The real reason why the clashes started is because Director K.Balachander, who produced Roja, didn't go to Ilayaraja and chose ARR instead. Up until then, all of Manirathnam's movies were composed by Ilayaraja, and Roja was the first movie where he was replaced. The fact that Ilayaraja was replaced by a kid hurt his ego so much that he still keeps berating ARR every chance he gets.
For Annamalai movie, KB choose Deva for music.. Because due to the Raaja's arrogance and problem with KB

His music touches hearts , soothes our soul.
His music is evergreen and tied to human emotion.
His music lifetime = lifetime of human emotions.
He is able to compose NATTUPURA PADAL in minutes other music directors can't.
People : He has done 100s of films for free of cost and to maintain the economy of tamil film culture.
Imagine single film running on one mans stardom and gets hit with flop story and amature actors
he has done that a lot of times, carried the whole weight of the film with just music.
He got the Royalties from SPB and others just to feed hundreds of musicians working under him, he gives them
salary.
He gives funds in any disaster and is a religious person by heart.
Don't forget all this, he has gotten old now people can''t control emotions when they are old. Media and youtube wants to get views in his name. They spread his negative points because nothing spreads more than negativity.

Like Ramanujan and George Soros, Ilayaraja is an impossible composer. I like Rahman and credit him a score of 98 and of late his compositions are not so great as in the 90s. On the Contrary I would give a rating of 10,000 to Ilayaraja as he has out performed all his predecessors and will never be belittled in the next 500 years. You will not believe me if I tell you that it takes me more than 6 months to stop listening to his melodies. I feel enriched by his music and will listen to him all my life. The minute nuances in his compositions, no one can gauge. If he's Raja, Janaki is the Rani. An extraordinary singer. Janaki is a jewel in the crown of Raja.

The reason why ARR songs during 90s sounded so good was because Ilayaraja was so bad and low expectation from audience. He managed with same set of singers and with tabla.
