I’ve had my Breville Oracle (US) for approximately 7 years now. Had an issue with it after about 2 years, but that was due to me not descaling it. Breville sent me a pre-paid box to mail it to them, they descaled it, sent it back, and provided me directions to do it…got it back within a week! Since then, I regularly descale it and have absolutely no issues with it. Worth every penny!! I had the Gaggia before this machine too and it was a great machine, but this is a much better machine when you are serving friends and family and need to do multiple shots, hot water, etc…everyone loves the espresso from it.
I’ve had my Sage Orical for over 5yrs now with no faults so far, and I must say that it’s the best coffee machine that I’ve ever had, the White glove service at the beginning was really helpful in knowing how to use and clean the machine, it makes really nice espresso and perfect lattes ☕️ it’s a must have for all serious coffee lovers 👍🏻☕️😎
Agree, it is something for people that love their coffee :-) I actually stopped using mine for a few months and just used a French Press, however I have just gone back to using it again and remember how much I missed it!
Just got mine for a really good price (£995 from JL). It’s great. A tip for the milk... for semi skimmed, go to advanced settings (from off, press single shot and power button) Set the steam temperature to 130C and the air to 55C/5 seconds. Then set the milk to 60C and two lines above Late. You will get perfect micro foam!
Hey, Have you found this to make a big difference with your art? I am getting there slowly with the art on current settings however down for trying something that might make the milk better?
I just wanted to say that i thought your review was Great! Thanks for the perfect, balanced and easy to understand review of this machine, i found it very helpful.
Apologies, I think I may have been muddled with my first machine that did have a cup warmer that you could turn on and off. I don’t believe you can’t turn this one off as it is heated by the boiler which is always going to be on.
I’ve had 2 oracles they last about 5 years each not bad considering the punishment and daily use cheaper coffee machines last about year weighing it up the oracle is worth the money considering savings of buying on the way to work coffee alone
Hi - thanks for the review. Just about to go ‘Add to basket’ on one of these. Three quick questions... 1. Have you had any problems in your 3 years of ownership? 2. Do you use bottled water like Lockhills to keep down limescale etc or do you just use tap water and the built in filter in the water tank? 3. Have you needed to descale regularly? Thanks
drybiscuit hi! I did have a problem at first with grinder cutting out, had to call a service and they took it away to be fixed, was not happy that it happened brand new. Apart from that no issues since owning it, I think that issue was a one off. 2. Tap water only and use filter. 3. Have never had to descale it only used the clean cycle for general upkeep , I think the filter does a good job. You would be very happy if you get one, I love coffee and this produces excellent espresso shots consistently each time. It’s expensive but the best so you get what you pay for.
Try keeping the milk flow constant whilst pouring - that should help with your latte art. Let me know if you see any improvements :) Thanks for the video, quite complete!
Hi! The stupid thing is I am a trained barista, using a professional machine I can create art no issues, but for some reason it just does not want to work at home? I thought it was because I was just being greedy and using large Starbucks mugs which aren't really cut out for art, but I tried it with one of my cappuccino cups and still rubbish! I just think the professional machine steams the milk in a few seconds and makes a better pour? Who knows.... Im never that fussed about how pretty it looks at home though :-). Thanks for the tip, I will give it a try anyways and see what happens!! :-)
I have a double boiler as well. Ever since I descaled the machine, Every time I make coffee, the hot water runs the same time. How can i fix this issue?
This is a great review! Very well done! I know this review is from three years ago, but after three years of use, do you still like this machine? Have you had any problems with it? I am considering between thus machine and the Oracle Touch, but I am leaning more towards this machine. Thank you so much.
Hi yes I used it this morning to my a latte! Still going well and no issues. The touch version can put just after I got mine and I was a bit annoyed because I might have got it! However I think mine is a great machine and isn’t really that different. There are a number of reviews of the touch version on here to watch before you make up your mind.
I have just ordered mine on Amazon £825. The Touch is more than double the price, so was a no brainier for me. I would have bought the barista express if it was not for my wife who has been used to a fully automatic and the express would have been too much fuff.
Thank you for such a great video. How do you find the dosing consistency - have you ever wanted to change from time based to volumetric? I'm keen to get the touch version for an easier interface for the whole family but know only this version gives you that option. That said I suspect I'll be in over my head if I start playing around at that level!
Hi! Thanks for the question! I have not changed the timing feature yet, just left it at 30 seconds and used the grind size to adjust the rate of flow. I tend to stick to the same beans so my machine is setup correctly for them and therefore I seem to get consistent results each time. I would have liked to get the touch screen version, it came about a few months after I got mine and at the time the price seemed very similar, I was a little annoyed! but oh well.
