For lower anterior PA's, I've always placed the sensor or film on the tongue to add comfort. The X-ray goes right through the tongue so more comfort, less obstruction. Unless you have people with a gag reflux, then it gets challenging!

We switched to digital sensors back in January and the rep that came to show us our new system mentioned the same thing about inserting at the midline. We also switched away from sticky tab holders to a universal clamp style holder and the PA’s come out so much better now with getting the entire apex. Also I tip I learned awhile back was with patients who find anterior PA’s uncomfortable or who maybe have a really shallow pallet is to place a cotton roll between their teeth and the XCP arm. This makes taking anteriors much more comfortable for the patient.

Super helpful stuff here! I should really have a easier time if I start placing the sensor in the middle of the patient's mouth.
Here are some tips I use:
    1. You can tell that the sensor is in placed correctly by looking for how the ring relates to the patients cheek. (posterior, anterior, ect.)
    2. Get the margins of any crowns when taking bite-wings. This goes hand in hand with getting the bone in frame, but sometimes bone loss makes getting the bone extra tricky without a PA. Just focus on the crown margins in this scenario.
    3. Understand what went wrong with bad pictures so that retaking a image is easier in the second attempt.
    4. Don't be a perfectionist, just get what you need. The patient doesn't want 40 x-ray attempts. While taking perfect X-rays should be our aim, sometimes the patients anatomy limits how good our images turn out. Not everyone has perfectly strait teeth, and sometimes one image doesn't show everything. Learn to compensate and capture everything in other images you're taking that day.

We don’t use rings in my office so we just have the digital sensors. I’m wondering if I should be envisioning the sensor and aiming straight towards it or if there is another technique?

Update: so I pretty much got the hang of it now. You have to aim towards the sensor but angle towards what you’re trying to capture like the roots for a pa or the occlusal plane for bitewings. Just ask your fellow assistants for tips on angulation and you should learn quickly.

we put barriers on everything we can (and switch the plastic to new ones for each patient)! and we also use a disinfectant on everything else that was touched after as well! here's my sterilization/disinfection/sanitization video -- hope this helps: th-cam.com/video/MbEmFGIkoZU/w-d-xo.html

Absolutely painful. Not uncomfortable...painful. Big, bulky, hard plastic with sharp corners, jammed into your mouth and THEN you're told to bite down.
I couldn't do it--it was cutting into the underside of my palette and the opposite side of my mandible.
I've never had a problem with the cardboard bite wing x-rays,
This was WAY too big and painful.
How about they find something less like a 16th century instrument of torture, and more like a high tech, sleek, comfortable x-ray apparatus?
    Small,flexible, and forgiving.

Bro everyone sitting here talking about dental hygiene as she puts this thing that’s been in ten other mouths in his . Like shudnt that thing ur putting in his mouth have a bag over it ? I know some of it does but like I just watched that yeollow price and another peice press up against his lips and that seems really unsanitary .... I went to the dentist today and they did the same thing I’m pretty sure none of that shud be having any contact with ur mouth or face and shud be covered as u put it in 100 mouths a day . Like I don’t want a bunch of poeple fucking germs in my mouth that’s discusting the way that thing was pressed up against this guys face I garuntee it was done to the last guy to like wtf

the plastic piece that goes in your mouth is disposable (1 time use). and the metal piece gets sterilized in the autoclave. dental offices take infection control seriously and practice under the standard of care. hope this helps!
