Slot It Slot Cars Reviews - Ford GT 40 - FAILED

  • Let me first say, I am new to the hobby of Slot Cars. I will clear up any confusion immediately, the Slot It Ford GT40 is amazing! This review went sideways pretty quick due to my lack of knowledge when it comes to slot cars, my inability to drive a slot car and this was my first experience with a car that was not a Carrera car.
I was excited to see this car in stock from the great folks at Slot Car Corner! It quickly arrived and I quickly got frustrated because it was difficult to chip for my Carrera Digital Track. I blame myself for my lack of experience. Once chipped, I proceeded to rough up the car pretty bad. I could not drive it. I go into great detail about my struggles and frustration.
This is very much a failed review! Not in terms of the car, but the driver.

Slot it cars are the shit !!!! .... just have to learn tuning tips .... once you know how to tune and set them up ... you'll fall in love ... they are some of my best running cars ...
Can be tough for the beginners .. these cars are designed for the more serious hobbyist .. which I know you're working on becoming .. just takes some time and patience .. you'll learn my friend .. don't be afraid to ask questions .. more than one way to skin a cat .. always remember that .. 😊😊

I get it they are a performance slot car,but dang. 1 crash and pieces shatter. The bottom drags way too much just going around a track........both lead wires broke right away......no doubt they are really fast cars. The power on my Slot it Lola hits like a light switch so yeah some tuning is needed. Very lively cars. Probably better on a big track with long straights.

Marty, good to see a new channel.
I bought 2 Slot.It LMP"s. On both cars the guides broke off within 50 laps. I run no magnets and added 1 Slot.it weight in each car. Also used a different Slot.it tire. Changed the guides to Slotinvasion. That took some mods. Alot of work. Also loosen the pod and body then oil it. After all the mods the cars run fast.
I like NSR and Revo Slot.

Sorry to hear about your struggles. You shouldn't be too hard on yourself for the damage, after all these things should be meant for racing hard and take a little beating, otherwise they'd only be model cars. I'm also expecting my first Slot.it car (the upcoming Ferrari 512M) to run on my Carrera digital, so I'm watching closely Lol. You should really think about putting up some safety walls, although they are pretty difficult to find. I guess you can always make your own, but in my opinion the best ones out there are PMTR4001 safety walls with catch fences. It took me many months to finally acquire them (GTSlotcars gets a bunch in from time to time but they sell out very quickly, and CarreraSlots is working on getting them in), and until then I had simply cut five inch wide, long strips of cardboard and taped that up along all the outer borders of the track. Thanks for the videos, wishing you all the best! Dennis

Marty, I too have bought a few brand new cars and straight out the box they did not perform well, they were not the brand you tested, anyways I have a few suggestions
1 sit the car on track and check the guide blade depth, make sure the guide depth is not hindered by the front tyres
The tyres should just clear the track when fully seated on the rails, this gives you maximum from grip and will eliminate a lot of the understeer
    2. Deglaze the rear tyres for more grip
I do this by wetting the corner of a cloth with a few squirts of CARB CLEANER and rub each tyre, you will be amazed at the amount of "rubber" that comes off, its not destroying the tyre but merely taking the shine off them ........ this will help a lot with overseer
I have found that these beautiful cars mostly with cockpit features are much heavier, mostly TOP HEAVY, causeing them to topple on corners, for that you need to adjust drive style till you get the hang of it
Remember in 1 and 2 above most manufacturers do not use the grippiest tyres on rear and zero grip on front the tyres come straight out the moulds and still have the "flow and release" agents on the surfaces, they don't pay attention to this, the stuff helps preserve the tyres while in stock
I have in all my cases found the front tyres to be too large in diameter causeing the guide blade to NOT be used to full affect
Once you have done above I assure you, you will be satisfied,
Then comes the truing of tyres and balancing/adjusting the magnets to obtain best times
You may even change the rears to max grip type????
Sorry to see you so dissapointed in your 19 gt40,

I think you’re possibly too used to double magnet, heavier Carrera cars. Good idea to throttle it back to ~30% and get used to the different style.
I personally run my D132 classic GT cars at 20-30% power and even less brakes using polyurethane rear tyres and no magnets at all. Much more realistic and way easier on the cars. It’s worth a try…
I know it’s expensive, but I’d also suggest borders on your track and some sort of buffers against what looks to be your basement wall to save the cars.
Carrera Evo/D132 cars are really tough and take a beating versus light weight racing versions like Slot.it and NSR etc.
    Thanks and all the best

I thought it was funny that you didn’t notice the drivers names there on the cars base. Tune the car, I have 3 so far two are set up with chassis tuning, magnets and are quite quick at my local track. A basic tune out of the box is to true the tires. Keep them clean with a lint roller. Use clear nail polish on the front tires so they don’t grip the track. Slot.it cars are much faster then Carerra cars. I have 4 of those and I only like 2 of them. Tuning for no magnet is a little tricky in most cars. Revo cars are pretty good out of the box but only their tires are tunable, thus making them good spec cars. I get that you want to take advantage of your digital track, but mixing slot.it and Carerra cars isn’t going to work out to well. It’s like racing sports cars against family sedans.

Yes Mike.. I was in record mode.. and sometimes you don't see the forest for the trees in that moment 🤦🏻‍♂ LOL. I agree with you about the difference between Slot It and Carrera. I am finding that even after tuning, I struggle to drive my Slot.it and my Carrera cars are pretty locked into the track. The Slot.it..It struggles with traction. I have to relearn every time I put it on the track. It is like it changes from day to day. As we develop classes, in brand is the way to go. Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it.

slot.it cars are not toy cars. First off, they do not come with a magnet as strong as the carrera cars so that is why it looks like it has less grip.
The motor as you have found out is much more powerful than a stock carrera one.
Also, the GT 40 is a car that does not have much space for chipping. It can be done but it is not an easy tasks especially for one starting into the hobby.
Not clear what chip you are using, but there are some third-parties ones that are small enough to fit.
Think also about changing the interior for a lexan one with might help with the chip clearance.

@@danosjackpot I had to cut parts out of the inside of car to get a chip to fit in a slot it car,I cut the driver's legs off on one....its still tight.

Dano, I used a Carrera Chip until I got the SlotTechnik chip in the mail. I still did not have room for the chip without taking out the interior. I didn't want to cut the interior, so I just removed it. The chip works great and is easy to install.. just not a lot of room.

I originally used the stock Carrera but you are better off using the FT Slottechnic! It is smaller and easier to install.
