Uh this is the 10th Doctor from between his first meeting with Donna and the first episode of series 3. He marries Elizabeth 1 in Day of the Doctor and doesn't remember doing it which is why she ordered him executed in the Shakespeare episode of series 3. Sure it's a nice reference but the Tenth here hasn't met River yet and won't remember the events if this special so won't recognise her catchphrase.
@@ethantombs2608 Actually no... This is him between The Waters of Mars and The End of Time. He rocks up on the Ood planet saying he detoured and talked about what he did with "Queen Bess". The lack of companion also accounts for that.
It's scary how Matt's eyes depict so much pain and great age... such a veteran... he's seen more than the others... Matt's eyes are so OLD... compared to John's and David's... And considering that he's the youngest actor to play the Doctor is just... wow.
I too meant acting! Matt's eyes can't convey HALF of what Peter Capaldi or John Hurt's eyes can convey. Peter Capaldi has astonished me with all the things he can say with only his eyes. The looks he gives to Clara or to River are amazing: you don't need any dialogue at all
For me David wore all of that on his sleeve. He plays the Doctor that wants it to all be over. Matt played the one who wanted to forget because it was too horrible
I always thought of him as The Man Who Hates. He hates the Daleks for what they did, he hates himself for what he did, and he has a tendency to hate others for what they do (just look at his attitude toward the humans in Dalek and Bad Wolf, his treatment of Cassandra in The End of The World, and his general attitude toward the Slitheen)- yeah they deserve it, but its clear that the Doctor is restraining a deep-seated hatred of anyone who is willing to kill or sacrifice others because it's the same thing he did as War. He tries harder than any of the other Doctors to hide it, to be a good person, because he isn't- he's scarred and only time (and regeneration) can heal those wounds.
I like how they imply how well the Doctor knows himself, because for all of 10's rage, he still shuts up and looks horrified when 11 says "No, you really wouldn't."
10 didn't know 11. He doesn't understand that the 11th doctor is primarily characterized by denial. Honestly, I used to buy his whole "I forgot" shtick until I re-watched this scene. "The Doctor Lies..."
Because as much as he hates himself for it, he wants to forget. He can't accept the fact that it only took him 400 years to forget but he also can't accept that after 400 years he would still remember.
0:54 10 raises his voice to show authority and anger but then 11 raises his voice and that's when you feel the real fury. That's when you can feel that anger and pain surfacing. So much that 10 goes quiet, almost afraid.
In the new rewrite by Moffat of the story 10 gets so angry at 11 in the cell that he throws him across the room. That.....doesn't sound like fear to me
I don't feel like it's fear of him but fear of his future because 10 had so much pain and loss during his time as the doctor I don't think he could imagine anything worse in his future. I feel like he's more disgusted at 11 for supposedly forgetting when he didn't like he can't recognise himself in the man in front of him. Irony when you think about what 10 says to Wilfred "I die and some new man walks away"
No he was vengeful, 11 was downright sadistic. He seemed to enjoy those moments of cruelty, while ten seemed to feel sad when he had to do it. As much of the anger when he did those things were directed at himself as the poor fool he wasn't going to give a second chance. 11 was in many ways like a child and seemed to be cruel in the way of a child from time to time.
0:54 I love seeing the 10th doctor clearly angry with his voice raised while the 11th doctor is remaining quiet, but once the 11th doctor raises his voice you really can feel the fury of a timelord and the 10th doctor knows it by going silent.
I am 32 years old, and I can honestly say I have had different lives, I am not the same person as I was when I was 22, and that person was different from 15. We all 'regenereate' trough life and at this moment in life. I find that fascinating, can't promise I'll feel that way tommorow ;)
1:02 11 shows his inner vale yard. he's basically saying to 10 "I'm _much_ more dangerous now than I was back then..." 10 actually looks scared of himself here. Brilliant acting.
inglouser I personally think Matt was better, David was so good and did great but i just feel like Matt's rendition was the realist doctor, the goofyness trying to cover up so much anger and sadness is just perfect seeing as what he has gone through
Love that you can clearly see in his eyes that he CHOSE to forget. He's seen where he's dying, he's in a room with the man he despises most. Of course he's going to go into lockdown
This scene really exemplifies how great the 12th Doctor's Zygon speech was. The War Doctor was the person who pushed the button, fired that first shot, and felt all the justification for doing so.
