Jay was more of a father to Manny than Javier was. Glad he got a do-over with Joe and Manny, and even became a better father to Claire and Mitchell over time
I think this is because Jay is always a good dad. Claire was just a little high-maintenance, Mitchell was a little hard for him to accept, and Manny took some time before Jay can see him as a son. The one episode that makes me think Jay has always been a good one is when he revealed that he stayed in marriage with his ex-wife just because he wanted his kids to grow up with both parents.
Jay is definitely a dad who never knew how to be a dad. But he kept trying. And while he got a lot wrong, he learned from it so he could get some things right when it mattered
And he kept trying even when his kids had their own familes and Mitch and Claire knew he was always trying I think that's why they stayed close all the years
even in the earlier days of fatherhood, he was particularly absent but it was bc he wanted to work hard to give his children great lives and live comfortably. it’s pretty obvious when they grew up, didn’t they? dede kept giving him crap during their marriage and his father also couldn’t be an ideal father to him. generational upbringing is pretty hard to shrug off and i agree that he really did keep trying despite being grumpy abt it
My dad always told me “there’s no right way to raise kids, but plenty of wrong ones. All you have to do is give them good values and a code of honor, trust they’ll grow with them.” I hope I’m the man my dad wanted me to be
@@castbet9183 That's still not enough. You also have to provide for them, try and give them the best opportunities and most importantly LOVE and listen to them.
Jay preserving Manny's impression of his father is so important. Because someday he'll know how terrible his dad was, and he'll thank Jay for letting him believe as a kid that his dad cared.
When Manny told Jay that his time with him was what father-son time really felt like, I realized Manny was grown, and the connection those two had made Manny who he was, not Javier
@@KingSkeletor its because Manny was a kid back then buddy, knowing that your father does not care for you will break the kid emotionally and Jay here was actually being a *DAD* to Manny by not telling his father couldn't even spare a sigle day for him...
That will always be my favorite moment. I loved how that he seemed uninterested at the wedding, but the whole time he was helping to book a venue for the wedding at his Country Club. Since the wedding kept on changing locations because of the fire and other issues, he knew his son was worth a beautiful wedding and not in Mitch and Cam's living room.
Lol. I feel like there is a back story where Jay told him something like, "If you weren't going to be the father of my first grandchild, I would strangle you for knocking up my daughter while she was in college." or something to that effect where Jay was clearly upset that his son in law knocked his daughter up but at the same time wanted to respect him for doing the right thing and marrying her.
He’s literally an ideal patriarch of the family. That’s why everyone loves him. Sure, his pockets are big but his heart is also equally big. That’s how a grandpa and papa should be. Ed plays the role so well. Hard and grumpy on the outside, soft and loving on the inside.
He's not that wholesome sometimes, especially when dealing about love and woman with that kind of arrogance. But at least he's not that jerk most of the times
it was heartbreaking that her mom couldn’t be there. in all ways, both gloria and jay stood up as better parents to their step kids when their biological parents couldn’t. gloria isn’t even like her generation because she lived a pretty rough life and was an older sister in a less than ideal household which made her more emotionally and overall mature than the pritchett sibling

My step-dad is 10x the man my biological one was. Step-dad was there for my 16th b-day, getting my driver's license, graduation. I can't thank my step dad enough for not being a replacement, but rather simply a humble man who genuinely cares for his family, step or not.

Jay probably has one of the best character arcs in the history of television :') He transformed from a homophobic, mean grump to a kind, caring father and loving husband
One thing I love about this show is that even though it truly portrays the modern family dynamics of the upper middle class--including the miscues and faux pas of a conservative old man struggling to adapt to the new America--there is never a doubt that Jay is the loving, moral, dedicated, wise patriarch whose sacrifices and big heart has laid a foundation for the whole extended family to live a comfortable, stable life.
Exactly: I can imagine he wasn't sure about being a father again when he met Gloria especially since it is clear Javier hasn't been much of one but clearly he stepped up to be the father his step son needed.
When Claire and Michelle were kids , jay was also young so off course he wasn’t a perfect dad but damn he learned and become so much better thn anyone of them
Being a dad is an incredibly hard job especially if his role model wasn't amazing what really makes him a great dad is his ability to learn from his mistakes and become better
Well, Jay couldn't be around Claire and Mitchell often, but he took care of them in the best way possible. Back then, he didn't have the money he has now. In the last season, there was an explanation why he shorten the family trip. I think he is a great dad. He isn't perfect, but he became the person Mitchell and Claire can go to when they need help or support.