Thank you! Yes I still have it, not tend to use it as much as I did, currently I am drinking lots of coffee made in my french press. It is very reliable so far, I did have one minor problem when I first got it but Sage collected it and fixed it quickly (the grinder would cut out for no reason)
@@everythingandthekitchensinkthank you, your video was very impressive I wanted to buy one based on your review, but it is very expensive, I drink drip, pour over, French press, but never espresso and wanted to try something new. thanks for the video, I am buying a Sage machine, just want your advice, Sage The Oracle (around 2500$ ) , Sage SES 880 SST (around 1200$) or Sage SES 878 BSS (1000$) . other things want to know are those machines can be as good as the classic old expresso machine?
HI! I would say it does depend on your budget on this one. Both machines will produce excellent espresso shots. The 880, from what I can tell, grinds and you have to tamp and make sure the correct amount of coffee is in the porter filter. The extraction is the same as the Oracle, but I think the milk steamer is manual? But I am unsure on that one. The oracle will put the exact dose and tamp for you, the same each time. Extract the espresso and then the milk wand is automatic, you set the amount of foam and temp and it does the rest. I would ignore the 'touch screen' on the 880, I think it's a bit of a gimmick. Regarding are they the same as an old espresso machine - I would say yes! I have tried them all over the years and think that the Oracle is the best and has it all, I will not be swapping it anytime soon. So, the 880 is much more hands one - you have to do more work. The oracle requires you to do a little but the thinking part is done for you. Also, in the UK (unsure about other countries) they offer a 'white glove service' where they will visit your home and setup the machine and walk you through making your first drinks. But of course, you are paying for the best! Let me know what you go for! Both would make great coffee so you can't go wrong!
@@everythingandthekitchensinkSink: Thank you man for the replying and the tips, I will make my decision soon, still I did not hear your tip about the third machine I asked about (Sage SES 878 BSS) if it produces excellent espresso shots as well, if yes I would go for it as it is cheaper! Thank you in advance.
@@muunther HI! Sorry I missed the third one! From what I can tell its basically the same as the 880 but without the touch screen. So you are just paying for the touch screen. I do think it's more of a gimmick on the 880 as all it does is tell you what to do with nice pictures. On the Sage Oracle Touch (better than mine!) it actually adjusts the settings of the machine as it makes the coffee because it has the auto doser, auto milk etc. I don't think the other ones do that as they don't have auto dose/milk? They all have the same extraction technology, you are just paying for the optional extras. So if you go fo the cheaper option you will still be happy!
I have been researching machines for so long and finally purchased this one. I am all about Lattes so was hoping someone could help with settings for skim milk and what to set the tamp force at?
Hi. I feel there isn't really any difference between semi-skimmed and whole milk - Skimmed milk should be ok too. Just make sure you do not overheat it (keep the smile face on the setting) and you should just treat it as normal. I don't use skimmed milk but have once at work and we just treated it the same. TAMP setting - I would say at first, because its a new machine, keep it at what it is currently set to. Instead, adjust the grind size until you get the correct extraction. A simple guide would be about 7 seconds before anything starts to pour out the machine and then you should get a full shot within 30 seconds. As you are making lattes - you can get away with shots not being as perfect as if it was just an espresso. So best just to play around. All beans are different so it is difficult to suggest an exact pressure, grind etc
You don't have to do a double shot, there is a single basket which produces exactly 4oz of grinds compared to the 8oz double. Set the tamp pressure to 4 and for 5 seconds, then set the shot time to 30sec and weigh the coffee. Adjust the grind so you have a perfect 1:2 ratio eg: 4oz of grinds makes 8oz of espresso in 30 seconds. If you get too much coffee then make it grind finer, too little then go the other way. The perfect espresso is 4oz of grind to 8oz of espresso delivered in 30 seconds at 93c.
Cool, thanks for the info (and sorry for my late reply) I never got a single basket with Oracle, I researched when I first got it and saw a few articles stating that Sage were trying to create a single shot basket but because of the auto grind and tamp settings it was not that easy? However, you seem to have come up with a work around which I will give a go. I most likely have an old single shot basket around somewhere that I can use. Thanks
Hi, cool video :) You said you had a problem with not being able to make latte art? Make sure you steam your milk right after you brewed your shot. If you manually texture the milk yourself (Plenty of videos on youtube how to) then you should get a much better outcome. If your steam wand is a pannarello you can not do latte art as the wand automatically introduces air into the milk for you, which leaves you with a really airy, bubbly froth. If you texture your milk correctly with a manual wand it should look like 'wet paint' and there should minimal air bubbles You should be able to tap them out). (There are images on google to see with your wand is pannarello or not) Hope this solved your problem! Tom
Hi!! Thanks for the tips!! I don't know why but I seem to struggle with this machine and the milk, I have used commercial machines and can produced good artwork with that steamed milk. No idea why I struggle with this one? Since its just a home thing I don't tend to care too much anyway! :-) THANKS FOR THE COMMENT
@@everythingandthekitchensink were you ever able to produce art more consistently? Any tips if so? I've been practicing with it lots, and can't make it happen.