It's interesting how the timelord really shifted the doctor through all of their regenerations to the current one. 9 being haunted by the timelord tries to fit in on earth and dies having finally found some sort of peace. But the person that gave him that peace was someone that needed the next regeneration to be more emotional and show their heart on their sleeves. 10 was someone that counted the kids that died during the timewar. His evolution to a more daring and lost doctor was because of all the people he lost along the way. His final moments was in seeing who he lost and then changing alone so when 11 was introduced as more out there doctor it seemed he was at peace but what 11 had become was someone who no longer showed his heart on his sleeve, he hides it deep down inside, he lies to everyone and will act more charismatic even though inside he is still as broken as before. Of course when his past incarnation asks him how many died he knew it, but he didn't want him to know it. The main philosophy of 10 and 11 finally clash and we see them so opposed for the first time. The reason is because 11 is a direct consequence of 10's lifestyle. He was so open that it ended up killing him which is why 11 is so guarded. It would take 11's long life in a town called Christmas that he was eventually able to find peace in a place that was a warzone. He was ready to die at peace but knowing the war is never over he knew 12 was needed. The Daleks wouldn't stop coming, 12 is a lot more straight to the point character willing to be angry and scoff off people without caring how they felt. This was a necessary healing point so that when he eventually dies he isn't leaving with anger about the timelord anymore, a doctor like him and the ones before him are outdated, they were necessary for a war but he was ready to become more fun and adventurous which is why 13 exists,
The Moment: "Go on, ask them. Ask them what you need to know. War: "Did you ever count?" 11: "Count what? " War: "How many children there were on Gallifrey that day." 11: "I've absolutely no idea." War: "How old are you now?" 11: "Oh, I don't know, I lose track; 1,200 and something I think, unless I'm lying. I can't remember if I'm lying about my age- that's how old I am." War: "400 years older than me, and in all that time you never even wondered how many there were? You never once counted?" 11: "Tell me, what would be the point?" 10: "2.47 billion." War: "You did count!" 10: "You forgot? 400 years- is that all it takes?!" 11: "I moved on." 10: "Where? Where could you be now that you can forget something like that?!" 11: "Spoilers." 10: "No, no no no. For once I would like to know where I'm going." 11: "No, you really wouldn't." War: "I don't know who you are- either of you. I haven't got the faintest idea." The Moment: "They're you. They're what you become if you destroy Gallifrey. The man who regrets, and the man who forgets. The Moment is coming, the Moment is me. You have to decide." War: "No." 10: "No?" War: "Just, no."
I think this scene symbolizes what goes on inside The Doctor's mind. The set is his mind scenery, and that tells us he's in a prison he put himself in. Him arguing with himself is how he deals with his past and keep his sanity. Deep scene and watching David and Matt arguing is a total treat to watch. ♥️♥️♥️
9: The Man Who Resents 10: The Man Who Regrets 11: The Man Who Forgets 12: The Man Who Repents 13: uhhhh..... The Woman Who Has A Yorkshire Accent? I don’t know XD
How? Developed characters Good acting Deep backstories The main character talking to his past and/or future selves (Attractive cast) Good music Darker side
I dunno, 9's first scene with a Dalek REALLY made me want to watch the old show to see how this character is driven to such murderous rage by these things alone.
That painful, bitter laugh of Eleven's at the end is heartbreaking. Rule One went from "Don't wander off" to "The Doctor lies" with this regeneration. In order to survive after first losing Gallifrey and his people, and then losing Rose, the person who'd patched him back together and made him want to live again, he started lying to himself most of all. He tells himself he doesn't remember, that he's moved on, that it doesn't matter, all the time very aware that he is lying, but what else can he do? All that regret and grief nearly made him a monster when he was Ten and Donna's Turn Left experience told him what happens if he kills himself.
It’s crazy cuz this is like the 5th Tim I watched this and I somehow just realized that it’s just the doctor basically arguing with himself. Because each one is so distinct it’s hard to realize Ten isn’t pissed at Eleven so much as he’s just pissed at himself because he knows that he eventually forgets.
This is why I love Matt at much. He shows so much emotion and depth in his face and voice that you forget that he's really not a veteran actor like Hurt and Tennant.