The clip when Jay breaks down after his dad died. As a character arc, showed he had tried to be like his dad to Claire and Mitchell, and it was the wrong way. They way he is with Joe and many is the best version of himself.
Jay was always my favourite character. I always appreciated what a good dad he was not only to Manny, but to Phil as well. Phil looked up to him a lot and although they never had the smoothest relationship, Phil managed to always learn something new from him, and vice-versa with Jay. On top of all this, he had the funniest lines and attitude. His delivery was always on point and always made me laugh.
That moment when Jay got a limo and kept Manny's father image in his eyes was seriously top notch parenting. And top notch writing. Always gets me. No matter how many times I watch this one.
Jay accepting Manny as his son made me actually cry. My dad remarried and his wife is not my biggest fan. I always wished we were like the Modern Family, and were all on the same boat, spending holidays and celebrations together.
When Jay made up a story for Manny's Dad, that moment I felt there was never a better dad there could be, ever other than Jay in tv show history, he was truly an amazing dad of his generation.
Jay reminds me of my step-dad (which I consider my real dad than my biological dad). He and my mom got married when I was 8. He was 54 and my mom was 36 that time. At that age, men would have kids around 20 yrs old so he didn't know how to deal with kids our age considering the generation differences between me and our step-sister. When I was younger, I always thought that he was an asshole because of his ways, and sometimes hurtful comments. But now that I am in my twenties, I really am thankful that he was like that with me and my sister. I appreciate him because he was always there for us, unlike our biological dad. He treated us like his own and he never made us feel that we were his step-kids. I love him so much and I am grateful that I have a dad like him (and like Jay!)
It really is. For things working out well, his kids and wife love him, he is the owner of a successful business, Al Bundy 2nd chance at life after moving out of Chicago .
I would like to believe that Jay's personality is closer to the real Ed O'Neill than Al...given what I've read and seen on video about his relationship with Christina Applegate
I had a lot of those "manny waiting for his father and the guy never showed up" moments. The difference is, I was the one who went to my father, and he never told me and my mother he didn't go to work those days.
This is one of the best and wholesome compilations and also one of the best videos i have seen. The abe lincoln one also could have been added. Thank you for this
Jay taking Manny to Disney world is the best scene and it’s so early in the show. It really set the stage for what the show was about for me. - Jay could have taken that opportunity to do what so many broken families so , try to make the kid play favorites say “your dad doesn’t want you but I do” he keeps Manny’s bad dad in good light as he should even though that’s very hard to do
I had stopped watching TV years ago, filling up my time with work and home projects, so these clips are all new to me. What a terrific series on so many levels. And the acting - in around 3 minutes I'm crying. Great writers, great creativity, great topics, great show.
There were some really nice moments in this show. It lost its way after the kids got older and they didn't know what to do with them but still great show.
ACTUALLY HE WAS A GOD DAD who made mistakes like evey human I hate when michell and clair said mean things about him like they’re the best parents in the world they also made mistakes
Kids always know who´s there for them. Jay used to get jealous when Manny used to think that Javier was an incredible dad for showing up to do the fun stuff but as he grew up he realized who was there for him. That moment they had in the graduation episode felt so wholesome. Finally, Manny recognizes him as his dad.