Hey man, enjoyed your video, definitely gave me the information i needed. I currently have a Sage Barista Express and i have had it for just over three years and want to upgrade. Just trying to justify the cost at the moment continually going over it in my head, wouldn't go for the oracle touch as i think its not worth the extra money over the normal oracle! Have you had any issues with yours since you have had it for 2 years?
genuine_legend hi! Not had any issues really, but see next paragraph, I don’t use it as much as I used to though, for no other reason than I have a taste for filter coffee at the moment instead of espresso. The only issue I actually had was about 2 months after I had it! The grinder would cut out and stopped working, they came and fixed it straight away and after that I have never had an issue.
Just a question, how big is the shot glass you have? Is it 60mls for double shot and 30 for single as I heard on a TH-cam clip by Phil McKnight. Also you mentioned you can adjust the dosage time. Is this an advanced setting? And finally why are there so many settings for the grind, when the grinder can only be used for espresso as it always grinds and tamps and I assume all coffee beans require the same grind to get the correct extraction. And thanks for the vid.
Hi! They are single shots, so I have to use both at the same time when making a standard double. I think in the video I used the single shot button? Adjusting the dosage time... I can't actually remember, I think its not an advance setting, just a normal menu setting. You find the pressure settings etc in the advanced bit. You have a point about the grind settings.... most espresso blends need to be fine grind so you not use the higher levels. I have noticed a big difference between beans though - especially if you get ones from the supermarket that have been on the shelve for a long time, they need to be finer, whereas fresher beans hold more oils etc and need less grinding. I think they just like to show off with the grind settings.... also I think its basically the same technology they use in the standalone grinder which is setup to grind beans for all types of coffee.
Hi great video. I’ve just had mine, and nothing goes through on 15 grind had to crank it up to 35. Yesterday it just kept saying pre infuse for 5 seconds and that’s it.
Robert Vincent hi, well it will be the coffee beans, are they too fresh? If it says roasted on you want to wait about 2 weeks later? 35 is very course grind for an espresso shot! So it must be a very oily bean? I guess as long as you are happy with the result I would not matter too much about it. Are you getting a full shot of coffee within 30 seconds? If yes stick with it! But look for different beans next time! If no, I would get different beans now and see what happens. I have always stuck with grind around 15 to 20 and set preinfusion to 7 seconds! Then the shot pours in 30 seconds to a double. You could always call them and ask for the white glove service! They call round and setup your machine and walk you through it all. It’s included in the price.
I think it depends on the upper burr setting. Mine is set to 6 and like you I grind at 35, 5 sec pre-infusion, tamp force set to 5 for 5 seconds. I get 55g in 30sec from the 22g basket. So, a 2.5 ratio which, for the beans I have, is perfect.
Great review. unfortunately I can only buy beans from roasteries or supermarkets. hope the machine will still make me better coffee than coffee shops. We don't branded coffee shops only local ones
It should do! Just try and get a grind rare low enough so one double shot takes about 30 seconds to pour and nothing comes out until about 7/8 seconds after pressing the start button. Can you get it mail order??
@@everythingandthekitchensink I can't thanks to the sanctions on my country. when it comes to beans i can buy from local roasteries and Starbucks beans from time to time. my oracle will arrive on the 1st of November. Super excited to have my very first semi-automatic espresso machine. delonghi dinamica super auto machine is a pain to deal with
Chris Swallow I have never looked but I guess they will have their own normal coffee beans that have sat around for months... but they also have hand roasted blends that must be more fresher?
@@chrisswallow3734 i spoke to modern standard coffee and they said sainsburys have told them that they cant put the roasted on date as customers think thats the use by date and say its out of date.
Great video. Thanks! Just one point to add, I purchased this machine recently and it DID come supplied with a single shot filter basket in addition to the double shot basket. Perhaps this is a change made since you purchased your machine? That said, the White Goves person did not recommend using it because he said it needs to be fine tuned with it's own settings and it's better to use the double shot basket and just use the single shot extraction button, which is what he said professionals do. He may be right but it seems wasteful to me and I am happily using the single shot basket when making just a single cup of cappucino.