From Death of the Doctor episode of the Sarah Jane Adventures, 11 himself said to Jo: "JO: So you've been watching me all this time? DOCTOR: No. Because you're right, I don't look back. I can't. But the last time I was dying, I looked back on all of you. Every single one. And I was so proud." 10 looked back on ALL past companions, not just the ones shown while he was "dying" for fear that 11 wouldn't and he was right because as 11 says "I don't look back" Could be why he "forgot" the number of children while 10 was appalled that he would forget such a thing and knew the exact number.
Big Finish has finally released "The Time War" audio dramas with the 8th Doctor (Paul McGann) and it is doing such a good job of fleshing all of this out! Makes it much more poignant. I definitely want to go back and watch all of these episodes after finishing The Time War. You really get a sense of the grief that the 8th Doctor deals with facing (and running) from the Time War and why he finally decides he just can't run anymore. Major props to Paul McGann and the writing team of the Big Finish audio dramas for doing such a great job with these. I HIGHLY recommend giving them a listen.
For me, this scene is what always cements the idea that all the Doctors in New Who have been go in through the seven stages of grief the whole time. Anger, denial, bargaining, ect. Up until the end of Capadelli's run where he gets to acceptance.
11 didn't forget. He just doesn't want to remember. He doesn't want to admit it and say it out loud. You can tell from his face that he knows. It just hurts too much to say.
At the beginning of the movie, he’s with Clara right before the Series 7 finale. You can tell because the Doctor tells Clara he’s planning on going to Trenzalore.
I get it now. He HAD to forget. Every day, waking up, remembering it all, feeling the grief he felt for what he'd done and the anger he had towards himself for letting it all happen??? I understand. It was killing him inside. So he had to forget. It was the only way he knew how to keep moving forward. At least, in the end, he remembered SOME of it, cause you can't forget something entirely, that's just not feasible. Just the parts that hurt the most will do
I would have loved an episode with the last 4 doctors :'( . I'm pretty sure 12 would be pissed and really rude with 10 and 11, who in return would tease him, and 9 would be there thinking "where did I get myself into?!"
I think 11 did forget, the pain you see in him isn't the pain of remembering and then dodging the question. It's the pain of realising that he forgat something so important because of what he became.
MegaCoolguy52 or I've watched 50 years of the show and Ten stands out as the least 'Doctor' in the entire run of the show. A whining human who falls in love with teenagers. I'm sorry you're so easily pleased
Yeah the whole Rose love story was perhaps a but out there but other than that I really liked Tennant. You could interpret it as the doctor not wanting to be timelord any more. So he regenerated as human as he could.
I always liked how angry David tenant was he is like anikan skywalker so powerful but is just lost in himself and doesn’t know where to go so it turns to hate
I think when Eleven refers to 'worse things', he's talking about Trenzalore. Ten doesn't know about Trenzalore and if he does, he has no idea what will happen.
I always got the impression that 11 knew the answer, he's dodging the question.

@@ethantombs2608 nah
I love how 11 laughed like there was any other choice back when he made his decision through his previous incarnations.
His previous incarnation. So every doctor has had their own incarnation?
It's scary how Matt's eyes depict so much pain and great age... such a veteran... he's seen more than the others... Matt's eyes are so OLD... compared to John's and David's...
And considering that he's the youngest actor to play the Doctor is just... wow.
I think you are seeing what you WANT to see. Matt's eyes are not old, thay can't even compare to John's eyes
I think she meant in the acting. Matt can pass that feeling of and older version
Smith's always been extraordinarily good at flipping between peppy youngster and wise but angry old head.
10th Doctor: The Man Who Regrets.
11th Doctor: The Man Who Forgets.
What would be the 9th Doctor? The Man Who Mourns?
The man who hates doctor who and doesn't want to come back to the show
Look at it as the stages of mourning: Anger, denial, bargaining, acceptance. Kinda fits 9 through 12 if you ask me
I always thought of him as The Man Who Hates.
The Man Who Resents, while 12th is the Man Who Repents. I have no clue on what the War Doctor would be.
I like that for 12. The man who repents. That's good.