Being a step mom myself the graduation scene always gets me, because you know you didn't birth them, you know at any minute you can hear those words you're not my real mom, but I pray one day he can see me than more than a step mom, I just hope he'll see everything I've sacrificed for his happiness.
Jay was always a good dad, some times his focus might have been a bit off, but he worked hard to provide for his kids and when he retired he gave them the moral support they needed.
Jay is a real men's man: Strong enough to be weak, tall enough to be above refusing to say sorry, smart enough to know when he is wrong, tough enough to be soft, wise enough to keep learning
I really think they did Jay well. He is older and raised conservative but his love for his family and friends opens.him up slowly. No one changes they mind overnight and 100%. it happens gradually
Jay would say to me men don't cry, but I'm in tears, how heartwarming it is. I wish I'd have a dad like Jay Pritchett. My Mother raised me all by herself and she is my super hero. But I wished my dad wouldn't left her alone with me. MODERN FAMILY is a Life-Lesson and I miss that show so much... 🥺
MISSED the most important moment: When Claire & Mitch figure out how Jay was facing financial issues & hence had to cut off their vacation to work as a waiter to pay family bills. Jay named his career changing closet collection as MADDOX- after Mitch’s favourite music album
In all the chaos that goes around in this modern family, Jay is the voice of reason. And while being the voice of reason is great, it’s not always soft hearted. But moments like these make Jay the best father out of all the fathers in the family.
I'm about halfway through the show, and I find Jay the most emotionally compelling. His character really plays to the premise of the show. He's an old guy resigned to his ways, but having a gay son and younger wife forces him to actually change in a way most guys like him never have to, and try to do better his second time around as a dad.
I love when he talks to Manny about Disney Land because he lied for Manny's sake. Manny will see in time that his dad is a crap bag, but that's not today. Today Manny needs to feel like he's loved and appreciated and that's exactly what Jay does.
He spent so many years trying to convince everyone he was tough and didn’t care. If they only knew that wasn’t who he was, it was just what he wanted them to see. No one would believe he had the heart of gold he did if he started out that way.
Jay was more of a father to Manny than Javier was. Glad he got a do-over with Joe and Manny, and even became a better father to Claire and Mitchell over time

Being a step mom myself the graduation scene always gets me, because you know you didn't birth them, you know at any minute you can hear those words you're not my real mom, but I pray one day he can see me than more than a step mom, I just hope he'll see everything I've sacrificed for his happiness.
My mom raised my older sisters from my dads first marriage. Every situation is different but they came around.
Every time he says, "I thought you and I will take a little walk" I cry. Everytime
He’s an example of that people can truly change it’s pretty optimistic; yet is possible and heartwarming
Jay was always a good dad, some times his focus might have been a bit off, but he worked hard to provide for his kids and when he retired he gave them the moral support they needed.
Claire's speech during Mitchell's walk down the aisle is so moving and heart warming!
That 2 last scene Jay and Manny and Jay walking down the aisle with Mitch is the most heartfelt moments of this series
Yea he’s a prince
My favorite line is right after that “every kid should think their dad is Superman”
@@ryankeefe6222 i remember
Jay: “My friend, Dylan will never fulfill his destiny nor you yours until you let go of the illusion of control”
I’m amazed by the power the guy from Married With Children has to make me cry in a role where he shows his family how much he cares.
The wedding scene makes me bawl EVERYTIME
Look, Jay may not have always been the best Dad, but he was always a good Dad. And that’s all we can really ask for.
I cried when jay spoke about manny to mitchell. I can relate to that a lot.
Walking Mitchell and Cameron down the aisle nearly made me cry, proud parents, happy kids
I was blessed with an amazing father and I'd like to think his wisdom helped me raise 4 children. Thank you Pop
The sweet moment, followed by making me drink, that reminds me of my grandpa...
That’s why Jay is the best character in the show on my opinion💙
MISSED the most important moment:
When Claire & Mitch figure out how Jay was facing financial issues & hence had to cut off their vacation to work as a waiter to pay family bills.
He's an old guy resigned to his ways, but having a gay son and younger wife forces him to actually change in a way most guys like him never have to, and try to do better his second time around as a dad.
this is the best video on the internet .
His character development means the world to me
This series is just full of sweetness
NGL, I cried when he walked Mitchel down the aisle!
1:32 bless him. Hes made al bundy pale in comparison, dear, Ed o neil.
Modern family is indeed a classic sitcom period
