    It is like living in any historic preservation district/neighborhood - in the case France, the entire country is basically historically significant. Hire a local lawyer and architect.

      I've talked with the mayor and he says it depends on The scope of work on the exterior that needs to be done. Will definitely do things carefully and through the proper channels!

    In France, your beautiful future property is not called a chateau but a "maison de maitre". The upkeep costs will be much smaller than for a chateau. With the abbey footage, I found out the village name easily. Only 847 inhabitants, the life will be very quiet there. The population is decreasing because the economy is not very good (the only factory has only 28 workers left). I'm sure that the local school will be happy to get new students.
    If I were to immigrate abroad, I would be scared to buy a property before having secured a long stay visa. I hope this will go well for your family.
    Welcome To France !

      @LetsBuyAChateau  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are correct, it is not an official chateau. I haven't made an announcement yet about it. In particular, trying to keep some of the details private while the current owner is still living there.
      To carry out our plan, we had to buy a property first! This will make life easier for us, indeed.

      @@LetsBuyAChateau Not only do I live in France, but I happen to be French. I find interesting to follow the reactions of non economic migrants who come to France because they like the country and the culture. A lot of grumpy French people should see that because as the saying tells : "France is a paradise populated by people convinced they're living in hell."

    Great news ! Congrats ! Just subscribed after viewing one of your uploads. I’m a fan of renovations… I’ve done it in two homes. Neither was a “Maison du Maître” however 😂
    Highly impressed by your irrepressible youthful vigour. Cool.
    Had no idea that the property had such “provenance” as they say. We’re talking about the 1500s Wow! As Bugs Bunny would declare: “The joint looks special!”
    Will be following “zee French aventure”.
    My family arrived from France to Atlantic Canada way, way back in the early 1700s long before it was called Canada. We were deported by the Brits in 1755 …. 12,000 perished…and some came back including my ancestors. So here we are in 2024 and I’m looking forward to your adventure. Thanks for taking us along.

    CONGRATS on your sale and purchase. Where will you live between the move? How did you manage to get a VISA to live there? I hear you cannot go there for work? And you have to have proof of money to support yourselves. You are living my dream. Hopefully one day it will happen. Something about France just draws me like a moth to a flame. The architecture, rich history and culture. And even though l have lived in 3 other European countries briefly and speak 2 of the languages pretty well, l will just have to brush up on my high school French and get my family on board when my hubby retires.

    The Monument Historic group you need permission for on everything exterior is basically for the side that is closest to the historic Abbey...meaning you will find it easiest to install a pool on the other side of your house!!!! They usually take a year for a response, sometimes 2, so get yourself an architect accredited for those restorations to make you life one hell of a lot easier!!! while it is a great idea to install double or triple glazing on the windows it isn't always feasible, so to safe a fortune on heating bills insulate your drapes with blackout, there is a thick one, easy to sew with and it gives 98% light blocking, comes in several colors and reduces heat loss enormously....now did they mention the must to change the heating system??? The law is now in effect that the heating can no longer be oil/diesel and must be next to 0.00 emissions....now you can't install a windmill because of the abbey, so there are several heat exchange systems and bore holes for the existing radiators!!!

    • @LetsBuyAChateau
      @LetsBuyAChateau  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh my gosh, I know there is so much to consider! Honestly a lot of updates have been done... The man who has lived in it for the last 20 years is a builder. Maybe that helped? He already installed double glazing everywhere! It's a super efficient house. I'm super impressed and so grateful!
      As far as the exterior, yeah it's just the shutters that are in horrible shape and then a gate that's nearly rusted through. You would think if they want the Abbey to be respected, they'll let me fix the things that look like Garbage! We shall see 🙂

      Hi April, sorry for my rusty english, what could look weird in France is the amount of papers you should at first fullfill to get things right, but don't forget that administration peoples understand the difficulties and adaptd to the context, then after its over, its a custom to master at first, then peoples into those villages are very curious and open to new comers, living rythm is different and could look "immuable" (don't know how to translate this) anyway as Musset said about living with passion "“Qu’importe de quoi parlent les lèvres, lorsqu’on écoute les coeurs se répondre.”'" don't be affraid if you French isn't as good as you hoped for, time is needed there
