I didn't know Mirage is voiced by Frank Welker (voices Fred, Dr. Claw and Megatron) and Ratchet is voiced by the late Don Messick (OG Scooby Doo voice actor).
Rachet was Scooby-Doo? That's 3 of the gang! Were Daphne & Velma's voice actors in this for side characters? Where's the Transformers-Scooby-Doo Collaboration for the Mystery Machine then!?!
It was this episode that solidified Mirage as my favorite of the OG group. Not only did he bring down the Decepticon ship single-handedly but he pulled off this double agent stuff too.
And thus began Mirage’s typecasting. One episode, an Autobot accuses you of being a traitor, next thing ya know, every other TF show and comic ends up having you either be a spy or a double agent.

Ironic: if Bombshell HADN'T injected Mirage with a Cerebro Shell, thereby giving the Autobots physical proof that he was still on their side, Cliffjumper STILL would have thought he was a traitor...or at the very least, his allegiance would have always remained in question. Instead - unlike in other TF media - the entire matter was put to rest for the duration of the series. Thanks, Bombshell. You make one heck of an Autobot!
This was a brilliant episode and a real nice change of pace, unlike the Decepticons who were always arguing and never fully on the same page, the Autobots always came across as a close knit family, so it made things very interesting to see one of their own being accused of possibly switching sides and under suspicion for being a traitor. It would have been cool if they actually made it into a two part episode because of how good the storytelling was. I'm glad they went with Mirage as the possible traitor as he's not someone you would have expected and him having beef with Cliffjumper made this even better. I loved it

i honestly feel bad for mirage, not only did cliffjumper accuse him of lying and being a traitor, but he also got enslaved by the insecticons. his little prank was pretty funny though lol, id say hes a master with his invisibility device also, i still love cliffjumper and im not calling him stupid or anything. i think he took mirages words the wrong way since the decepticon station wasnt there when he (mirage) was scouting the area, and proceeded to think that mir was lying. (for me its impossible to hate any character, even a decepticon) edit: 21:43 one of the cutest scenes in the whole franchise for sure, god damn i love cliffjumper lol
Mirage is not a traitor, he's acted on his own by orchestrating a Decepticon civil war so that the Autobots won't sustain heavy casualties. his F1 race car alt mode was built for race track, not for off road use seen in this episode, his underbelly of the vehicle sit so low may cause serious damage scraping against jagged rocks or balancing on top of it! Also, it's never been designed to drive onto an upward slope!
A great episode, IMHO, though the main conflict could easily have been avoided if Mirage had just told Prime what he was up to (or at least that he was up to SOMETHING).
This is what's referred to as an "idiot plot". Easy solution if everyone weren't dumb. Which I kind of love because it's interesting to see how those kind of folks handle things their own way.
Prime would never have let him since ratchet put him on rest and if the autobots follow the same chain of commands as in the military. When it cones to medical decisions on the battlefield. The medic (Ratchet) has higher authority. Meaning that mirage would not have made it out of the base as Prime would have someone watching him.
"If I can't have it, no one will!" Megatron does this stunt more than once. It's prick-ish, it's evil, and it's probably done partly to save his own pride. But there may also be a bit of self-preservation at play as well. You're likely to win more fights in the future if your enemies have less themselves to become more powerful with.
A true rare gem of animation is when Starscream question Megatrons courage while testing the electrocells. The animation when the side-angle of the conversation takes place, their lips are perfectly synced with the language spoken, including the lip movements are absolutely SPOT ON. It’s just that type of detail that made the cartoon a phenomenon
Prime “They don’t belong to you.” Megaton “I possess them therefore I own them.” Megaton has a point after there’s an old saying that possession is nine tenths off the law.🤣

I rememeber in 1984 after I watched this episode, Mirage became my favourite Autobot. I mean, are you kidding? Shoulder missile launcher, a spy, invisibility power, sleek body and good in combat, AND A F1 car mode!!! The other bot I liked was Hound - missile, charming personality, handsome head looks like nicely combed hair, hologram magic, and a JEEP! The 2 missile and illusionist brothers of the autobot team.
