroys your hand because obviously steel string are harder than nylon ones), it sounds so powerful yet so clear

Re-arrange, play every third note or so, with simplified strumming. So you have: 1) Fast flamenco-style strumming on a weak sustain nylon string guitar; 2) Moderate strumming on an acoustic guitar with much more sustain, and 3) at the very end of that spectrum, would be the electric guitar sound of Carlos Santana; gypsy-infused chords and melody, but the sustain is so great and immersive, that a player can focus on the subtlety of a single tone quality alone.
Beautiful in every way. Tone, phrasing, articulation, vibe... Tarrega I would think would be very happy to hear this, sweet as the tone is. I listened to the nylon string version also and I think the steel string version is the one.

I actually have a reason for commenting twice! Since 6 years ago, I heard a completely unrelated composition that used the same bass lines as yours. Now that anyone """stole""" anything, but really fascinating how nothing is truly new with only 12 notes at our disposal.
I listened to this with my head phones on and my eyes closed. At one point it felt like I was sitting in parlor with the King and Queen of Spain while Michael played for the Court. I am still not entirely convinced that Mr. Chapdelaine doesn't have 7 fingers on each hand. Michael's fretboard is where science and art flirt with each other.
I like that first position fingering on that second part on the f modulation. I tried the "traditional" 3rd position barre with my steel string and it's almost impossible to make it sound strong specially that f(6th string)base and d melody with an e ornament on the second string.
Absolutely BRILLIANT! The steel strings seem to evoke the story from a male pont of view, while the classical nylon to me is more soft, delicate and carries a feminine aspect. So beautiful! May I ask what gauge are your strings? i just started guitar, I’ve got a classical background in violin. My guitar is a Martin D-15 Special with medium gauge (13-56) elixir strings. The sound is not as loud or nice as when I use a pick when I strum.

Thanks Peter: Of course he could be quite horrible to students. That is not private, nor was it unique to that third lesson I had with him. However, the event did put an end to a rather skyrocketing, at the time, career as a classical guitarist . There was no internet back then and the international classical guitar community got much of it's news and opinions via a fairly vivacious and, often malignant grapevine. The story that went out to the world was of a cocky classical guitarist from New Mexico who intentionally tried to offend the maestro and then bragged about it in a TV interview when the "masterclass and commemorative" came to a close. Of course, the internet has set the record straight recently, but the promising career cannot be returned. Ironically, I would likely not have begun composing, arranging pop music or playing steel strings had the event been accurately re-told. I love what I work at now. Karma....

It's not. Though dreadnought bodies (most common type) do sound bad for plucking. Steel string acoustics have a lot of different bodies. Personally I think the parlor body sounds best, it's a bit smaller than the standard classical. I think a nylon stringed made with a parlor body, or one of the smaller classical guitar bodies from the same time, would sound better than it does now. The body is not the best for plucking, it sacrifices clarity for loudness in the same way the bigger steel strings do.

They are steel (all metal). As in for acoustic guitar not classical. Though they may be electric strings as the bass look more sliver than bronze. Then again it might just be the colouring of the video. It certainly doesn't sound like your average steel performance. He has a remarkable tone.
acoustic folk guitar strings are all steel. ( classic guitar strings are usually 2 nylon E and B and 4 copper wound silk core strings E A D G.) WRONG! classic guitar strings are usually 3 nylon E , B ,and g . 1, 2 and 3 . and 3 copper wound silk core strings E, A, D. 6, 5 and 4

That's just his technique. It's actually a bit too steely for my tastes and I feel conflicted about it because he is obviously incredible.
