@twink06 Sonication has the capacity to break intermolecular interactions - it can aid in disrupting cell membranes allowing release of cytoplasmic constituents... vortexing is just mixing, and in cases where you want to avoid frothing of a sample, sonication has obvious benefits over vortexing as it doesn't introduce air into the sample; in fact, it also aids in removing gasses from aqueous samples.