I like how they imply how well the Doctor knows himself, because for all of 10's rage, he still shuts up and looks horrified when 11 says "No, you really wouldn't."
why did 10 assume that he forgotten rather than lied
10 didn't know 11. He doesn't understand that the 11th doctor is primarily characterized by denial. Honestly, I used to buy his whole "I forgot" shtick until I re-watched this scene. "The Doctor Lies..."
Kind of makes you think the 10th had a good reason for not wanting to regenerate. "Everything I am dies. Some new man goes sauntering away."
i wonder this a lot. but that's 10 for you, pretty quick to rain the judgement down. most especially on himself.
Because as much as he hates himself for it, he wants to forget. He can't accept the fact that it only took him 400 years to forget but he also can't accept that after 400 years he would still remember.
10 is an idiot
Matt was really good at playing the whole "Old man in a young body" thing.
That.....doesn't sound like fear to me
Terri S where can I see this?
I don't feel like it's fear of him but fear of his future because 10 had so much pain and loss during his time as the doctor I don't think he could imagine anything worse in his future. I feel like he's more disgusted at 11 for supposedly forgetting when he didn't like he can't recognise himself in the man in front of him. Irony when you think about what 10 says to Wilfred "I die and some new man walks away"
THIS! THIS RIGHT HERE IS WHY I THINK MATT SMITH WAS UNDER APPRECIATED AS A DOCTOR
Yes! This and the scene in which Clara tells him he has to go to Trenzalore!
Was he? I mean he was really good at times but he could also be a bit to sadistic for my tastes.
Smith
@Str8Murder I agree entirely.
i have been searching for the answer for this question for far too long, thank you
'The man who regrets and the man who forgets'
fav line
10 - "2.47 billion"
11's face - he had the whole flashback and heard all the screams in that millisecond.
0:54 I love seeing the 10th doctor clearly angry with his voice raised while the 11th doctor is remaining quiet, but once the 11th doctor raises his voice you really can feel the fury of a timelord and the 10th doctor knows it by going silent.
I think his childish persona is an act, with how much he hates, and how angry he gets at times.
I really just realized that the Doctor is fighting with himself in this scene
I am 32 years old, and I can honestly say I have had different lives, I am not the same person as I was when I was 22, and that person was different from 15. We all 'regenereate' trough life and at this moment in life. I find that fascinating, can't promise I'll feel that way tommorow ;)
Even with the other doctors, it still feels like a Tennant ep!
It's a multi-doctor story, ten is not the only doctor, there are many which are actually better than him
Galactic yo yo um 4 8 and 12. That's hardly a huge amount
You forgot 1,2,3,5,6,7,9 and 11
Naa to me it feels like a Matt ep
10 is pretty forgettable but does a decent job here.
Hitler: I killed the most
Stalin: No I did
The Doctor: Amateurs
Fear me, i have killed dozens of time lords. Fear me, I killed them all.
"Look up 'The Doctor'... ...under 'Cause of Death'."

11 shows his inner vale yard. he's basically saying to 10
"I'm _much_ more dangerous now than I was back then..."
10 actually looks scared of himself here.
Brilliant acting.
In the novel ten punches him in the face so his not scared of him
The novel is not canon.
0:22 look at his face. Phenomenal acting by David 👌 clearly he embodied the doctor without a doubt.
inglouser I personally think Matt was better, David was so good and did great but i just feel like Matt's rendition was the realist doctor, the goofyness trying to cover up so much anger and sadness is just perfect seeing as what he has gone through
@@Adamgarv personally I think Capaldi was better he could look Matt Smith dead in the eyes and Matt Smith would turn into a salamander
The House Of Banter what
@@Adamgarv I know 😇
The House Of Banter no, that doesnt make sense. Capaldi was a terrible doctor
Love that you can clearly see in his eyes that he CHOSE to forget. He's seen where he's dying, he's in a room with the man he despises most. Of course he's going to go into lockdown
"What would be the point?"
"Two *point* four billion!"
The only person who could leave the doctor speechless is himself
Its a hard scene but honestly its unfortunate that they'll all soon forget this moment
Count Olaf Well 11 won't, so it stays with the Doctor in the end.
This scene really exemplifies how great the 12th Doctor's Zygon speech was. The War Doctor was the person who pushed the button, fired that first shot, and felt all the justification for doing so.
