Many years ago an old aborigine mate taught me how to catch Muddies by hand in the mud. That was just south of Carnarvon WA. He used a length of thin rod to poke down the holes till he heard a crab scrape. He made me shove my arm a long way into the hole and turn the crab till I had the back to me then dragged it out. This was before limits but my mate still would not let me keep the 'Girls' as he called them. He said it was 'rude', the word for taboo. But in those days large males were plentiful and we would catch a dozen or more in less than an hour. Then it was time to set the rabbit traps. Go back to the traps in an hour. Dad would complain if we didn't bring a turtle back too...his favourite tucker. That fed the camp of 6 to8 people daily cos we tired of fish sometimes as they were too easy to catch. This was in 1960 to '80 something.
It’s always good to teach and take the little ones, as the old saying goes “give a man a fish and he”lol eat for a day, teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime”

In the Northern Hemisphere, the winter months are great for crabs so perhaps that is where the saying comes from as it would be there spring / summer during our May / June / July / August...keep the vids coming
