- Engine Department
The department s responsible for the operation, care, and maintenance of the ship's machinery and electrical devices, such as auxiliaries and main engines.
Chief Engineering- head of the engine department who does not stand a watch but is responsible for the functioning of all the machinery of the ship, fuel and water supply, the electricity, refrigeration- everything, which falls within the field of responsibility of the ED.
1st Engr- responsible for the maintenance of the main engine, aux and deck machinery. At sea he stands four hours engine room watch 4 am/pm to 8 am/pm.
2nd Engr- is in charge of the maintenance of the refrigeration plants and boilers. He keeps the midnight watch and the afternoon watch (12 am/pm to 4 am/pm)
3rd Engr- in charge of the aux and generators, fuel, fresh and saltwater pumps. bilge pumps, the compressors, and the ventilators. At sea, he stands the 8 am/pm - 12 nn/mid.
Oilers- responsible for the lubrication of the ship's machinery and monitoring the parameters of machinery in E/R.
Wiper- Performs common labor as cleaning and painting of the engine rooms.
Cadet- Apprentice Engineer/ Officer.
Machinist/ Fitter- assist the 1st Engr. and in charge of machining tools. He undertakes the task of lubricating or machining repair spare parts. He acts as the foreman of the firemen.
The Deck department is in charge of the vessel navigation, watch keeping, maintaining the ship’s hull, cargo, gear, and accommodation, taking care of the ship’s life saving and firefighting appliances.
The supreme authority on board a merchant's vessel is the Master.
first deck officer and the head of the deck department after the Master is the Chief Officer or Chief Mate. He is in charge of the vessel navigation, watches duties, charging, and discharging operations. The Chief Officer also directs all the other officers on deck, creates and posts watch assignments, and implements the Master’s orders in order to maintain safe operations and maintenance of the vessel.
Second Officer or Second Mate is the ship’s navigator, focusing on creating the ship’s passage plans and keeping charts and publications up to date.
The Third Officer or Third Mate is usually the Ship’s Safety Officer, responsible for ensuring the good functioning of the fire-fighting equipment and life-saving appliances.
The AB is part of the deck crew and has duties such as: taking watches, steering the vessel, assisting the Officer on watch, mooring and unmooring the vessel, deck maintenance, and cleaning.
OS is the crew member whose main duty is to maintain the cleanliness of the whole ship and serves as an assistant for the AB.

Parang same din tayo lods nung nag enroll ako Marine Engineering din tinake ko kasi parang mas challenging yung word na "Engineering" without knowing first what are the actual work of a marine engineer di ako nag research di ko nga alam na may BSMT at BSMarE nag pagpipilian, pero 1st year palang at nag enjoy nmn ako kasi face to face pa nun at daming learnings, plan ko na mag shift to BSMT kasi parang dun mas mag poprogress yung skills ko. STEM. Depende sa company mo yung pag taas ng rank mo and sa ability mo.

Hi sir Ems, watching from Palawan po. Aspiring seaman po ako first year college BS Marine Transpo po tinake ko. Scholar po ako katulad niyo. Gusto ko po kasi talaga maging seaman pangarap ko talaga sya since elementary akala ko non same lang sila ng nasa engine. Pangarap ko din talaga maging kapitan eh yan bukang bibig ko dati pa kaya kahit maraming nagsasabi na mahirap na makasampa at maraming jobless na BSMT grads pinursue ko parin siya. I believe na pag gusto mo at masaya makukuha at makukuha mo yun. Nakakalungkot sir minsan nagdodoubt nako sa sarili ko kasi sa mga naririnig ko plus panibagong pagsubok pa tong pandemic sobrang hirap talaga. But still I'm trying my best praying na kayanin ko to. Can you give me tips and motivational words sir? Salamat po kung mapapansin niyo to Godbless❤️
Ituloy mo lang yan dahil yung pandemic for sure pag graduate mo wala na sya kaya it wont affect you unless magkaroon ulit. Regarding naman sa sampahan, in reality sobrang hirap talaga ng sampahan lalo na pag grumaduate ka tapos wala ka pang company. Ito lagi ko sinasabi sa ibang students. Kung gusto mong di mahirapan makasampa after mo grumaduate, make sure na bago ka grumaduate may company ka na. Pag may nag pa exam sa school na company igrab mo agad and do whatever it takes to be part of that company. Pero kung grumaduate ka ng wala pang company mahihirapan ka tlaga makasakay internationally.

Actually may backer po ako pero sobrang halaga ng tips niyo mukhang mahirap din talaga makasampa kahit may backer nakampante na kasi ako eh porke may backer buti nalang nasabi niyo. Btw upcoming college narin po ako, GAS student and biglaan itong MT at ME sa akin, wala pa po akong alam sa mga bagay bagay sa barko pero napagdesisyonan po kong mag MT dahil gusto ko rin makapagbarko talaga since I was 10yrs old... May ilan lang po akong katanungan:
*Sa 3 years of academic, may proper haircut po ba?
*Ano ano po yung mga major subs kadalasan sa MT or ME?
*Ilang buwan po ba ang kontranta ng isang MT or ME sa barko? At nakadipende po ba yun sa company o sa kadete??

Kung gusto mo mas basic na trabaho at mas magaan. Dun ka sa marine transportation. Pero kung gusto nyo skilled job sa barko. Dun kayo sa marine engineering.