Yup
It's moments like these that remind me Eleven wasn't twenty-something. He was an old, tired god.
Matt and David arguing..... Hell yea where the popcorn at?
This was a necessary healing point so that when he eventually dies he isn't leaving with anger about the timelord anymore, a doctor like him and the ones before him are outdated, they were necessary for a war but he was ready to become more fun and adventurous which is why 13 exists,
11 is like every depressed teen now. He hides the pain in memes
Billie was honestly such a treat in this. I love, love, love her acting!
I find I'm very glad that Smith's laugh at the end was cut off in this video. It's terrifying
Such a beautiful scene. Rest in Peace John Hurt, the best war Doctor there could be.
I get that Eccleston wasn't interested, so why didn't they use McGann instead of retconning in a new Doctor?
oof. 11's laugh at the end there always gets me. Its so bitter...
The Moment: "Go on, ask them. Ask them what you need to know.
War: "Did you ever count?"
11: "Count what? "
War: "How many children there were on Gallifrey that day."
11: "I've absolutely no idea."
War: "How old are you now?"
11: "Oh, I don't know, I lose track; 1,200 and something I think, unless I'm lying. I can't remember if I'm lying about my age- that's how old I am."
War: "400 years older than me, and in all that time you never even wondered how many there were? You never once counted?"
11: "Tell me, what would be the point?"
10: "2.47 billion."
War: "You did count!"
10: "You forgot? 400 years- is that all it takes?!"
11: "I moved on."
10: "Where? Where could you be now that you can forget something like that?!"
11: "Spoilers."
10: "No, no no no. For once I would like to know where I'm going."
11: "No, you really wouldn't."
War: "I don't know who you are- either of you. I haven't got the faintest idea."
The Moment: "They're you. They're what you become if you destroy Gallifrey. The man who regrets, and the man who forgets. The Moment is coming, the Moment is me. You have to decide."
War: "No."
10: "No?"
War: "Just, no."
Syliphen 5
Thank-you.
For what?
Syliphen 5
For writing the transcript. I wanted to recreate this scene.
No problem! :)
Syliphen 5 why do people like you were out the dialogue it's bloody pointless
David Tennent best doctor
Feels really good to see a character that can finally stand up to 10s confrontational wrath.
The difference between 400 years of guilt and shame.
I love how different each persona of the Doctor is, and how they interact when they meet
“For once I’d like to know where I’m going”
“No you really wouldn’t”
that makeup and expression on billie makes her look so much wiser than in the first episode with 9
I love the “spoilers” line 😂
And how that pisses off 10.
You can tell Ten's frustrated when Eleven says "spoilers," and you know why.
War - The Man Who Did It
10th - The Man Who Regrets
11th - The Man Who Forgot
12th - The Man Who Accepts
13 - The Woman
8th - The Man Who Failed To Save Many
9th - The Man Who Mourned
01:01 “I’m going to quote my wife while I’m arguing with myself.” - Eleven
I think this scene symbolizes what goes on inside The Doctor's mind. The set is his mind scenery, and that tells us he's in a prison he put himself in. Him arguing with himself is how he deals with his past and keep his sanity. Deep scene and watching David and Matt arguing is a total treat to watch. ♥️♥️♥️
9: The Man Who Resents
10: The Man Who Regrets
11: The Man Who Forgets
12: The Man Who Repents
13: uhhhh..... The Woman Who Has A Yorkshire Accent? I don’t know XD
The woman who moves on
(breaks the rhyme scheme but it's true)
This one scene would get someone into watching Doctor Who.
How?
Developed characters
Good acting
Deep backstories
The main character talking to his past and/or future selves
(Attractive cast)
Good music
Darker side
I dunno, 9's first scene with a Dalek REALLY made me want to watch the old show to see how this character is driven to such murderous rage by these things alone.
Jon Ericson for me it was watching a clip of the 11th whacking an "Ironside"
Now THIS is Doctor Who
That painful, bitter laugh of Eleven's at the end is heartbreaking.
10 and 11 interacting is the best thing ever because they're so different yet so similar. But 10 and 12 would've great.
This is why I love Matt at much. He shows so much emotion and depth in his face and voice that you forget that he's really not a veteran actor like Hurt and Tennant.