Oh wow thanks for the update. I did read a few years back that they were looking into a single dose basket but had issues with settings etc. I wonder if they have it as a spare on their site now to purchase?
@@everythingandthekitchensink Could you give me any recommendations on a good website to buy coffee in the UK? I was considering in importing Kona from Hawaii, but due to the expense, I probably won't do this too often.

Does anyone know if the features on this machine are the same as the touch version, except the touch feature of course. I know that the touch version allows you to edit and save all manner of milky drinks but if you predominately drink espresso and/or Americano then there seem to be very little reason to pay a lot more for the touch version?
I would say so. I have the touch version for a year now at home and the non-touch at work for some months now. the only thing you can program on the touch ist the time of extraction, the time of hot water for the americano and the milk temperature/consistence. and it's easier to change the extraction time. but on the non-touch version you can still program the extraction time of two espressos and the hot water ratio for three different americanos i think. and you only have to push one button for an espresso and don't have to swipe through a menu... so if you don't have to change the extraction time and the milk consistency often i would recommend the non touch version. maybe my recommendation would be different if you could save temperature and grind size for different beans but you can't:-(
Coffee beans in a high turnover supermarket do not sit on the shelf for months this is complete rubbish, fresh roasted beans totally correct but misleading info on the process of a beans through supermarket supply process.
Even with high turn over they may still have been on the shelves for months. The fact they dont say the roasted date is the issue, they could have been roasted in bulk and supplied to the supermarket at a much later date (not the fault of the supermarket) but certainly they wont be at their best quality.
In this feed I keep saying ROAST BY DATE.... sorry!! No idea where that comes from! I should be saying ROASTED ON DATE!!

No idea why I struggle with this one? Since its just a home thing I don't tend to care too much anyway! :-) THANKS FOR THE COMMENT
@@everythingandthekitchensink no problem! Your videos are quite cool!
@@everythingandthekitchensink were you ever able to produce art more consistently? Any tips if so? I've been practicing with it lots, and can't make it happen.
Thank you very much for the lovely explanation 👍😀
My pleasure 😊
The oracle touch seems to be your paying an extra $500 for a touch screen and everything else is same.
Great informative video - thanks very much.
Super excited to have my very first semi-automatic espresso machine.
delonghi dinamica super auto machine is a pain to deal with
Waitrose and Sainsbury’s both sell coffee beans that are hand roasted with there roasted on dates also telling you who roasted them.
Jonathan Williams thanks! They must be catching on to the fact people want good beans! I will go take a look.
Just looked at Sainsbury and the brewed on dates were 3 months ago.
@@everythingandthekitchensink Breville Australia have it listed for sale on their web site at $A10.32. About 6 GBP I think.
@@robmorris868 THANKS!
Is it not a conical grinder not burr?
Its a conical burr grinder
Great video thanks 👍🏆
Awesome review. I'm sure I will go for this machine and not the Touch.
Its a little cheaper and just as good
@@everythingandthekitchensink Could you give me any recommendations on a good website to buy coffee in the UK? I was considering in importing Kona from Hawaii, but due to the expense, I probably won't do this too often.
@@barrymurphy4812 hi, I tend to get mine from my local independent coffee shop www.thespecialtycoffeeshop.com are based in Nottingham but delivery anywhere in the uk. Also, cheaper but still good is 200 degree coffees ‘ Brazilian love affair ‘ again can be ordered online.
@@everythingandthekitchensink I really appreciate the recommendation 😊👍
I buy wholesale from independent local in Reading: Kingdom Coffee, they also sell online.
There £1449 to £1800 now, so no longer £1100 sadly good video for people.
Can you grind coffee just for a single shot?
Oh you just answered that sorry! Great video thanks.
I have the touch version for a year now at home and the non-touch at work for some months now. the only thing you can program on the touch ist the time of extraction, the time of hot water for the americano and the milk temperature/consistence. and it's easier to change the extraction time.
but on the non-touch version you can still program the extraction time of two espressos and the hot water ratio for three different americanos i think. and you only have to push one button for an espresso and don't have to swipe through a menu...
so if you don't have to change the extraction time and the milk consistency often i would recommend the non touch version. maybe my recommendation would be different if you could save temperature and grind size for different beans but you can't:-(
Best review
I suppose it's how easy you've accrued money, if you've had to work hard at a difficult job it would be hard to wave goodbye to all that money.