From Death of the Doctor episode of the Sarah Jane Adventures, 11 himself said to Jo:
"JO: So you've been watching me all this time?
DOCTOR: No. Because you're right, I don't look back. I can't. But the last time I was dying, I looked back on all of you. Every single one. And I was so proud."
10 looked back on ALL past companions, not just the ones shown while he was "dying" for fear that 11 wouldn't and he was right because as 11 says "I don't look back" Could be why he "forgot" the number of children while 10 was appalled that he would forget such a thing and knew the exact number.
I still love how 11 pulled Rivers line against 10 when mentioning 10s future
dafuq is going on with the image? It's like moving around and like there's some tiny content aware scaling.
Mercure250 Maybe to get around TH-cam's ContentID system. It gets pretty ruthless.
Mercure250 The uploader enabled TH-cam's automatic stabilisation for god knows what reason.
Seems more like that yeah
Big Finish has finally released "The Time War" audio dramas with the 8th Doctor (Paul McGann) and it is doing such a good job of fleshing all of this out! Makes it much more poignant. I definitely want to go back and watch all of these episodes after finishing The Time War. You really get a sense of the grief that the 8th Doctor deals with facing (and running) from the Time War and why he finally decides he just can't run anymore. Major props to Paul McGann and the writing team of the Big Finish audio dramas for doing such a great job with these. I HIGHLY recommend giving them a listen.
big finish also did 4 stories with john hurt as the war doctor, go look them up!!
John Hurt, killed by aliens, only to become one of the most famous aliens of all time.
For me, this scene is what always cements the idea that all the Doctors in New Who have been go in through the seven stages of grief the whole time. Anger, denial, bargaining, ect. Up until the end of Capadelli's run where he gets to acceptance.
9 - Reject
10 - Regrets
11 - Forgets
12 - Accepts
13 - "Oh, brilliant!"
To hell with the last one. That's not the Doctor at all.
@@tomnorton4277 yeah she really wasn't
I love how literally every scene in this episode is important
Every scene has a point to it.
Ian Mckellen should play the war doctor if they make another anniversary.
Ian was considered for the role of the War Doctor
It fucking breaks my heart when War Doctor is ashamed of who he’ll become, “I don’t know who you are, both of you”
So I hear the latest season invalidates all of this?
11 didn't forget. He just doesn't want to remember. He doesn't want to admit it and say it out loud. You can tell from his face that he knows. It just hurts too much to say.
9th Doctor - the man who begets.
10th Doctor - the man who regrets.
11th Doctor - the man who forgets.
12th Doctor - the man who accepts.
At the time of Day of the Doctor, 11 has been alone, after Amy and Rory, for 200 years. And he still has 800 years until he gets another companion
At the beginning of the movie, he’s with Clara right before the Series 7 finale. You can tell because the Doctor tells Clara he’s planning on going to Trenzalore.
When 10 said 2.74 billion...... my blood ran cold..... to take the lives of so many children
Just the parts that hurt the most will do
God I love the chemistry between 10 and 11.
The pain in Eleven's eyes actually hurts to look at.
"Did you ever count?"
"Count what?"
"The amount of pixels in this video"
Three of them in a room...and none of them bothered to check and see if the door was unlocked.
1:15 They've had hundreds of years to live with what they've done... What you did. You would dare to judge them?
Somewhere Anakin Skywalker is saying "2.47 billion??!!...suddenly a room full of younglings ain't looking so bad is it??"...
God I miss Tennant!
Kathy Palmer I don't, I just skip his awful series when I do a rewatch
If you think ten was bad then I feel sorry for you. Such awful taste.
Tennant was so much better than Smith. Smith always came off as a bow-tie wearing weakling who doesn't get enough sunlight.
I always liked how angry David tenant was he is like anikan skywalker so powerful but is just lost in himself and doesn’t know where to go so it turns to hate
So many feels 😢
I think when Eleven refers to 'worse things', he's talking about Trenzalore. Ten doesn't know about Trenzalore and if he does, he has no idea what will happen.
You know, I always wondered what would happen if 10' saw Rose instead of the war doctor
This scene gives me the chills for some reason😢
Originally it was supposed to be the ninth, tenth, and eleventh in this special but the actor of the ninth doctor said no
This great scene got its power when Rose says "They are you!"
